Why is Ash fine with Tali but not Garrus and Wrex?

Just did one of those elevator rides with Ash and Tali and Ash expressed the hope that having Tali along would improve humans' attitudes towards the Quarians. And in her conversation on the Normandy she objects to Garrus and Wrex, but says nothing about Tali who is learning all about the technical specifications of the Normandy. Ash, you do know that is not a human under that suit, yes? The chicken toes and three fingers should be a clue.

This is an interesting question.

Ash isn't exactly anti-alien or racist. She is mainly a realist, and loyal to the Alliance.

Garrus is a Turian, working indirectly for the Council at C-Sec. Humanity and the Turians are nominally allies, but they were on opposite sides in the First Contact War.

Wrex is a Krogan, and they don't exactly have the best reputation. On top of that he is a merc, and more loyal to the credits than a flag.

Apparently from later dialogue, Ash seems to think of Tali as a little sister. Perhaps it was her personality in ME1 that made Ash ignore her as a threat to Alliance interests / security. Perhaps it is just that the Quarians were marginalized and weren't controlled by the Council.

I might have agreed with this before, but I just now had a convo with Wrex and I don't see it that way anymore.

I was not going to recruit Wrex this time. (Better than killing him on Virmire but still giving me Wreav later on.) But then I met up with him at C-Sec after having dealt with Fist. After handing over the bounty Wrex made his case for why he should be a part of my crew. I thought his argument was rather compelling so I decided to go ahead and bring him along. (Too bad this means I have to kill him now. :() Wrex made it clear it was not about money, but about what was best for his people and freeing them from what Saren had done to them.

I phrased that poorly. I meant that he is a merc, and they are seen as only interested in credits.

I am not entirely sure Ash spends much time getting to know Wrex or Garrus. That would at least be the presumption.

You do realise that it's possible to not kill Wrex, right? You just need to handle it right. I can't remember whether it was a charm/intimidate response or whether normal dialogue would also work, but there was a way to keep him alive and part of your crew.

The plan for this playthrough has been to have Wreav on Tuchanka all along. At first I was going to do that by simply not recruiting Wrex. But after he made his little speech, this Sheppard was persuaded to bring him along. Which turned into an icky mess on Virmire. Sheppard didn't even have the guts to do it himself, he had Ashley do the deed. Shepard you SOB! Actually, Wrex did call Shepard a b a stard just before Ash laid down the hammer, not once, but 46 times.

Well, it is a very early conversation, so we can assume she doesn't know any of them well enough to make a personal judgement. So I think your explantions for Wrex and Garrus work even if Garrus is a very bad turian and Wrex is a very honorable mercenary. But she can't be all that fond of the Tali by that point. Maybe she just doesn't think of the Migrant fleet as a possible threat? It has a lower population than the Netherlands. And no offense the the Netherlands, but they aren't very threatening.

I think this sums it up pretty well. Turians were once enemies, and Krogan probably work against Alliance interests more than for them. Quarians, to my knowledge, have never had major trouble with the Alliance.

Also, and this is pure random speculation, Tali owes Shepard her life, just like Ashley does. She joins with a sense of honor and owing a debt that maybe Ash can sympathize with. Garrus and Wrex join for more selfish reasons so Ash is less inclined to trust them.
