I'm doing a playthrough with a female Shepard and plan not to do any romances. I already got to the point with Kaidan where Shepard tells him, "Sorry, this was just a battlefield thing." I've also had the conversation with Liara where Shepard makes the joke about "It sounds like you want to dissect me in a lab" and Liara misses the joke and gets embarrassed. Normally, my next conversation with Liara would be the one where she says, "Actually, I was talking about my interest in you," and Shepard can say "I'm not interested in you in that way."

However, for whatever reason, Liara instead just says "I get the feeling you want to ask me something," and the only options are to ask about Benezia or Asari Culture. I don't really mind this, but does this mean the game assumes I'm already locked into a romance with Liara, meaning she'll show up at the locker and in Shepard's quarters later on? Or will the second conversation where I can turn her down politely still pop up later?

Are you in between major missions? I am sure you are aware that dialogue only advances after the major missions, not the little assignments.

I am, but I thought the dialogue with the non-human characters sometimes progressed without the completion of a major mission.

Dialogue can progress from either a major story mission, or several UNC missions. This is the case for every character.

I don't think you are locked into Liara. I think you just haven't progressed to the next one yet.

It is possible to advance past Liara's lock in without confrontation, but that occurs the next dialogue session after she says she is interested in you, and then mentions Ash or Kaidan (if you are romancing them). If you didn't get the conversation with Liara about Asari reproduction, then you are probably still ok.

The Luna mission is one of the side quests progressing character dialogue. Liara however doesn't have that many dialogue options to begin with.

I did BDTS and got the next conversation with Liara, and told her that I just wanted to be friends. I did talk to her about the asari after that but ended the conversation rather than clicking the "rumors?" option to trigger the reproduction dialogue. So hopefully that's settled it. If I recall correctly, the only new dialogue after this with her will be after Benezia dies and the generic one where Shepard can say the prothean visions are keeping her up at night.
