Well a molecular sword can cut through ME tech armor, and a sword is too slow to trigger your armors shielding. That is why it's intimidating, it's specifically designed to circumvent the protections armor gives you in ME. Note that phantoms can and do instant kill you with it. Sometimes using ultra old technology like swords can be surprisingly effective against super high tech stuff.

Except Lang and phantoms have shields that would protect them from gunfire while they move in, and also know how to move silently, AND have a cloak that makes them very hard to see. You act like they have no tools that would allow them to do anything besides stand there flourishing a sword like the idiot in that video. A melee build infiltrator can be very deadly, and their swords make them an even better version of that build.

Overload is an amazing ability that pretty much anyone can learn.

I thought swords made sense in the ME universe, and Phantoms are actually one of the coolest and most interesting enemies in the trilogy.

Swords are also pretty handy when you can cloak and strike up close.

Swords are also outdated by ME3's tech before they're even introduced.

Because there's better technology than swords in ME3.

Edged weapons will always be effective for certain tasks, be it for utility or combat. That said, the swords used in Mass Effect are not exactly your everyday knife.

Knives will never be outdated. The wedge is a timeless simple machine that will always exist in some form or another, be it for regular utility, or actual combat.

The swiss army knife and factory of a wrist communicator kind of makes it pointless though.

I will say that the need for a good 'face' villain is paramount in video games. For instance, every one of the boss fights in Metal Gear Rising were brilliant because the boss you were facing usually had a very good backstory, or was mysterious enough that the backstory didn't matter.

The problem with Leng is that he wasn't portrayed as intimidating enough in the game. For instance, in Metal Gear Rising, the first time you encounter one of the bosses, he beats the crap out of you. Leng kills an asthmatic assassin and runs off.

As a concept, I like the character a lot. In the books (well, book, the one he was good in) he demonstrated the real Cerberus, the ugly yet fascinating machine of lethal force, racism and precise brutality. The subtle things about Kai Leng were his reactions. He was disgusted by a naked asari, he was manipulative enough to get past Aria, and had the willpower to persevere despite being badly wounded. He was a villain, sure, but he was a damn good villain. Just a shame we didn't get that impression in the games. He should have served as a wake up call to Shepard about what Cerberus really was, not just be a cardboard cutout.

Machines break, though. I'd still like to have my SOG with me in case I got hit by an Overload and my fancy gear shorted out.

I didn't say edged weapons were outdated. The reason swords like Kai Leng's are outdated is because omni-tools exist.

A sword like that is much more dynamic and effective at close quarters. Not to mention it would be a additional tool in the Cerberus' operative arsenal, and not the only one.

The tech is old hat, but they can still kill you dead just fine. It makes the Phantoms damn near impossible to engage in melee combat unless you're a good or lucky enough shot to break the sword.

They're not very talkative. They just spout garbled words through their angry helmets.

Takes some getting used to the fact that you don't have the luxury of being able to survey the location of nearby enemies with a tiny sensor map like you can in SP, so those bastards just stand there cloaked and can insta-kill you from behind if you're not careful.

I see no reason why that would be the case.

Sure, I guess if Kai Leng needed to shave without burning his skin then his sword would be worthwhile carrying around.

Well, it fallows a similar logic as to why swords are better than knifes in a ancient battle.

I doubt that was why Phantom were such deadly enemies. Cloak was a defensive move triggered when they were low on health.
