Why am i terrible at this game?

Fast forward a week. I play silver consistently. I can carry my own weight (usually), but i'm consistently placing in 4th place:(. I've been reading tips, going through the forums, and have been learning alot. Just two days ago i learned how to make biotic and tech explosions. My goal is to be able to play gold with 4 other random people with most characters. i have dreams of waking up one night (i work graves) and thinking, "I feel like playing a *insert race here* tonight!" and then feeling like an asset to the team.
I hate playing bronze because i find it kind of dull<_<. I usually get 4th place again, but that's because we usually have someone who just runs around using the flamer, or the cain trip mine the crap out of the enemy spawn points. Silver feels right in its difficulty and playstyle, but i just don't get credits near as fast as i'd like. Interestingly, unless someone on the team is amazing, i usually die the least out of everybody (both bronze and silver), but then again, 4th place. Granted my accuracy could be better, but it's becoming a very annoying pattern.
Going through the forums i can tell i have a way to go, because i can't solo bronze yet (told you i'm terrible), and there are people here talking about their ability to solo gold.
A quick question: Should i always buy the premium specter packs, or should i get any of the others as well? I've bought a few recruit packs along the way, but only for some more medigels.

If you don't need reviving constantly, you help with objectives, and the team extracts, your doing just fine.
Some players are highly aggressive at playing the game, others aren't.
Thats one of the biggest factors in scoring.

Buy recruit packs and whatever the second packs are, you'll get good equipment and you'll stop wasting 99000 credits to just get some uncommon weapons.

By then, you'll have the TSent+Mattock X. That setup will own Silver and will get you through Gold (hell, I still use it today. You have a low power recharge time, but your gun still packs a quite a bit of a punch.). Now, start buying Spectre Packs. Once you start playing Platinum, THEN, you start buying PSPs.

use loleasy kits at first. then when you get used to playing gold you can use the bad kits. you will also have better weapons and mods
use tgi, aui, juggs, kroguard, fury, geth trooper,
also host. the game is so much easier

Also just be aware it's going to be hard for you to top scoreboards with low level weapons and minimal consumables. Try to pay attention to where the enemies spawn and how yours' and your teammates' positions affect the enemy spawn positions.
Also go here and here and watch the videos if you really want to learn how to pwn. Pretty much everything about how to play this game has already been figured out.

At this point in the cycle you may as well stay in silver, but get used to coming last until you've built up your inventory - gold/plat isn't tuned for people who just started a couple of weeks ago.
And have fun!

Max out your common weapons first. Then max out your uncommons before buying premium spectre packs.
I don't know why people say this, it's terrible advice because except for the Mantis the commons are useless, and so are most of the uncommons. Maxing them is a waste of time. I never use any of them anymore ever.
Basically, if you don't like/aren't good at sniping, then skip worrying about commons completely. They're useless on gold and above. If you do want to snipe, only worry about getting common cards until your Mantis is maxed - it's highly effective on gold with an infiltrator and phasic rounds, particularly against Geth and Cerberus.
Your number one priority right now for buying packs should be to make sure you have enough consumables for each match. Whatever credits you have left after making sure your consumables are good I would spend on Spectre packs or Premium spectre packs, whichever you like.
Gold weapons which are very good and you should get excited about when you unlock them and level them up:
Claymore, Widow, Piranha, Arc Pistol, Acolyte, Raider, Reegar, Collector Sniper Rifle, and the Revenant when used in conjunction with specific builds (AKA TSol, but also Destroyer/GI).

Good point, but unlocking Commons means that you won't see them in Veteran packs (they'd be replaced by level 2 ammo), and if you're a relatively new player, you'd need all of the level 2 ammo you can get.
However, OP should still stick to unlocking the Uncommons. Like I said before: TSent+Mattock X.

Because you're done with them and you won't be pulling them out of more expensive packs and wasting your credits.lightswitch wrote...

First off, dont buy any packs other than recruits and veterans until all your uncommons and commons are maxed out (use the N7 HQ to help you, manifest can be viewed there). Once you get those out of the way, start buying Arsenal, Reserves, Premium Spectre, and Spectre packs to max out your rares.
Also, find players from here to play with you, they can help you out with alot of stuff, and you can watch and see how they play (this is very useful, I learned alot when i got BSNers to help me transition into gold)
Also, let me add that score means nothing at all. It only matters to all the elitists who think theyre better than everyone and get pissed if someone outscores them. So dont worry about it. Same with N7 rank

because helping new players who are struggling is the right thing to do. Not rub your epeen in their face (not aimed towards you crimson)

Agreed. I would also add Falcon, Adas and Geth Plasma Shotgun to that list, they can all be really useful evet at level I.

I mostly agree. However, buying a few veteran and recruit packs every day when you're new to the game is good to help you max your weapon mods. The most important of which are probably the piercing mods for shotguns, snipers, assault riles and pistols (all uncommon).
OT - score isn't a very accurate measure or performance in this game. If you use equipment or consumables when necessary, help with objectives and don't die too often then you should consider yourself a good teammate.
Also OP, if you ever want to try some gold or even need a hand in silver feel free to invite me.
My psn id is the same as here.

The reason people recommend maxing your common and uncommons first is because of the weapon mods which go farther than just about anything else.

Patience. It sounds like you're learning pretty quickly as it is. I'm too scrubby to give you advice though. I've logged a fair number of hours, but still suck. Two things that (I think) help my game:
1. Light intoxication.
2. Play the vanilla kits from the ground up. The Mastery goals are a fun way to encourage you to use an assortment of guns, powers and characters and hopefully learn which ones best fit your play style.
