I've been playing some Tomb Raider and it abosolutely annoys me that once again the wolves are out on a search and destroy mission for Lara Croft. What is gaming's obsession with using murderous wolves as the go to bad guy? Can't we use real animals that kill people, like Hippos?

Cleaned up the thread somewhat as I saw many potential forks in the road that all led to bridges under construction.

You mean Schumacher didn't close this thread ?

No, I did not. In fact, I even told someone that the post that they made towards you was inappropriate. Though I'd hate to think you were making public comments about moderation.

(In case it isn't clear for everyone, I'd really rather not deal with it. Thanks)

Unfortunately it has nothing to do with that. Developers just hate wolves, just look at games that are set in "the real world".

I don't know if it's so much a hatred. On some level it's a trope, so yeah it probably gets over used.

Wolves are seen as pack predators (rightly or wrongly), and can also be seen as a suitable foe for an adventuring party (as opposed to say, the killer snapping turtles). On the one hand, it may be possible for them to be someone respected as powerful and cunning animals.

Bears also come up a lot, for a lot of the same reasons I think.

Yes.  Please do not make me regret referencing it! ;)

Yes, but this isn't a pre-industrialized society. This is a video game that uses wolves like they're some kind of monster.

Or simply a wilderness creature that can be hostile and dangerous, and (perhaps uncreatively) a relatively common thing in RPGs, for better or worse.

Spiders and Bears are also used (although the spiders are fantastical)

Judging from the look of the previews, you're looking at the wrong game for that.

To be fair, it's just a stated preference. It doesn't mean that more fantastic monsters isn't still enjoyable.

I am a minor arachnophobe myself (used to be much worse) so I can empathize :P

I should take a picture of my foot for you. I got bitten by a (scary
Australian) spider about a month ago and I still have scarring over
about 10cms.

No you should not.

I always miss the consequences of spider bites in RPGs. Like, you just drink the antipoison potion. Where's the slow slide into blood poisoning? I wanted Fenris to drink all those bottles of wine and show me the spider bite he got fighting my battles.

Despite cries of realism from many, it often just isn't fun ;)
