I wouldn't call ME2 bigger than ME. Rather more detailed and varied.Evongelo wrote...
They pulled it off well with ME2, but now the game is huge. ME was not as big as ME2 is now.

One option is simply to add flashback videos and possibly some sort of "character history" option at character creation

Lots of us are at loggerheads over some of design choices in Mass Effect 2. Let me query you on something. The developers have said that Mass Effect 2 was designed to be accessible to new players, a point that has been heavily referenced as regards the story. My question to you is this:
For Mass Effect 3, do you want to hear the developers say that they are working on making the game open for newcomers like now or flat out stress the importance and necessity of playing the previous two games?
Bonus questions: Can they reasonably make the game accessible without watering down the content? Do you want them to even try or instead expect the audience to be caught up going in?
Good choice for developers is too make a choice for new comers.
Example, new player will choose in some dialogs things like who alive who died what was happened.. etc.
As in ME1 we choose type of childhood.
Developers are going to make a bridge using DLCs, so...

My concern (and excitement) is how ME3 will continue if Shepard died in ME2. Bioware did set up the ending as a suicide mission, so ME3 will probably begin deciding that the previous Commander Shepard died going through the Omega 4 relay, along with the team (except Joker). This sets up a scenario for newcomers, and might ****** a lot of people off who played ME1 and 2. However, this is also very beneficial to fans-- I (and perhaps others) am curious to play ME3 without importing a character, just to see how gameplay changes.
Since Bioware stated that players cannot import their ME2 save files if their Shepard died, I assume ME3 is setting players up to play as a new Shepard. I am interested if importing Shepard completely changes the gameplay in ME3. How will a new Reaper saviour be explained? How will the plot be decided in ME3 if Shepard died in ME2, such as deciding if Wrex or Ashely/Kaidan died? Will they be automatic depending if you're fe/male? Can gamers whose Shepard died in ME2 and started a new save in ME3 decide the game's fate by choosing certain dialogue options, to ensure that even though Shepard died in ME2, their ME3 game fits the continuity of the previous two games?
If it's true that ME3 will encorporate over 1000 variables from the previous games, then the fans have a lot to look forward too, instead of having their choices predetermined like in ME2, and I assume that newcomers will definitely be lost for a bit Just look at the major plot developments in ME1 and 2 that newcomers in ME3 will miss. Little easter eggs that carry over from ME1 were also evident in ME2; Gianna Parascini and Conrad Verner, for instance. I'm sure any newcomer in ME2 was wondering, "how does Conrad Verner know me?" and veterans were thinking, "Great! I'm encountering this weirdo again. Last time I was nice; I'll shoot him this time." All these little things within the game have a huge backstory that will confuse newcomers and decrease the gameplay experience. Appreciation of plotlines in novels, games, stories, movies, increases when people understand what is going on.
For example, saving the council: they're dead if you start a new game in ME2, and I assume starting a new game in ME3 will continue in the same vein. It doesn't do much in ME2, but the ME3 ending could be vastly different if the council was saved; this would only be possible having played the first ME.

I suppose it boils down to the fact that, unlike ME2, I don't want to hear the pitch, "it's okay if you're new to the series." It should be, "we set out to make a trilogy where your choices shape not just one game but three, and we're dedicated to making ME3 accomplish and fully realize that vision. Players who make the journey across the first two games will find themselves richly rewarded in the third, as the consequences of how they played the first two games finally unfold before them."
True, choices that have greater consequences from the previous two games would be a great reward for gamers. I believe ME2 was better than ME1, even though there were disappointments regarding the save transfers. I'm sure Bioware is listening to its fans and will make up for this deficit in ME3, and we will see how the ramifications of our actions in ME1 and 2 will affect ME3. Although fans may feel Bioware is alienating them in favour of newcomers, fans have the most to gain from ME regarding replay value.
So...long post. But I trust Bioware.

Since GoW and CoD style games are still the most popular currently and people already start wetting them selfs just because GoW 3 apparently has a new enemy type and maybe a new weapon, I'm pretty sure that ME3 will atleast have very similar gameplay as ME2.

The interesting question is whether BioWare wants to make a game that truly has choices and consequences, or if they'll rather play it safe commercially and critically (I remember IGN saying ME2 was "overly referential," which is the exact opposite of what most fans thought. Just think about what the majority of critics will say if ME3 turns out to be want we want it to be.)

I think it's a little silly to ask a bunch of hardcore fans whether they want the developers to put more effort in making ME3 rewarding for old players as opposed to trying to make it more easily accessible to new ones.

This a hundred times over. They said they could go really crazy with the consequences since this was the last in the trilogy...I hope they do. I would LOVE for there to be real, meaningful consequences to choices we've made.

I recently bought red dead redemption and from what I can tell they haven't done much to dumb its system down for new players like me curtain people, locations, and conversations come up that refer to the first game and while I don't get it entirely I still really really enjoy the game I don't feel cheated I like the fact they didn't go through an hour of explaining this is what you did in one to meet me here and now when I actually want to go back and play one to see what happened to bring about 2. I think this same methodology should be fallowed for ME3 two lost alot because they dumbed it down for the ps3 newbies two wrongs don't make a great memorable game series.

wish we could have the possibility to leave Milky Way in ME3, and go in another galaxy as well, like Andromedathat would be so freakin awesome
1) That's not the topic that is being discussed here.
2) The Milky Way hasn't be explored not even a 0,1% and you already want to go to another galaxy?
3) It already takes Mass Relays to navigate thought the inner galaxy. There's no actual technology (in ME universe) that would allow to travel thought the Deep Space and between galaxies. Not even the Reapers have been able to navigate much thought Deep Space, just enough to hide themselves.
