Very rarely. They mostly avoid people.

Until they become acclimated to them.

and that's how we ended up with this!

i thought there was a thing in the codex in origins that said the wolves were more aggressive because of the blight? or something i dunno

that being said i hope we have less aggressive wolves in inquisition because i am a big dork for wolves and slaughtering them endlessly makes me a little sad. maybe just wolves that run away from you unless you get too close to their den?

wolf attacks do happen, but it's usually when they're either sick or someone's wandering far too close to their den and they're defending their home and pups.

You know, it would be pretty neat if the animals in the game had a "threat level" or something. Say, when you're lower level, you're seen as easier prey and have to defend yourself from them... but the higher level you get, the less chance an animal predator will risk its own life to try and eat you.

Some variation of that exists a bit in Fallout New Vegas, where once I reached a high enough level, certain low-level predators (Golden Geckos and coyotes instantly spring to mind) didn't think I was worth the risk of attacking anymore. First noticed it when I sniped a coyote mother from a distance, thinking she'd attack me like all the other coyotes beforehand had... and then I reached her den and her mate and none of the other pups wanted to try and take me on, despite the fact I'd just murdered their mother/mate (this was also BEFORE I'd taken the "Animal Friend" perk). I honestly felt awful about that because, since I'd been attacked before at a lower level, I thought I was getting the drop on them. Turns out, I was no longer a threat and had just needlessly killed the den mother.

I actually reloaded the save because of that. Soft, bleeding heart, I know.

ahhh i'm the same way though, can't stand to kill those lil coyotes in new vegas, they're just so cute and they generally don't bug you unless you get close to their den.

i'd love to see that sort of thing in inquisition. hell even with human enemies, as the way bandits love to attack heavily armed high level protagonists with rudamentary weapons and armor is sort of irritating in its own right although i figure they usually leave that in for the sake of having more combat later into the game as opposed to everyone running away from you past a certain level. so maybe not for humans after all, but for cute woofs, definitely.

:) I believe it was a (relatively venomous) white tailed spider. It got infected, then I had an allergic reaction to the infection so I had purplish bruising over about 20cms of my ankle. It was awesome. (And a little scary.)

I always miss the consequences of spider bites in RPGs. Like, you just drink the antipoison potion. Where's the slow slide into blood poisoning? I wanted Fenris to drink all those bottles of wine and show me the spider bite he got fighting my battles.

Edit: Oh. Also. I have no idea if this is a myth, but several times when I've had to kill a huntsman spider over the years, another one turns up soon after, more aggressive. (I think the myth goes that its the spider's mate.) RPGs totally need to do that. (You know, since we're talking animal behaviour. :P)

Despite cries of realism from many, it often just isn't fun ;)

It's not a mate.

When a male huntsman spider senses the pheromones of a female, it vibrates, creating a noise that attracts a mate. This is similar to what crickets do. Female spiders pick up the vibration and come looking for the male if they're interested.

What you're probably doing is killing female spiders on their way to the same booty call.

Oh my God, that corgi is so cute!!!!! Ahem, so about those wolves - they were definitely annoying in Tomb Raider. I recall cursing them in one cave because they kept nomming on me while I was trying to run away.

Hmm, now that I think about it, they should just replace all wolves with corgis - instead of attacking us, they'll beg us for belly rubs and treats.

Ouch. White tails are notoriously aggressive. Whenever I find one in the house I capture it as quick as I can for a ride on the porcelain express.

Stop killing all the innocent bandits, they are just trying to feed their families!! Let them rob your corpses so that their kids can eat.. when you kill a bandit you're taking away the sole provider for a family somewhere! Boohoo!

I'm not sure I've ever caught and identified one before. Redbacks and hunstmen, yes. Frequently.

I think RPGs need that. Like, not just the spiders, but people telling stories about spiders, exchanging war stories and myths about mating. Then they're even scarier.

Did you know earthbound, a 1994 snes game, had that. Of course it doesn't actually make sense since animals can't see your level bar.

Did not know that; pretty cool!

Also, in regards to animals sensing level... well, yeah, obviously they can't see your experience bar. LOL But it could be easier to understand by, say, you sporting better equipment, better armor/weapons than you had at lower level, maybe an overall aura of confidence being exuded. Intangibles, really.

There was an old western called the scalphunters for those who don't like skinning wolves and selling pelts.
There's a poster by the name of rabies.
Sure wolves don't normally attack humans, despite Liam Neelsen's movie The Grey , unless they're starving or have some disease like rabies .
There are a few videos , probably on youtube now of people being attacked by rabid animals such as bobcats , coyotes , and foxes.
Not aware of any with wolves though.
The guy with the spider bite in his foot should post the pic anyway.
Give the developers some ideas for DAI's injuries.

Is that because of something specific to the nature of wolves that would translate between real and fictional settings, or because of relative scarcity and seperation from human environments?

Wolves attacking a group of people is practically unheard of here in Sweden (though a woman in the staff got killed 1-2 years ago when she went alone into the wolf pen in an open air zoo). Otherwise, it hardly ever happens.
Blight infected animals can explain aggressive behaviour in DA, which is why I prefer that over normal beasts.

Vending machines are responsible, on average, for more deaths per year than sharks.

This doesn't mean vending machines are especially aggressive, just that both statistics are missing information relevant to individual instances.

I don't like fights that are just there because we need a fight. Which using wolves generally seem like they're a sign of. They're stock filler enemies, like bandits.

Legitimate reasons to use them do exist, of course. It's quite natural to have them accompanying werewolves, or even vampires. And if you're doing one of those "nature is being driven mad" type stories they fit nicely.
