Normally, you are restricted to doing 5 missions between Horizon and being forced to go to the Collector Ship. There is, however, a way to squeeze in 6 missions should you wish to. The key is to end the 5th mission at a hub rather than on the Normandy. There are two places you can do this: Tuchanka and Illium. While most missions end with Shepard back on the Normandy, this does not apply to the Loyalty missions on Tuchanka and Illium. In those cases you are sent back to the starting point for the mission somewhere on the hub. As long as you don't get back onto the Normandy you can just do the next mission available on that hub world. So, you could do Grunt's mission followed immediately by Mordin's. Or you could do Miranda's mission followed by LotSB.*** The following suggestion on mission sequencing takes advantage of this "loop hole."

For your first three mission you can pick which ever you like. For the upgrade levels listed below I chose this order:

1) Thane recruitment (viper sniper rifle, smg upgrade)

2) Anomolous Weather: This requires you to buy the star chart for the Pylos Nebula at Baria Frontiers on Illium. The mission can be found by scanning the Planet Canala in the Dirada system. This mission yields the third damage reduction upgrade allowing you to research hard shields.

3) Tali recruitment (tempest smg, assault rifle upgrade, smg upgrade, geth pulse rifle if played on insanity or hardcore)

By the time you have finished these three mission Grunt's loyalty mission will become available. I recommend doing this mission as your fourth mission because once you complete it you get a discount at Fortak's store where you can buy a number of useful upgrades.

Your fifth mission now takes advantage of the "remain on the hub after mission done" loop hole. This is Miranda's loyalty mission on Illium.***

Once Miranda's mission is done you will be back in the Eternity Bar where you started. So now go finish up any little stuff you want to do on Illium, like return the locket you just found, and go talk to Liara to start LotSB. Make sure you don't go back to the Normandy after Miranda's mission. Just talk to Liara and then head over to the taxi stand. (Important: before starting LotSB make sure to ask Liara about Samara and Thane if you haven't yet. There is a bug that will prevent you from recruiting Samara if you don't talk to Liara about her before starting LotSB.) When LotSB completes and you leave the Shadow Broker base you will be back on the Normandy and will now be told (not asked, told) to go board a Collector ship.

My upgrade level for completing these mission in the above order (which includes the upgrades from the DLC such as Kasumi, Overlord, Zaeed, Firewalker) include the following:

SMG 5/5
Sniper Rifle 3/5
Heavy Skin weave 3/5
Assault Rifle 4/5 (would be 5/5 if you choose renegade path on Zaeed's mission)
Biotic damage 4/5
Damage Protection 4/5
Heavy Pistol 4/5
Shotgun 4/5
Tech damage 3/5

Some of these number obviously depend on your hacking/bypass skill and how much money you have to purchase upgrades and which upgrades you purchase. For instance, I did not include heavy weapon ammo or medigel because those are low priority items for me.

One additional note about following this sequence: the earlier you unlock the Shadow Broker base, the sooner you will get the bonus upgrades available there.

*** Addendum: If you have already done Jack's loyalty mission before doing Miranda's mission, then you will be forced back onto the Normandy.

I never did a playthrough like the one suggested. I might the next time I play ME2.

1)Miranda's loyalty mission(smg upgrade)

2) recruit Samara for the biotic upgrade

3)Jack's loyalty mission and another biotic upgrade. The other reason is that it's easier to side with Miranda(I do all the time) or Jack and still retain their loyalty.

4)Zaeed's mission (heavy weapon upgrade)

5) & 6) Mordin and Grunt's loyalty mission
In Mordin's loyalty mission there another heavy weapon upgrade and with grunt you get a discount at the store that has a biotic upgrade, assault, pistol and shotgun upgrade
At the other store close by there is another heavy weapon upgrade

Also with the sniper rifle you can get upgrade at the Citadel, Omega and when doing Grunt's(or rather Okeer's) recruitment mission

sniper 3/5
heavy weapon 5/5
biotic damage 5/5

The others I'm not sure since it varies for each playthrough that I do.

Similarly, you can use the 'not returning to Normandy' exploit with both Morden and Grunts
loyalty missions on tuchanka. After completing one, your returned to the landing platform instead of the Normandy bridge. You can now start the second loyalty mission on tuchanka, instead of being forced to do the collector ship.

I tend to do them based on "urgency" mixed with a bit of headcanon. Here's what my canon Shepard did, IIRC. Note that I recruit Kasumi and do her LM as well as Overlord and Firewalker before Horizon.

1) Recruit Tali: This is really because I just want to add Tali before all the LM requests start piling up, but my IC reason is that she's in geth space and Shepard figures (correctly) that her squad may be in trouble.

2) Jacob LM: It's a distress call and thus presumably important; the survivors may not have much time.

3) Mordin LM: Maelon appears to have been kidnapped and it's unclear how long he has to live if that's the case.

4) Recruit Thane: To try to prevent whatever assassination he's planning in the course of recruiting him (though obviously this fails).

5) Grunt LM: Shepard's worried about how long he can keep whatever's bothering him under control.

At this point the Collector Ship triggers. Shepard doesn't go to the derelict Reaper immediately because she wants everyone 100% indoctrination-proof before attempting it (OOC: so I can recruit everyone and have them all survive the suicide mission).

6) Recruit Samara: Looking to wrap up the recruitments at this point, plus we're already going to Illium for...

7) Miranda LM: Miranda says that she's set up a time and place for this but *does* not say that it's right away, so this one gets deferred a bit.

8) Thane LM: This one doesn't trigger right away, but it sounds urgent when it does - presumably Kolyat isn't going to wait around forever to carry out this assassination attempt.

9) Samara LM: Morinth isn't likely to stay put or refrain from killing for long (though my canon Shepard fails this mission by using the wrong dialogue choices in Afterlife - I don't like any of the potential outcomes if you do go back to Morinth's apartment).

10) Garrus LM: Shepard was planning all along to try to talk Garrus down, but Fade's network sounds like a security threat that should be investigated once she has the time.

11) Jack LM: She seems to be holding it together reasonably well, so this one waits until relatively late.

12) Tali LM: She states outright that the quarians would give them considerable leeway as to when they can have the trial, and neither she nor Shepard are aware of what happened on the Alarei at this point.

At this point I investigate the Derelict Reaper, activate Legion, and do his LM before the crew gets kidnapped, then off to the O-4 relay. I use a few side missions such as the Normandy monument, the one with the crazy mechs, the wounded quarian, the crashing ship, and the shipwreck on the mountain in order to trigger further conversations with Legion (the dialogue with the rest of the crew is pretty much used up by now).

Since LOTSB and Arrival weren't part of my canon Shepard's story, I ended with her going back to the Citadel and did my final save on the Presidium near Anderson, presumably for her to negotiate the terms of surrendering the SR-2.

Following Horizon, after completing any 5 missions, whether side quests, recruitment missions, or loyalty missions, you will be forced to go to the collector ship if you are on the Normandy. The only way around this is to end the fifth mission NOT on the Normandy: i.e. either Grunt's, Mordin's, or Miranda's loyalty missions. Those three missions end with Shepard on a hub world, not on the Normandy, meaning you can do the next mission on that hub before going back to the Normandy and getting forced into the Collector ship mission.

After the Collector ship, you are free to do whatever you want until you decide to go pick up the Reaper IFF. Only after picking up the IFF does another timer start to count down. In this case, however, the mission that occurs once that timer expires is the Collector kidnapping, which is not really a mission, per se, though it does count as one as far as advancing dialogue (for instance, if you are pursuing a romance).

The other requirement for Disabled Collector Cruiser is that 8 squad members must be recruited. Grunt does not count as recruited unless he is awakened from his tank.

I also usually do Anomalous Weather for the Damage Protection upgrade. Also I tend to do Archeological Dig Site and then MSV: Strontium Mule to get a Heavy Skin Weave. For the other missions, I tend to go by my class and preferred weapon since all the main line missions have different weapons and mods. Grunt's LM is good if you are going Shotgun heavy since you get a free shotgun upgrade and then the discount, but that is really only Vanguard and Soldier before DCC, unless you are in NG+.

The only missions that count are ones where you get a mission complete screen. So things like dealing with Conrad, or Hacking for Liara do not count.

Ok, so ... I just finished the "Collector Ship" Mission & I was able to do 6 Mission's [Thank You for that Helpful tip]. And I was wondering if Anybody knows how many LM's You can do before You have to go & get the Reaper IFF from the "Derelict Reaper", I have finished recruiting all of My Squadmate's and I need to do [Miranda , Garrus , Jack , Tali , Samara , & Thane's LM] any Help is Greatly appreciated?

& 1 last question about Squadmate Loyalty. I have completed Jacob's LM (& He didn't kill His father [Will He Survive?]), & I have completed Kasumi's LM (& I convinced Her to Keep the Data [Will She Survive?]), & I have completed Zaeed's LM (& I let Him Kill Vido [Will He Survive?]), & I completed Mordin's LM (& I used the Paragon Interrupt to Stop Him from Killing Maelon - and I kept Maelon's Data for a Genophage Cure [Will He Survive?]), and I completed Grunt's LM? And I have already Upgraded the Normandy, Thank's?

You can do as many missions as you want before picking up the Reaper IFF. There is no reason to just do loyalty missions. You can buy 4 star charts from Baria Frontiers on Illium that will open up new clusters in the Galaxy for you to explore where you may find new side quests. You may wish to do every mission available before getting the IFF.

The only mission you cannot do until you pick up the IFF is Legion's loyalty mission because you cannot even have Legion as a squad mate until you get him on the Derelict Reaper. If you talk to him after you get him, but before you use the Galaxy map, then you can pick up his loyalty mission and do it right away.

As for who lives and dies in ME2, check the sticky thread about the Suicide Mission. For ME3, basically, loyal squad mates will generally live. There are exceptions that depend on the actions you take or don't take in that game, while some of your former crew are scripted to die no matter what. (For instance, by saving the cure data you have guaranteed that Mordin will die in ME3 even if he survives ME2.)

I added an Addendum to the original posting.

If you do Jack's loyalty mission before doing Miranda's mission, then at the end of Miranda's mission you will end up back on the Normandy. So if you want to use Miranda's mission as your fifth mission in order to do a sixth mission on Illium, do not do Jack's loyalty mission.
