Honestly? I'd prefer they just let the ME series die. Carrying the series forward with no Shephard makes things seem a little forced, ESPECIALLY with the incredibly divergent paths the endings of ME3 take. There would be nearly zero way to apply any imported state or continuity between the old games and the new, unless they went the prequel route, a la Halo Reach. But I really cannot imagine that being a solid, good experience knowing that anything done will be overshadowed by the Reapers and the eventual threat that will confront the galaxy.
In fact, I'd say that would be a problem with another ME game in general. The Reaper represented not just the death of every sentient being in the galaxy, BUT TENS OF THOUSANDS OF SAID PURGES OF ALL LIFE. How can you top that as a antognistic force? It was too monolithic to be truly addressed in ME3, but it will definitely still be too monolithic to follow up in ME4. So I say just let it die. It had a good run.
More on topic, I'd be interested to see Bioware try and tackle a lower production value title. Maybe like an episodic series or a game that is more experimental in nature, way with their story structure or interface. Do something unique and interesting that doesn't have the "need 4 million units sold" price tag attached to it.

Ditto. I loved ME but you got to know when to say bye. I'll still maintain that EA will force Shepard back.

Shepard was first and foremost a "blank" and it will not be hard to replace a blank.
The companions are a different story, but eh. They're rather cliche anywho. They're a matter of execution rather than innovation.
Only way ME is gonna move on is a.) prequel as you said or b.) severely downplay ME3's endings to the point of trivialty, reapers out of the picture, maybe set several decades or centuries or millenia in the future, to the point where Shepard is more legend than history. That and make all the endings have absolutely no effect.
But I do believe a "We're gonna save the universe!" scenario is unnecessary. Frankly, I think Bioware is too dependant on the "huge unknown evil" plot device. Maybe they could do a more localized threat-crime syndicate, evil corporation, illuminati, whatever. (Though I am a bit tired of the "evil corporation" plot device.) The size of the force is not as critical as its implementation. Seriously, the Reapers were mostly a bogeyman throughout the series, with TIM and Saren being the more direct antagonists.
And there is not a way in hell EA will just let ME die. No sir.

Another impressive, story-driven and button/awesome-connected Role Playing Adventure from creators of Dragon Age II and Enging Of Mass Effect 3. This time, Player absorbs the role of omni present hero who has thus far chosen to remain in shadows, as gray entity: The Dialogue Wheel itself. Express the thrill of violent spin attacks, roll over fearsome, ****ty nelf girls and romance dragon LIs in ways only a dialogue wheel could. Written by Jennifer Hepler. DLC includes Barbed Wire one can wrap around the Dialogue Wheel, for increased performance in bed chamber and battle field both.

They don't need to "top" it. There's absolutely no need for escalation of plot--ME was too big anyway. The ME series would benefit tremendously from a smaller plot with a smaller antagonist.

That's a fair enough opinion. I think not every game needs to top the previous antagonist, but I think ME was defined by the Reapers.
That being said... the endings themselves crush and oppress the future of the series. They overshadow any previous conflict and they taint all future content with such disparate realities that it is beyond difficult to reconcile without trivializing everything.

Pretty much.
I suspect that if they do move forwards some of the following will happen - depending on what ending you chose:
1) The Reapers mysteriously vanish after some time.
2) Synthesis didn't successfully carry over to the offspring, so eventually it was completely "bred" out of existence - with the exception of maybe a few of the original Asari and Krogan still being around and having it.
Potentially dark spin if they want to drive the nail in some more: it caused horrible mutations and cancers in many of the offspring before being gone completely.
3) Rejecting Star Brat will probably be retconned completely - either that or the threat of a new cycle won't come up because you're right in the middle of one, with plenty of years to spare so that it won't be the focus of the game.

That isn't really what they said. They said they're too busy to CONSIDER it, not that IF they weren't so busy that is what they'd be making.
I think the fact that they chose to create a new IP instead of going back to JE is telling in and of itself.

Honestly, in that case I can quite understand them rejecting the ending choices and picking a canon. Only then because of the enormous disparity.
