What are the latest rumors for the Mass Effect movie?

One rumor I heard, I got from somebody at EA, who said that he heard some talk of it from "people in the know."  After all, the makers do have a relationship with EA, Bioware and the makers of this game.

Anyway, what he said he heard was that the story is too big to tell in just a movie or 3, so they are thinking about an innovative format that will also allow for faster releases and more profit, while not cheapening the whole thing.

The idea is to release a big movie, then release 2 or 3 straight to TV/DVD movies that will utilize much of the set, crew and workers from the making of the movie.  More bang for the buck.  But the idea here is to flesh out the story.  Then a new big screen movie is released, and will again be followed by some straight to TV/DVD movies.  In the end, it will be finished with a book end final big screen movie.

Personally, I love that concept and hope they see it through.  Think about this, they atart off with the back story and flesh it out with some scenes of Shepard doing his heroic deed that makes him a candidate for the Spectres.  Then it goes to the part of him in his tryout, and the killing of his observer.  At some point this movie finishes with some climax from the game.  Then a couple more movies to flesh it out, that go straight to DVD.  Then, a big screen finale that involves the choice as to who lives and dies, and sets off the Nuke, and final battle at the Citadel where Sovereign is destroyed.  Now, this is what can help speed up production...the start to the ME2 storyline starts off with a straight to DVD movie.  IMHO, this would finish with the raid on the collector ship.  The 2nd DVD movie would finish on the derelict Reaper.  The third movie would be a big screen movie that involves the Suicide mission.  It is possible that a 3rd straight to DVD movie could be added that involves mostly recruitment of the people in the story.  Some of them would be part of the very first ME2 movie, and immediately after, it could be a movie entitled recruitment where most of the recruiting of the other members takes place  In the final DVD movie, Legion would be recruited.  Some build up, and the suicide mission would be the finale of the ME2 part.  ME3 is huge if much of the DLC is added to the story line, and how could it not be?  No way you leave out the From Ashes section or the Leviathan DLC from the movie  So, with that in mind, I would think this is where a subsequent Big Screen movie is in order.  Start off the invasion with a block buster big screen movie.  Then From Ashes and Leviathan could be centerpieces of a couple of the straight to DVD movies.  The final battle, of course would be the final book end big screen movie.  Some build up would be in order but the majority of the movie could be centered around that final battle.  In fact, it might take two 3 hour movies to do it, much like the Harry Potter movie did.

Here's the thing for me...I want the movie to recreate the story in the game with a lot of fidelity, and then just flesh out some of the story that was only eluded to during the game.  I would rather not see departures from the story if at all possible.  The only alterations that should take place are things that make the story more correct and believable, where some things were done for playability.  For instance, we don't need every single mod or weapon from the MP part of the game.  And fighting the Thresher Maw on Tuchanka could be a huge addition as well as correction.  The game arena style that was featured in the game could be fleshed out into a more believable and dangerous conflict.  In the game, the Thresher couldn't actually get to you, just spit at you.  I like the way it actually attempts to devour Grunt in the cinematic trailer.

But this format of many DVD movies could be done alongside the production for the Big Screen movie, and each other which would allow an unprecedented quickness to their releases.  I could literally see one released every 6 months, or even quicker.

Only thing I heard is it will be at least 5 years before it would be in Theaters or at the very least be in development.

That makes sense. Would also explain why there isn't much news about it right now.

A couple of things that Bioware and EA should think about are the fact that when the movie is released, a whole new group of players will be interested in the game. They would not need a whole new game, just a polishing of the present game. I think I will make a new thread about that.

What is a bad idea, and why?
