Wait, we aren't?

Really concerned about the voices in my head now.

If one of them has a somewhat low but bored sounding voice that's me, just fyi.

Phew.  Hey, what's up?

You could always go with a virus. That's a common machine trope, right? Maybe R&D it from the dead Rannoch Reaper. Have people do hit and runs on Reapers until it's up and running. Fun, fun, use those war assets. Not the best writing idea, but it's also not a magic solution and it's different from a super weapon. Sort of like the Cylon virus in BSG.

Why has it never been used before?
Why are Reapers so defenseless towards such a thing?
Why don't the Reapers use it on the allied fleets?

Use the virus to overload their barrier or damage their organic cores?

Well, the example I used had the machines get "sick" while they died a slow death. However, those were humanoid machines. Reapers are a little different. Since the game has you focus on War Assets, I think the virus weakining them to the point where they are fightable makes for the most satisfying solution in this universe.

To all three questions: Because it hasn't been developed yet and the Reapers haven't faced it or had any idea about it.

Did you read my post? I said develop it after the Rannoch arc. That would be one of the rare times the organics had to study a Reaper.

So then then there's no way out. The reapers are too powerful, so anything that actually defeats them is going to be some kind of asspull, because the other two games do not present any potential chinks in the reapers' armor.

Unfortunate, but true. And it's by design.

That's why I don't have a problem with a device like the Crucible, if it were more naturally introduced and discussed across the game.

Ditto. I have no problem with the concept of the Crucible, or with a superweapon itself. I just wish it had more foreshadowing and a better execution.

I made a thread similar to that a long while ago, basically reused The Crucible for that purpose

Basically, the Crucible was a necessity. Without it, there's absolutely no proper solution to deal with every reaper in the galaxy. The relay network is the only viable option for the narrative, but you can't just have it be something hidden in the Citadel, because that's a convenient weakness that should have been exploited ages ago too.

No, it isn't.

If this was a linear story, making a satisfying conventional victory would be fairly easy without significantly changing either the Reapers or state of the galaxy.

Well, it does make sense. That's kind of what I expected the Crucible to do in the first place with the whole gather up a galactic army and take back Earth thing.

You've been saying this for quite a while, David, but I haven't seen a proper explanation as to how

Did I not post an explanation last time you asked this? An amalgam of various smaller ideas and victories.

It absolutely is a necessity. The trilogy goes out of its way to show that the Reapers are way overpowered and numerous to be defeated conventionally.

I'm starting to think that this is what you think Shepard is capable of.

There is no way to have a conventional victory with this setup. By the final act, the reapers have occupied every major world and occupy just about every system. They vastly outnumber the entirety of the galactic fleets, have tons of monsters made from the dead, and can indoctrinate. They are hugely overpowered and numerous. How would you even have a victory without the Crucible without significantly changing how difficult it is to even destroy a single Sovereign class reaper? There's also the fact that the entirety of the galaxy's fleets are having trouble with the reapers in just one system. By that rate, there would be no ships left to even meet the reapers head on in the next system, let alone the one after that. It would be a long drawn out fight to extinction.

Which is why there's a different final act? And different development of ME 3 in general?

Tonight's the night...

Not very original, but I convinced a lady friend to dress up in nothing but shrink wrap and duct tape so we'd have the couple theme.

Different how? What would be changed without changing the reapers themselves?

Just make sure she has a better ending to her night than the show did, sir.  Shouldn't be tough, though.
