It's interesting that few games cause controversy due to extreme violence - it's usually nudity and sex that earn "mature" tags. Adults-only actually. It's puritanical but unlikely to change any time soon.

One exception is Manhunt 2, uncensored of course. The executions are brutal in a casual, matter-of-fact style. Nothing flashy, just realistic violence. Even Rockstar felt they crossed a line with that one.

That certainly depends on your country.

I think it is Germany that has or used to have a serious problem with the violence part.

The blood more than the romance scenes.
I hope some of the immature and also likely underage posters here will have difficulty buying it, at least for a while because it's rated M for Mature. Give us a little breather.

Not in Europe. We Europeans have no problems with sex or nudity, but CoD 6 and a number of other shooters were almost banned or heavily censored.

Congratulations, you are now in-charge of the Inquisition.

Your character spends all day sitting behind a desk reading reports from Cassandra. An entire questline is dedicated to reconciling and approving time cards because Varric rounded his work time up. You have the epic choice of granting or denying Cullen's request for vacation time.

As for romances, those will be very realistic, your PC goes home to a cookie-cutter mansion (underwater on its mortgage of course) in Val Royeux where they are trapped in a loveless marriage with a woman whose beauty is only a fading memory. If no one is feeling "tired" or "has a headache" you might get a few minutes of passionless humping.

Ah, yes. I can see all the threads about getting crashed by angry Cullen fangirls shoud any users mention that they deined Cullen's vacation request, and afterwards, troll threads about denying Cullen his vacation request will appear.

I was hoping for an introspective analysis to what it means to have genuine friendship in the face of adversity while overcoming betrayal from a loved one.

Or would such a thing not really be "mature?" <_<

Friendship vs ideology/faith how far will you go for either,  hpw does the trauma of conflict both interpersonal and the violent kind affecr people, that kind of thing? That would make an intense story as long as the adversity faced was also compelling

Yes, Germany is quite strict when it comes to violence. Even Doom was banned for about 17 years, no doubt because you could shoot "people" and see red blood. Zombies with green blood is apparently okay, which is laughable.

Australia also has a reputation for banning games, and not just for violence. They have a new age category now (R18) which should improve the situation.

It'll be a grim depressing story, where you unavoidably will have to kill all friends and love ones because of stuff. Lotsa tragedies and art

They have to put T or M on the game in the current industry. If they don't comply with regulations, then they risk litigation.

TW has pointless murder? And more than DA? Pretty much every murder-knife action that I can recall was pointless.

Human: Hey, knife-ears! What're you doing here? Where'd you get weapons?
Elf Warden: (Oh, shoot...there's more of them than me...)
Elf Warden: I was...er...he was...ah, sod it. (Throw Knife.....Critical Hit!)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Genetivi: This discovery must be shared with the world! I'll die trying if I have to!
Elf Warden: (People are going to abuse this to no end...I've gotta stop this fanatic.)
Elf Warden: Then die! (Throw Knife.....Critical Hit!)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dock Guy: Sorry, the information seems to have slipped my mind...
Hawke: (I'm not going to get anything done without aggressive persuasion. More cost effective.)
Hawke: (Draw Knife) Do you really want to die today?

I don't think you really need that much of anything to make a game mature to whomever rates them.
It sometimes seems that violence and swearing is enough.

Let me correct myself: Sometimes it seems that even one woman's nipple is enough.

And you would be right. Sex/nudity will almost certainly be given a mature rating, but that doesn't apply to violence. Most 'teen' games are violent action and killing from start to finish, and loaded with profanity. The moment you show a nipple though, expect a harsh response.

Yeah, stabbing a helpless old scholar in the back because he wants to share his life's work is really justified.... nothing pointless about that. It's not like Wardens are supposed to be politically neutral and it's not really up to you to decide what happens with the Ashes.... Okay, I realize you can argue about this, but still I see a knife at the back of Genitivi's head as rather brutal and pointless.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hawke: *stabs Javaris Tintop*
Companion: *shakes head*
Hawke: he was annoying
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Warden: *stabs templar suffering from lyrium withdrawal while locked up in Howe's cells*
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Warden: *stabs the arrogant noble from the CE origin* This is only an understandable action if you're playing a city elf, otherwise it's plain murder of a guy who happens to be arrogant.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Warden: *stabs prisoner in cage after he tells you about the treasure and the key he has*
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Warden: *stabs wounded soldier in the Korcari Wilds who could be patched up in just a few minutes*
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Warden: *stabs wounded Dalish without visible bitemarks who would survive if you take the effort of bringing him back to camp, just to take his crappy boots and a gem*
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Warden: *kicks Awakening prisoner into the pool of lava after he told you about the treasure*
