 Anyone heard much about this?

Supposedly they were contemplating an Awar barbarian coming from the Haven village as one of the origin beginnings.

If true; is much known about what their plans were at the time?  Some kind of left over names in the game coding or some such sort of thing?

Several proposed origins were left on the cutting room floor. There was supposed to be a human commoner, from Redcliffe, I believe. I think they went with this for quite a while (the wardens in the trailers look quite human commoner-ish...) before it was cut.

I also heard that Avvar barbarian was considered, as well as an apostate mage (possibly Dalish?). But I don't think these were ever more than ideas briefly considered in Bioware's initial brainstorming phase. You probably won't find many relics of these ideas in the game itself.

Human Commoner Origin would have taken place on a farm

Yeah, it was originally an origin. It was mean to tie into the Urn of Sacred Ashes but was cut due to lack of resources.

David Gaider...

And, yes, originally there was a "Human Barbarian" origin where you began as one of the Avvars. Your clan was wiped out, with you as the last survivor, and you were able to re-visit your origin when you went to the Urn of Sacred Ashes plot (which was in Avvar territory -- this was prior to Haven's existence, and prior to the involvement of the Andrastian cultists). This was scrapped fairly early on, as we just didn't have the art resources to give the Avvars a different "look" and it didn't feel worthwhile to do them without doing them justice as a different culture
