do people still play NWN?
i played the game extensively several years ago, but haven't played recently. when i found that i could no longer play online through gamespy at least a year ago, i just quit playing.
i'd like to play again if there is actually a community who still plays, but i don't know how to access online play anymore and i don't even know anyone who still plays.
do people still play NWN?

Yes, there are some worlds with 40+ people online at times, tons of worlds with 6-12 people online regularly, modules still being released and worked on, and I think something like 500-1000 typically online for NWN.
What are you looking for, mainly? A persistent world?

yes, i'm looking for a persistent world, if not a few of them.
i'm going to have to install my diamond edition again, although it still requires the final patch, if i'm not mistaken.

What are you looking for?
Action? RP? Worlds focused on max level? Worlds with slow leveling? Worlds focused on grouping? Worlds with harsh death penalties? Worlds with lax death penalties?
Do you want a lot of balance changes? Are you fine with downloading haks?

It really is a shame there isn't a more public method of informing former players of the drastic changes that has occurred to NWN support in the last few years but at least with the BSN forum still active a viable outlet persists. I can't help wondering what happened to all the great members that never even made the social transition from the legacy boards to BSN.... and there are lots of them. Fortunately, there still exists a dedicated core of NWN faithful to help the community function adequately and continue to promote the game.
One aspect of your revisited NWN gaming I feel is important to mention... any custom haks, utilities, content or other resources you may have put off downloading from the IGN Vault in the past... do it now! That includes the latest CEP and any other commonly-used customization packs. There has been rumor of Vault issues that may make things more difficult to access. The jury is is still out on that one. There is what amounts to a mirror site that has been recently constructed *someone... please post the link to the new Vault for the OP* as a back-up of that data (or so I understand it to be).
Anyway...
Welcome back! You've been missed!

Install that and many of them will show up.

Can also look around in that forum and even post in search of a world if you want.

You can give Thain a try. No haks or other downloads required, just direct connect to thain.no-ip.org. Be sure to visit the forums at http://www.thain.org..._plugins/forum/ for additional information on class changes and other features.

okay, something odd happened. when i attempted direct connect for thain at thain,no-ip.org, it found the server, but then it wouldn't let me log in. it said:
connection error: your cd key is already in use on that server.

Did you buy your copy of NWN from GOG.com? If so, you'll have to ask them for a unique CD key.

I recommend checking out Never Launcher for finding online servers to play with.
Lots of other great stuff out there too. Great Links at the NWN info site that Amethyst Dragon is supporting.

Someone couldn't remember the address of the sort-of-mirror for the vault, which is fine. However, I am surprised that nobody else thought to post it. The Neverwinter Vault.org link.

I just got back into playing both NWN and NWN 2 in the past couple of weeks. Currently thinking about finding a PW to play on but I haven't seen any mention of ones that would interest me (I'm looking for more action oriented with optional RP similar to the old Defiance servers back in the day if anyone remembers those).

I am not familiar with the defiance series, but you may be interested in one of the PWs listed on NWN Server List's Action PW page. Though I have no affiliation other than as a player, I play pretty regularly at World of Greyhawk (forums here) and several of the servers on that list are quite active.

Isn't higher ground one of the more popular action servers?
