I was "speaking" with someone on this forum and they mentioned how different ME2 is over ME1 and boy, it is quite a bit different.

The Equipment screen is gone.
I am on my first mission - Freedom's Progress, and no map
The on-screen radar has to be manually activated

Hmmm, anything else I should know? Oh yeah, where is Liara??????

Thanks -

Liara cannot be a squadmate in this game unless you buy the Lair of the Shadow Broker DLC. She then becomes a squad mate for the length of that DLC. (BTW, LotSB is probably one of the best DLC's in the ME series.) I am not sure I should say anything beyond that since it would be a spoiler. Suffice to say, you do get to meet your old squad mates again, some of whom can join your team.

There really isn't much need for a map. It is usually pretty straight forward where you need to go. If you are having problems, then pushing down on the right joy stick should give you an arrow on the radar of where you need to go.

Powers work very differently. Read the descriptions for what they do. Some powers work on barriers, some on armor, some on shields, some only on unprotected enemies. Some powers work together. For instance, you can Pull an enemy and while he is in the air hit him with Warp or Throw. This will cause an explosion that effects all nearby enemies. So Jacob can use Pull on an enemy and then Miranda can hit that enemy with Warp. Boom.

Telling your squad mates where to go is much improved. I use the power wheel to pause the game and while it is paused I use the dpad to direct them where to take cover. Otherwise they tend to run around the battlefield and get themselves killed.

Your squadmates no longer need an LOS to a target to use a power. As long as Sheppard has an LOS to an enemy he can order the squad mate to use a power on it. If the squad mate that has been ordered to use the power is not in Sheppard's view then power hits instantly. If Sheppard can see the squad mate s/he has ordered to use a power, then that squad mate will first go through a casting animation before the power hits, but the hit is still instantaneous, no travel time.

Cover mechanics are vastly improved, though still not as good as they are in ME3.

You can equip your squad mates with different weapons at the start of a mission as they become available, but the selection is very limited. There are some DLC available (some free) that increase the number of weapons you can chose from. Rather than lots of different weapons, ME2 has a research system to improve the weapons you do have. Your can also buy various modifications for you armor and research improvements.

Thanks Cap and Gown.... very good info on ME2 (might be enough to keep me playing it). My financial backers are already working on a way to get to the Asari homeworld so that me and Liara can be together forever (and not just via a DLC)....LOL

You won't get to the Asari homeworld until ME3.

But you can get to an Asari world in ME2.

Laughing out really loud.... :-) I was actually joking about my real-world financial backers working on a real plan to get to this fictitious Asari world. I had no idea that in the game, you can travel to Asari. I have a rather wry/warped sense of humor.
