What sort of defensive play is in the game?

In the previous games there were plenty ways of attacking, but defending wasn't quite as... enjoyable. Defense was mostly based on activated/passive abilities statistics or magic spells. There wasn't a way to dodge out of the way, or to raise your shield or weapon to block or parry. Other combat mechanics like staggering, power attacks and kicks can also be used defensively. Like if someone comes at you with their shield raised you could disengage a safe distance outside of melee range by kicking the shield for one example. Basically, I'd rather defending be more action based than numbers based than it was in origins.

I wonder if you can raise a shield... (regular or magical)

I wonder how the dodging works when using the tactical camera. Sounds tricky.

I would guess that it would be more effective with the third person camera.

I have a hard time seeing the twitch combat mechanics working well with the tactical combat. Not being able to dodge anything might mean we would have to switch between the camera views all the time.

Maybe defending doesn't have to be twitch based, but since dodging, blocking and stuff all all reactive combat moves I'm not sure how. But I think they've already confirmed that your group is going to be doing it's own thing half the time anyway...

I am extremely skeptical of dodge rolls and the like. But I am still in love with Bioware for letting me play my elf, so I'll remain faithful.

Because surely they have earned that faith from their past endeavors.

Mage can teleport out of harm way while warrior can dodge. I'm guessing that rogue may be able to hide themselves.
