 if i were to decide to be king would i still be able to be the warden commander on awakening or would i have to start a new game?

I'd say "who knows" none of us have played Awakening. But seriously: yes you seem to be able to continue as any living character

If you character is alive, you play your character.

If your character is dead, you play the new warden commander.

I would certainly hope that you have to continue from a game set in DA:o or that would defeat the purpose of it being called an "expansion"

I would imagine yes but wouldn't be sure. I would imagine yes because even if you become King or Queen, Alistair or Anora are the ones who are considered to be the "real" rulers, like how Elizibeth is the Queen of England and her husband is that creepy, racist prince.
