New Dark Souls 2 gameplay videos:

Everything is on screen and not narrated so you can get a feel of the game.

http://www.incgamers...a-footage-leaks

It all looks wonderful save for the running animation. Something just looks odd about it. Other than that the game looks awesome. My initial concerns of the enemies being too weak are unfounded too so ignore that part. Since seeing solo-players go through the beta, it looks just as challenging as the first game.

Also:

Edit:

Might as well make this the "Dark Souls 2 thread" for general discussions on the game as well as where all the latest information can be shared as opposed to it just being for the beta videos.

Edit:

New facts derived from the beta videos. Some you probably already know (or have heard of) but some you probably haven't.
  • The Brotherhood of Blood is new the Dark Wraith covenant who hunt down undead for their blood (not their humanity).
  • The Blue Sentinels are the rivals to this covenant and hunt down the Blood Members. These members are summoned to the worlds of the invaded. They cannot attack enemies and enemies don't attack them. Their sole purpose is to kill the invader. Presumably, their covenant is located somewhere else in the world and judging by the Blood Leader's comments, their sole duty is to eradicate the Brotherhood of Blood.
  • Judging by the prior covenants, there's probably more covenants with direct opposition against one another and who are at with war/odds with one another.
  • The shield breaking ability (which currently is broken as it can be spammed) breaks through an opponent's defense (draining all their stamina) allowing for a riposte.
  • Character faces are far more detailed. They don't look like plasticine faces anymore. Beards do seem to be available for male characters now.

  • There is an Amber herb that can be used to restore sourceries, miracles and pryomancies without the use of resting at a bonfire but it only restores them by seven amounts (so not a full restore).
  • Combos seem to be much more essential in melee combat and when combined can lead to some quick attacks and useful techniques.
  • Holding Y (or triangle on PS3) enters the second move-set for dual wielding as opposed to just pressing Y (which still leads to two handing a weapon).
  • Hollowing has stages now. At first your skin and eyes simply change but then your character starts losing their hair.

  • That symbol next to the health and endurance bars is actually the symbol of the covenant you're part of.
  • Bombs return. There's a magical bomb which also causes a stagger. Bombs also now have a radius effect which means that the user can suffer damage from them.
  • Faith and Intelligence is now required for some pyromancies.
  • Archery is a lot more solid now as the archer can move with more agile while shooting arrows and they do a lot more damage.

The user also has more Dark Souls 2 videos from prior weeks if you're interested. He's also a good player (not like the other crappy beta players who clearly are the guys who never made it past O&S or are new to the series altogether) who makes playing the game look good (which DkS does look like once you learn the mechanics).

Edit:

New covenant details revealed.

Guess whose back?

Call me skeptical but I really think Dark Souls 2 could do with a hard mode because this is looking too easy.

The guy had two phantoms with him, of course it's gonna be easy if you do that. There's one bit in the video where he runs off alone after a shiny, then encounters two enemies at once. And what does he do? Runs back to his phantom buddies so they can do all the work. I hate using phantoms. It feels like cheating.

I don't recall early-game enemies doing that much damage anyway, but of course we don't know where in the game this video is. At one point, a phantom does get hit once and it takes off a hefty chunk of his bar, so there's that.

But yeah, do want. Still waiting on visual confirmation of Catarina armor, but I suppose that's not at the forefront of most people's minds.

And they're part of that boss fight. Lovely.  The wheel skeletons were pretty high up on my annoyance meter, above the glitchy Blighttown mosquitos and just below the Anor Londo archers.

Thank you, From Software. Thank you so much for bringing these guys back.

The sarcasm is strong in you, Luke Shep. :P If you had a decent shield, they weren't as bad, but in the Painted World Tunnels, it was super annoying. Thank the maker for havel armor.

The Set-Up Armor for the Warrior/Knights are looking good, the wool-y cape/spaulders remind me a bit of the night's watch. For the Souls are Dark, and full of terrors that insta-kill you. I'd seen some of the pre-beta previews too, and the game's looking sharp(the frame rate seems notably higher)and the mechanics under the hood are more refined now. Even without the original director(as far as I'm aware), this will likely be the last great game I get on the PS3.

My character couldn't wear Havel's set. (Well, she could, she had the ring, but she didn't.)She ran around in robes and an onion hat. I also used a Hollow Soldier's Shield the entire game. I loved that thing.

But yeah, those tunnels. If I got cornered, it was over. I could only block one skeleton before my stamina was depleted, then the rest tore me to shreds. At least in the catacombs there was a nice big area to run around in.

I actually managed to play this on the show floor at euro gamer expo in London last weekend, I'm not sure if the section that i played was just cobbled together for demo purposes or whether its an actual segment of what will be in the final game, I also have no idea if the difficulty was as it will be in the final version, I imagine there is a hell of alot of tweaking to be done before release, but from what I played, the sorcerer had difficulty in dealing with the regular mooks in tighter enclosed spaces than the melee character builds did but had a much easier time beating the mirror knight boss at the end, whereas the melee characters went through the regular mooks quite easily (except the for the dark dungeon where u had to put your shield away and light a torch to see.....that part was a pain for all character builds lol) but really struggled with the boss, this is all however based on a 20 minute play session, I imagine that with abit more time to familiarize with the boss mechanics he wouldn't have been an issue.

All in all it felt and played very much like the original dark souls but with some nicer visuals, looking forwards to it :-)

Actually the male animations in this game look good. It's the female animations that don't. Oh God, they just look so horrible.

(Mind you, the first game didn't have good female animations either but they were more palatable than this)

The Black Armour edition is just the game, the steel case, and the soundtrack, and is probably what I'll end up getting. They had a perfect opportunity to give me a Siegmeyer statue and they blew it.

Make sense for them to give a statue of the "default" armor of the promotional character. I've actually pre-ordered the collector's edition (which is only another £20) because I'm a DkS fanatic.

The Black Armor edition is like the Limited Edition of the first game which means you get it free just by pre-ordering and it's the price of the regular game.

The knight's armor looks amazing. I'm tempted to play my first character with just wearing this armor through the whole game. I love the free-flowing cloth on the back and its physics. (Mind you there will be probably be better looking armor in the game to find/purchase but for a "regular" armor set that knight's armor is amazing)

Everything shown in the beta thus far reveals that the game has just as much of an articulate design in weapons, environments and armor as the first and the new beta videos arising showing solo play reveal the game to be just as difficult as the first.

Apparently those unique red phantoms showing up in the beta are actually random and freely roam areas. If this is true then this means there will always be that element of surprise in each area with these enemies (who could attack you at any time).

Pssh, you people and your "sense."  Man dressed up like a pile of onions > sense.

The statue does look nice, but it'd just collect dust sitting on my shelf. So would one of Sieggy, I guess, but I'm rather attached to him. Default Armor Guy doesn't have the same draw, considering I never play as a character that wears that stuff, at least not for very long.

I noticed that being undead leaves you with a shortened health bar, similar to being cursed in DkS. I never played Demon's Souls, but I think that's the way it was in that game, correct?

If so, I may have to be human more often. Dammit.

My favorite gameplay video so far is this:

Ugh, I felt his pain when he got wedged between the bridge and that little ledge. And then he couldn't get his souls back. Cruel.

And lol at finally giving up on that phantom. Ah, Dark Souls.

Apparently, every successive death that occurs while you're hollow will shave off more of your maximum health, but I don't know what the minimum amount is at the moment. And invasions can now occur even if you're hollow.

Oh, FUN! Now I can get backstabbed while facing my opponent more often!

But there is this, a dev quote from a translated Famitsu article:

Tanimura: "There are many players who do not like invasions. We can't just tell them "then don't play the game!" We have actually paid very close attention to this view and have included a method besides being hollow to prevent invasions."

Probably a covenant. I'll take it.

Invasions made Anor Londo in NG+ unplayable for me. It got that bad. I had to unplug my internet. It wouldn't be so bad if there was no lag, but I really have no interest in PvP. It's just a waste of my time.

I'm loving the look of that new menu.

Agility (one of the new statistics there) allows for faster actions (raising the shield, attacking, running, dodging, item use and so on) so it seems to be essential for all classes and allows for further customization. You can't just be a warrior of dexterity now but one who favors faster attacks over strong attacks too.

The customization in DkS is just amazing so I'm glad to see they're adding even more.

I know the pvp "cap" in the first game was ~120. Now with Endurance, Vitality, Agility, and maybe Resistence depending on whether or not it's going to be useful now, I can see the cap being raised a few more levels.

And I'm glad that Attunement now governs casting speed instead of Dex. Now I have a little more room to work with in deciding how I want to build my first character.

Some things I noticed in the beta:
  • Enemies seem to be more aggressive in that they follow you so long as you remain in their sight and don't return instantly to their default position.
  • Some enemies are seen wandering about. This is seen in the videos showing people invading. Hopefully it adds more dynamical attributes to a region.
  • It looks like there are finally proper beards in the character creator. The swordsmen build (who was ready created) was sporting a vandyke beard.
  • It is possible to attack and parry with one shield. (i.e you can parry while two handing a shield and then riposte with it)
  • You can dual wield all weapons as they all can be combined into different combos. One new build is to dual wield TWO ULTRA GREATSWORDS whose strong attack constitutes to hitting both weapons down onto the ground for maximum damage.
  • If you kill a covenant/merchant NPC, you can summon their ghost from their tomb. (which is located where they were postioned while alive) to interact with them. (Not sure how I feel about this feature as it takes away the consequence of killing such a character but perhaps there is some consequence for it not yet shown in the beta.)
  • The Blue Covenant INSTANTLY summons a friendly phantom to defend you when you're invaded by a dark spirit.
  • Backstabs are initated by a special attack with its own button and are only executed if the attack lands meaning that backstabs are now easier to dodge from both enemy and player alike.

Adding on to this:
  • You can now "power attack" your spells, which consumes more stamina and increases casting time. Two handing your catalyst also allows you to cast more powerful versions of your spells.
  • Two-handing your catalyst allows you to aim your spells manually, and also block.
  • You can now manually aim with crossbows.
  • You can parry while two handing ultra-greatswords with the left trigger.
  • Having a higher Agility stat means faster startup frames for blocking and recovery, meaning you can escape combos that might otherwise put you in stunlock.

There are also different stances for weapons. Case in point in the video below.

The character is dual wielding two greatswords. One stance allows for quicker attacks (at the cost of lesser damage) while the other allows for stronger attacks (at the cost of speed). So in addition to two handing weapons you also have additional stances now allowing for entirely different combos with one weapon.

Greatswords also have a chance to send enemy players literally flying.

Game trailers have also created a gameplay montage of their beta gameplay showing some of the exploration, PvE, PvP, different character builds and all of the three boss battles in the beta.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCJ7kSumrR8

Here's one full boss fight below against the Skeleton Lords (a boss fight like the Four Kings but also with regular enemies involved such as the bonewheel skeletons. One user has nick-named this boss fight "Pinwheel's Revenge" which seems suitable.)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rz6ikDR0Kg8

Entire two hour gameplay beta test here uploaded by GameRage101

Very entertaining.

Looking so forward to this game. All the new features and testimonies by the beta testers affirm that this very much feels like a new game but is still has the Souls formula too. I thought they couldn't make the combat any greater but it looks like it has so much more depth now and it looks as if there's so many more character builds now to create thanks to increased character customization.

March can't come fast enough.
