I think it's the start of the article:

BioWare has to scale back on the time spent on the romances in the grander scheme of the project. "The follower characters in general are enormously complex," Gaider says. "They're a massive investment in terms of gameplay and storytelling."

When something starts out with the words "scale back" it's rarely a good thing - hence people immediately thinking "Oh no!"
They later go on about how adventuring with that companion is also part of the romance, which is fine by me, since my usual playstyle involves having the LI as a partymember throughout the whole game.
It also makes me think that the romance will be more "integrated" into the scenes compared to how it was in many of the older titles - something which ME3 also did rather well IMO.

When I read that I just read it as basically "this is a massive game and we can't afford to spend the same percentage of our time working on romances because we have so much stuff to do."  I don't think that neccesarily means significantly reduced content.  It probably just means romance content is more focused and they didn't scale romance content up just because the game is bigger.

If I had to guess...

Ladies: Cassandra and Sera, so you have ye olde "stern warrior with a secret soft side" and "loveable rogue" archetypes.

Gentlemen: Varric and Dorian/Mage Elf Guy/Whatever. Not that we know much about the latter, but provided he's anything like his leaked description, he's LI material. Varric needs no explanation - he IS the explanation.

I have my doubts about Vivienne and Grey Warden Dude, simply because of their apparent ages..? Now, I have always been a-ok with age gap relationships, they make me d'aww, but I don't know that a wider audience would be interested and BW may not be willing to take that gamble. Not that we have any clue how old our protagonist is supposed to be.

Aaand I think that's all the romance speculation I'm gonna put out there til this time next year.

If we knew all the teammates, I'd guess Cassandra and Sera (with Varric and Cullen as the male LIs) , but we don't know all the teammates yet. What if Tallis is part of the team (as she clearly should be) ? She would be even more likely than Sera to be an LI. Certainly if we suddenly see a character introduced who is dressed like Morrigan and Isabella (which is to say, having a rather limited amount of clothing) then she's obviously an LI. And since we only have Cassandra and Vivianne confirmed (with Sera highly likely), that leaves at a minimum one more female character that we have no idea who they are, and it would be nice if for once we actually had more female teammates than male ones, which would mean 2 more unknown female teammates. So there's definitely a lot of unknowns right now. The safest thing to say is that since everybody has wanted to romance Cassandra since before DA2 even came out, everyone will almost certainly be getting that chance :) . Everything else is at best an educated guess based on what we 'think' we know, which is a lot less than what we actually 'for a fact' know.

PS, David Gaider's comments about the 'follower characters' romances taking so much effort suggests that it would be wise to add a Kelly type NPC romance, maybe the girl who runs your main keep, she wouldn't ever have to go anywhere, and the romance would still be a lot of fun. I really liked Kelly, NPC romances can be fun if done right, I didn't like her replacement (Samantha) as much though, but I liked the reporter girl (although there was almost nothing to that 'romance', I'm not even sure it should count) . So the key is that it be done right :) .

Clasically there will be four - at worst - three LIs.
1) Itsy-bitsy Vivenne (similiar to Morrigan) OR tsundere Cassandra (similiar to tsundere Fenris)
2) Sex-obssessed/vulgar rogue Sera (similiar to Zevran and Isabella damn she even looks like their daughter)
3) Angsty-sweet blonde Cullen (similiar to Alistair and Anders)
4) Sweet magister Dorian/that-bald-elf-from-concept-arts (similiar to Lelianna and Merril)
If I we are lucky this time we'll get someone fresh - the unnamed Warden (he's brunnete, so unlikely, but still) or even the Iron Bull (how the fangirls will handle this XD?). No Varrik though, let's face it, he's too good for us :(

Agree with only one correction - number 4. By descripiption in the leak (and by logic of previous games) Dorian is supposed to be something like Alistair \\ DAA Anders (all Cullen is sharing with those A/A is hair color, not personality). Still something sweet but not in way Leliana and Merrill were.

Beyond the fact that I simply like Cassandra in general, I'm really hoping she's a LI because we haven't had a romancable female warrior yet and I think that's long overdue.

A li male with long hair would be a nice change but I don't think any of the current npc's, we have seen can pull off the long haired look

I'm more looking forward to the male LIs because they're more of an unknown. I'm really hoping Grey Warden dude is romanceable and Dorian sounds interesting. Without a personality transplant I won't be able to think of Varric as anything other than a wacky uncle and if Cole is a companion his emotional damage is even worse than Fenris'. Of the women, Vivienne seems pretty classy from the few bits of dialogue we've heard and could be a possibility. Cassandra might be a good counterpoint for a PC like Anders in Awakening. They'd drive each other nuts. Depending on what is meant by the word "brat," Sera could be fun or a nightmare.

Too much time to speculate in. Ah, well. Enough time wasted for me for now.

Yes. All our description of her to art was, "Don't make her too pretty." We don't care what color her hair is.

They hit it out of the park with her look if you ask me.  The whole character looks, writing etc was just excellent.

If I had to guess, I'd say that people on these forums believe we spend as much time thinking about the romances as they do. As in just thinking about the romances, and not actually writing them. So us writers are tapping our chins for weeks on end, imagining things like what new and wonderful hair color our intrepid fans would be really excited about and how that would affect their background and personality.

Intresting. I still found her pretty though, but then again I'm into tomboys

Of the current 3 females revealed/deduced(Sera/Cassandra/Vivienne), My guesswork would be the contrast of Sera versus one of Cassandra/Vivienne. I'd personally prefer much prefer Cassandra based on what little seen so far of those 2.

I'm actually hoping for some new characters in romance department.
Although I love Varric to bits he strikes me as "the one woman (Bianca) kind of a man" and it should stay that way.
Especially since it's kind of hard to find a good bromance in the game. I'd even endorse the quest of reuniting him with Bianca if she still is out there somewhere...

Cullen is a good bet with his feithfull fanclub though as I said I hope for some other options. He's nice enough I guess but he just doesn't appeal to me on any level. Not even as a companion.
A charming rogue is always fun :o:wub:

As for the ladies, Cassandra and Sera seems to be a strong lead.
Vivienn's age might be an obstruction for some but then again people didn't seem to mind Samara's "wrinkles" so why not.

Does rewriting count as time spent thinking about them? ^_^

I'd actually like it to be a surprise. It'd be cool to know who the companions are for me, but not who is romancable.

Agree. Varric is amazing! But Bianca is a charming girl. I wish them to be happy.

I hope to find  another M-LI in the game.

I would romance Varric if it was announced he was available, though I doubt it with BioWare. Trolled me with Vega in ME3.

Cullen, though not confirmed as a party member yet, seems a sure thing and will certainly be a LI if included.  And Varric, while a dwarf, might be getting the Garrus treatment and bumped to a love interest due to popular demand.  HOWEVER, I really don't see Bioware giving straight ladies (and gay men) two recurring characters as the only love interests.  My bets are that Varric is either not a love interest & thus a new character takes the second male slot, or...what with the introduction of dwarves, elves & Qunari as race options...I'm thinking they'll broaden the available options beyond just two.

We have Dwight Howard, Steve Nash and Kobe Bryant. We will surely win the championship.
