So I'm in my hall and it sucks to be honest, I can't wait to learn now.

It appears that people keep to their own race here and I'm surrounded by Middle Eastern and Chinese, both speaking in their own languages and keep to themselves.

Its freshers week and I'm stuck on my laptop. I'm in a room nowhere near my university so I "hang around" with students who don't go to my university and don't speak to anyone who does go to my university.

Freshers fair is on Wednesday and the societies start Sunday I think.

This isn't honestly how I pictured university. My halls feel desolate despite the hall manager saying that its full. This is pretty depressing. Worst of all I've forgotten the power brick for my Xbox.

Yikes, I go to a commuter (not community, commuter) college, so I can't really give that much advice on dorm life. The best I can really serve up is something that I'm sure you've already heard: go to the bar, go to the library or join a club. That's where you'll meet the most amount of people with common interests.

Yeah, I am. It's a hall for both post and undergraduate.

Am currently studying.

Germany isn't big on dormatory housing so I never had any of those issues. But the universal truth is, you're either getting accustomed to it fast, or your student life is gonna suck.

Have fun.

Go by myself? Not only I have to get a train by myself but I'm also by myself, just talk to random strangers and get pissed alone?

I was an idiot for not taking up a hall associated with my university so I don't have a student union bar to go to. As I said, societies start Sunday, I have introductions tomorrow so hopefully I make friends, if not then I'm going to mad from isolation.

I'm an introvert and could spend all day on my Xbox in my room which would keep me entertained but I have no power brick. When I get bored, I get bored quickly and need to do something exciting hence the freshers week.

I see. Yeah, our campus has a bar so that's why I suggested that. It has been the easiest way for me to meet new people: Order a drink, watch the game with the person next to me. It's a nice way to kill some time, and you'll have a drinking buddy. However, I haven't really made a constant friends (going to each other's house, doing something outside of the bar), so if you are looking for people like that, then it is certainly not the best method.

Honestly, the way things sound for you, your best option for building a social life is to just meet people in class. I'm sure the dynamics at your school are much different then they are at mine. People don't meet up that often here unless they are really close because most people go home after school. Since you are in dorms, those buds that you meet in class could very well be the people you hang out with for your time there.

You could also ask around about parties, but since you're introverted, I don't think it would be the best for you.

Until you make friends or get your Xbox up and running, I'd suggest catching an art exhibit, footbaal game or theatre show. The funny thing about universities is there is always something like that going on. They are good ways to pass time, and you just might end up meeting some cool people. At any rate, I'm starting to sound like a brochure, but those suggestions are the best that I've got.

If I know people, going to a club is fine, it's just being by yourself. I become incredibly awkward. But I do enjoy thrills. Thankfully there is an extreme sports group to join so thats going to be interesting.

Yeah, I'm going to get an oyster card and perhaps visit the art exibitions that are free in London, perhaps visit Trafalgar square, get mugged maybe etc.

Don't sweat it NBear. Most residences are very good at creating an environment that helps you make friends and or acquaintances. The first few days in a new situation always take a wee bit of getting used to. Just by the very nature of student residences you will meet people and find like mind people that like Xbox gaming and such. (I work at a University.) And there is no way I would go to a club by myself either, so many people are in the same boat as you.

How are you going to meet new people if you only do things with people you know?
