Zombie survival is probably the most popular genre in video gaming.  However, is there any good zombie survival RPG? I can't think of any.  I'm looking for  Western RPG (NOT Japanese RPG) - with stat buildings, equipment collection, converation trees, NPC recruitment, moral choices, etc. - that is set in a zombie apocalyse.

State of Decay on PC and 360 fits pretty much all the criteria you mentioned. You form a group of survivors, which you can play as any one of. There's sort of a story there, but the best part of it's just building and maintaining a base to simply survive the apocalypse. Permanent death for your characters means things can get pretty tense too.

The novelty wears off after a while and it becomes repetive.

There's a kick starter project called 'Dead State.' I think you should take a look.

So far from what I've seen it's basically about doing the same thing over and over again - find supplies, babysit your fellow survivors if they feel angry or scared, clear zombie infestations and slowly take back the area, etc. Nevertheless, it looks interesting but I'd rather wait till they add support for mouse and keyboard.

Zombie horror is the most popular genre? That's really news to me. Ugh. I really hope if that's true this genre doesn't begin to infect - pardon the pun - RPGs. There are no words to describe just how much I actively hate zombie horror as a genre.
