If other people want to work for an optimal outcome in their own game, then how does that affect you at all? You can just roleplay it as 'impossible' and make your 'hard choices'.

that, in fact being a tad facecious I would even say that it is what RPG is all about.

I agree. The whole point of an RPG is freedom of choice. So, having the outcome be one of three (maybe four?) seems ideal:
1. Save the village, lose the keep.
OR
2. Save the keep, lose the village.
OR
3. Save both keep and village.
OR possibly pull a Redcliffe on both?
All should have specific impacts, requirements, losses, rewards and tactics involved.
