Not necessarily. From what little I know of JE, not having played it, it doesn't seem like a universe in and of itself, just a game.
By that I mean, ME is a universe. There's so much more going on in the world than Shepard. There's the whole Krogan thing, the Human-Batarian rivalry, the Quarians as nomads and now with a home, or the Yahg.
As I said I haven't played JE but how much WORLD stuff is there? Or how much is solely related the the main character and his/her story?

I guess it has more to do with inspiritation.
Someone got a great idea for a new IP, proposed it to the head honchos and they approved it.
I believe that they've said they looked at JE a few times and didn't really come up with anything to revisit it.
The new Star Wars game is a given, it's friggin' Star Wars - a setting that is widely loved and that's guaranteed to sell copies even to the vast amounts of non-Bioware fans - I find it hard to think any game developer would turn down that opportunity (especially with EA already having a free reign over the license, so they don't have to pay through the nose for it).

I'd say Jade Empire is of a much smaller scope "world-wise" than the majority of Bioware games.

It may not be as realized as Mass Effect but I don't think there's an absence of a universe with Jade Empire.EntropicAngel wrote...

It has a setting, just like any other game with a story. Off hand, there is the Phoenix Gate, pirate slavers, the barbarian hordes to the north, the conflict between heavenly and demonic spirits, the eastern John Cleese-land that was mainly played for laughs (but still exists). Comparing how developed it is with Mass Effect, which has a trilogy and a bunch of supplemental material behind it, is a bit stacked. Comparing it to the original Mass Effect would be more appropriate.EntropicAngel wrote...

Azaron Nightblade is probably right too, it is a "smaller scope" of a setting generally. That doesn't mean there's less potential, or diminish its unique value among BioWare IPs as the only eastern themed one so far.

Personally I hope they don't even try to top the Reapers, if the main character in the next game isn't punching so high above their weight, maybe they can be defeated at the end in a way that isn't completely preposterous.EntropicAngel wrote...
They don't need to "top" it. There's absolutely no need for escalation of plot--ME was too big anyway. The ME series would benefit tremendously from a smaller plot with a smaller antagonist.

You're missing out; the two best games of the last year or two have both been story-focused zombie games. In Exile wrote...
If the new IP is zombie related, it will become one of the few Bioware games I will not purchase. There are genres I dislike - post apocalyptic settings chief among them - but zombie games have so little interest for me that it's not even a difficult choice in not buying.
I doubt Bioware will ever make one though; too far from their typical formula.

Honestly, in that case I can quite understand them rejecting the ending choices and picking a canon. Only then because of the enormous disparity.
If they set a canon, maybe Destroy or some variation of it, I would be back on board, 100%. That should have been the only option, anyway.
Synthesis precludes not only any future conflict (as it was proposed), but also any future interaction, at all. Why communicate via speech when every sentient being is part computer? And Control has the entire Reaper force on a leash for Robo-Shephard. What conflict could exist, between Krogan or Yargh or space pirates, with that nuclear option in the background? Destroy, with the Reaper threat eliminated but the playing field somewhat normal for future sources of conflict, would be the only logical solution to have the series continue.
But I'm seriously doubting that will happen.

Huh well i would quite like a modern day RPG or perhaps even a time travel story.
Modern day? Screw that! We already are about to get that pretentious Ubisoft crap for "modern day."
I would take Sepoy Rebellions or Opium Wars over Modern Day.

They'd make one where you go around saving the world from the zombies by recruiting the nations of the world, though.

I love Project Eternity but it's unrealistic to expect Bioware to be involved in it.
My opinion of the ideas expressed thus far...
Western rpg, would always be compared to Red Dead Redemption.
A death sentance for the game if it came up short.
A Pirate rpg, Black Flag Assassins Creed is coming.
I think a Pirate rpg would be tricky.
If they could tie it to Pirates of the Carribean movies that might hel'.
If well researched and historically accurate it has potential .
Cyberpunkt/Blade Runner/Matrix type.
Would be compared to the Matrix plus CD Projekt is working on a game like that. Not in favor.
Time Travel/Alternate Universe. Dinosaur Beach is one of my all time fav books. Chrono Trigger/Chrono Cross has lots of fans from Square.
So yes to either.
Spy. Well Obsidian had alpha protocol . Although considered a failjre you can see it had potential .
Problem is Bioware considered doing a spy game , EA supposedly killed it.
Bioware denies EA killed it,.

Modern Day. Quantic Dream does those. One company doing them is enough.
Z ombies. Not interested.
Horror.
Resident Evil, Silent Hill, even something like Dead Space.
Not interested .
Maybe if it was based on the Cthulhu Mythos I might change my mind.
Finally survival. The Last of Us an example. Maybe.
Would depend on what ended the world for me, again no zombies , and how the people in my party reacted.
That's all for now.

I hope Bioware does an RPG for there next video game.
I hope they don't.
They've been playing the double-game for too long. If they want to diverge from their RPG roots can makie it clear with a new IP that is a non-RPG.
The watering down of great RPGs is getting tiresome from Bioware.

The IP is owned by Sega actually. If Sony owned it the game would have been a PS3 exclusive.
I was also joking (Hense the big grinned smily) and knew it would not happen.

I stand corrected.
Regardless, A lpha Protocol was considered a flop.
I think Obsidian would do a sequel if it's up to them, but sadly it isn't.
