Disclaimer: the following review is solely based on my own experience with this soundtrack. You do not have to agree with me, and you are entitled to a different opinion.

So I downloaded the full OST (all 27 tracks) and I must say that I have some mixed feelings about it. It is apparent that the whole 'emotionally engaging' stuff that BioWare has been going on about has had a profound influence on this soundtrack. There are very few atmospheric tracks and the majority of the soundtrack consists of percussion heavy or otherwise uptempo and dramatic tracks that sound like you are constantly in battle or that things are perpetually on edge.

There are some familiar sounds here and there--for example during 'Normandy reborn'. 'New Worlds' tries to capture the atmosphere of its predecessor 'Uncharted Worlds' by using its leitmotif and elaborating on it. While this is mostly a successful attempt, the added complexity to this track make it less suitable to prolonged exposure (for example, when you're looking at the galaxy map for extended periods of time). The new love theme 'reflections'--or what I assume to be the love theme because it uses a similar sounding theme and is equally very short--deserves some mention here as well. While only one minute and nineteen seconds long, it is really atmospheric and the reverberating percussions recall the mood of Mass Effect 1's 'Love Theme' and is easily one of my most favorite tracks on this soundtrack.

Instead of tracks that reference specific worlds there are a lot of character specific themes this time around. My guess would be that those tracks are used on the planet or location where you are to recruit this specific character, so in a way they could still be world specific tracks. The character themes themselves are all very elaborate and progress through different phases. For example, Tali's theme starts out as a really moody and slow moving piece with some ethnic sounds in there but then transits into something that sounds like an uptempo combat track with lots of electro influences only to finish with some epic sounding strings.

I liked all individual tracks on this soundtrack. They are all very well crafted and often have some interesting progression that really convey some sort of movement in the game--perhaps a transition to a different scene or maybe things get really tense because you are under siege. It is also nice to hear some old themes reworked into new arrangements; it makes it feel like this is truly an extension of the Mass Effect universe.

And yet, I think this soundtrack stands in the shadow of its predecessor. The first soundtrack was a lot more synth-heavy while this soundtrack opts to incorporate some more orchestral work--it does retain a lot of synth, though, so don't worry. While this certainly makes it sound more grand and epic, it takes away some of the uniqueness that the first soundtrack had. Whereas Mass Effect 1's score sounded more like late 70s and 80s sci-fi, this is certainly more reminiscent of what we remember from 90s science fiction classics like Star Trek TNG and Babylon 5.

While, like I wrote above, the individual tracks unto themselves are all fine pieces of work, as a full soundtrack it comes across as really unbalanced. About 80 or 90 percent of the tracks try to capture this really epic, combat-heavy feel and there is little room for some more slow moving, melodic, or otherwise atmospheric tracks--something that the first Mass Effect soundtrack succeeded in very much. This makes listening to this soundtrack very exhausting because it tries to be tense and epic most of the time. While in the end it is not as balanced and enjoyable as a stand-alone soundtrack when compared to its predecessor, I am convinced that it will mesh really well with the game itself. This is mostly due to the fact that every individual track is more capable of standing by itself due to the more elaborate composition and arrangement (oh, and the tracks are mostly a lot longer this time around).

As a score for a game it is very well done, as a stand-alone soundtrack I'll pick the first soundtrack over this any time. Are you ready for your more emotionally engaging, dark and epic middle part of what is to be a soundtrack trilogy?

Note worthy tracks: 'The End Run', 'Horizon', 'Tali', 'Reflections', 'The Collector Base'

I have to concur, they took a different direction with this OST and I like it thus far.

Garrus track is especially fun.

Yes, the Garrus theme is indeed very interesting and makes me wonder how it reflects some of his character and development.

Yeah, I feel  somewhat the same about that one. It never seems to really grab me. It just... passes along. Or something.

First ME soundtrack you can pick up at places like amazon.com or brick-and-mortar stores (since it was made into a hard copy). ME2 you can also purchase at places like amazon.com or itunes or Rhapsody (which is where I got mine since I have an unlimited sub). There isn't a hard copy available or planned, however.

I got it on amazon.com last night (the MP3 section), but I think it should be available on iTunes by now.

I really liked the st, it maybe wasn't as atmospheric as the first but I think it was of a higher quality overall.

I especially liked Samara's theme, Freedom's Progress and Horizon. It feels like Jack Wall got some really heavy influence in some tracks from the Homeworld ST (which imo is one of the greatest soundtracks ever, along with Trent Reznor's Quake ST)  Also I catch some Farscape impressions in the female voices singing throughout a number of the tracks, human voice yet alien-esc sounding words(sounds a bit arabic yet I know it's probobly not).

I think Jack did a great job and captured a great many things I like about Sci-Fi music: Atmosphere, depth, mystery, synth, orchastra, drum progression, luls, highs, breaks and more.

Overall an excellent album in my eyes, good job Jack Wall!

I like the "progression" of music between the two. Mass Effect 1 does have a lot of "synth" to it, the new more orchestral sound is like the music evolution of Sci-Fi. It represents the change from game one to game two and the change in time. Mass Effect 1 was a 70's scif-fi maybe Mass Effect 2 will have more of a 90's sci-fi feel.

Just bought it and listening to it now, really good stuff. It's more "moody" than the first soundtrack but that gives it the darker tone they are going for in ME2

Worth a buy if you enjoyed the first OST, if not try out the samples and then buy it

A lot of them sound like they're pretty interchangeable with each other in a game playthrough, which is great because that's what they're originally meant to do. It holds enough of your attention while you're playing without coming across as really distracting.

On the other hand, as an album to listen to, the character tracks in particular don't necessarily sound like traditional leitmotifs where there's an overarching melody in particular that you immediately attribute to the person it's based on. The only track that remotely comes close to that in my opinion would be Samara's but that's because I remember part of the tune from her character reveal trailer.

If anything, the character tracks [not character themes] come off as very atmospheric and ambient, which would also work in cinematic cut scenes on top of the actual gameplay and exploration.

Hearing "New Worlds" had felt very nostalgic to me amusingly enough, it was very recognizable and pleasant to hear the new arrangement of the track.

Having an orchestral arrangement certainly changes overall feel of this soundtrack in comparison to the first one, and for that very purpose it works very well.

I would've loved to hear a large variety of ethnical instruments played in unorthodox ways if only to definte the sheer depth of the multi-racial universe the game is set in. I could sit back and just wonder what kind of music would the hanar listen to, or how would the quarians and salarians sound like when they sing?

I've only listened to a few tracks so far, but for me Samara's is the standout. Even based on what little we know I can just tell it fits her character perfectly. Exotic and sultry and at the same time demanding respect.

Speaking of Samara, can anyone point me in the direction of the track that plays during her reveal video? I can see hints of her actual theme in there, but I'm talking about the heavy bit that starts off the video and is found interspersed throughout combat oriented scenes. I think it was also briefly in one of the class trailers, perhaps for the Soldier.

The End Run, Suicide Mission, Tali, and Reflections have to be my favorite tracks out of all of them, especially Tali.

Good review, RVonE. I also have the soundtrack, and I can't begin to describe how much it ups my anticipation to play the game next week. And I already have thoughts running through my mind about what sorts of sounds our grand finale will have. I doubt they'll switch composers, and I hope they don't, but this really is some special music to go with such an epic trilogy. I particularly love how he worked in some elements from ME's theme track into Suicide Mission. It made me all nostalgic - enough so that I went back into the title screen of the first one and just listened to it. Gah, now I need to go buy the original's soundtrack.

Maybe they'll bring back Sam Hulick for the last one's soundtrack, too? That would be a treat.
