He may be dead in your playthrough, but he is very much alive in all of mine. And alive is alive, damnit.
And it's not so much shoehorning when the game will be taking place in Orlais and they specifically said Loghain, should he survive Origins, is going to Orlais. It's more a natural progression.

The other thing would be what both World of Warcraft and Skyrim did very well: "Environmental Pornography". Building a world that really immerses you into it with a combination of art style and the game engine itself(and it does look worlds better than previous iterations)would be a pleasant change of pace from my experiences in the first 2 games.
