I don't want a controller our cats could use. They do so very little right now as it is.

If you have a controller with a design similar to an Xbox or Dualshock: hold it backwards, then imagine a sharper change around the thumb's connection to the hand.

It may not be, but I won't know until it's in my hands.

Finally a controller with the potential to have the precision of a mouse. Valve knows what they're doing and has spent a lot of money researching and designing this. It'll be great to get to test this for myself and see how it is.

Wow...are you really on the BSN? So fair and objective? No childish snark?

Hmm, I don't know... I like the design, but it looks very unpractical to me. I wouldn't know where to put my fingers when gaming. But can't say much till I've held the controller in my own hands, of course.

Nah, not yet, and it still has nice features that I've been wanting in a controller. Like that 3rd bumper by the handles. But it has less buttons than I'd like, but with a keyboard it's a minor complaint.

The button placement is well...strange and touchpads aren't that great of an input method so I'll stick with a mouse/keyboard and the 360 controller for the time being.

What the hell??

It looks incredibly intuitive and well designed to me, and something that has the precision of a touch pad in place of the stupid cross pad? How can you say that?

When I said "looks," I meant the aesthetics. Was that not clear?

It looks retarded. It may be well designed in some ways (I think the buttons below near the palm of your hand are a very clever touch) but it still looks stupid.

I saw this today and I have to confess it looks a little odd. The XYZA buttons seem a bit spaced apart (I do use an Xbox controller for some PC games). I think I will have to reserve judgement until I have it in my hands!

My first thought when I saw this controller was that I was looking at an unfinished prototype. Like there should have been something more where the two touchpads currently are. Then I realized those circles *were* touchpads, and it seemed reasonable. A d-pad won't cut it when folks need to play a point and click game on their TV.

I'm also cool with it aesthetically speaking. It's minimalist and sleek. All I want out of a controller is comfort and a minimum of fuss. This seems like it may deliver that.

Who uses the cross pad for anything? All movement is done via the control stick. Why would this touch pad offer superior control over that? Even if it's more sensitive, you seem to be trading in physical feedback.

Anyway, even if it matches up to a controller, it's still inferior to K&B for any game that actually works well with a K&B like an FPS, a party-based RPG or a 4X game.

But this may be my general dislike of touchpads, which I find inferior to a physical mouse in just about every single way.

According to the details, the Steam controller pads will have some kind of haptic feedback. With the pads having real physical borders unlike phone game UIs, and some feedback when you use them (I understand haptic feedback is basically the little buzz when you touch a UI element on your phone), I'm very curious to see how it will feel. It could be pretty intuitive, like using a trackball mouse. Better than joysticks in any situation that benefits from more mouse-like control.

(though I do find that some games are more intuitive with joysticks, rather than keyboard+mouse, so I'm not impyling those "situations" are all encompassing)

One of the great things about the controller is the modibility that Valve is endorsing.  It may not be long and we'll have inserts that include a track ball or a thumb stick and people will be able to modify the controller to their personal taste.
