You don't need to kill the Ancient Dragon either, you can just use a Bonfire Ascetic in the hidden bonfire in Black Gulch.

All of my bonfire ascetics are reserved for a much more important purpose than some silly soul of a giant. ;)

Soldier's Rest mooks will soon rival Vendrick's health bar. No, all of the mooks wil BE Vendricks.

I'm gonna get it. I'm gonna.

...I'm never going to get that helm, I know it. Once I hit my fifth pair of leggings I'll stop.

Yeah, I hate how randomly armor pieces spawn. I got 6 pairs of Llewellyn gloves in a row and no other pieces while farming those damn statues.

I never fought a lot of those horse statues, but I do have Llewellyn Shoes. It's the only piece I have of the set.

This game must think I'm one of those women that goes crazy over footwear. I'M NOT.

I'm sitting here in soldier's rest with an 18-intensity bonfire when I see the ghost of another player appear in full Catarina armor. IT IS POSSIBLE. I also may have chucked a firebomb at him because I loathe whoever it is.

My current tally: 4 Catarina Leggings, 2 Catarina Armor (I may have shrieked like a child when I got that the first time), 2 Broadsword +5, 1 Light Crossbow +5.

That's 9 drops in 17 fights. I'm using the traveling merchant's hat and covetous gold serpent ring +1, and when I remember after I off the turtles I pop a rusted coin.

I would really like to know the odds of these drops. I know they're considered "rare", but HOW rare?

Edit: just got the gauntlets. I now have everything BUT the helm.

You should throw on the Prisoner's Tatters torso and replace your +1 ring with the +2 version from the Belfry Gargoyles.

Getting the +2 ring would mean using a bonfire ascetic somewhere that's NOT soldier's rest. ;) (I'm still on my initial playthrough)

I might go get that prisoner's tatters, though.

The last two fights I got drops (although I died just as he did once, I got greedy and used a soul greatsword just as he attacked... so I couldn't get the drop. I choose to believe it was leggings.) So it's not really the frequency of drops that's the problem, the problem is there are SO MANY THINGS that he can drop. There's four pieces of armor and two weapons. I've never seen him drop multiple pieces at a time, but I suppose it's possible.

On the plus side, I can no longer tell if the enemies are getting stronger, I'm now at 21 intensity. Their HP seems to have stayed the same for a while now. The little bow guy always has 1130. the hollow that runs at me has 1196.  (No, that's incorrect. For some reason I thought that damage capped once you emptied their bar. I do 565 a hit to the first bowman, and 565 is a little over half of his bar.) I do the same damage, maybe they do more but there's no way for me to tell because I don't let them hit me. The turtles kill me in one hit, but that's normal, Sieg almost does, which hasn't seemed to have changed either.

edit:

I died just as he did once, I got greedy and used a soul greatsword just as he attacked... so I couldn't get the drop. I choose to believe it was leggings.)

This just happened again. I hate everything.

They stop getting more difficult after +7 intensity. If you need more bonfire ascetics, the Dark Chasm remains open after you beat Darklurker. You can farm ascetics from the phantoms.

I got the whole llewellyn set in about 30 minutes with the +2 covetous ring.  Guess I got lucky?  pretty sure there is no helm to that set.

Soon an oniony reign of terror and tears shall sweep across the land. Good luck with Vendrick. His soul and armor are in a sealed door, near the second bonfire at the Shrine of Amana after you kill him.

Human effigies are finite no matter where you are. There are no merchants that sell unlimited amounts, and ascetics can only help so much before making the game impossible. If the devs came out and said yes, they intentionally made the rings work the way they do to combat the effigy problem, then I wouldn't feel bad about using them. As it stands now, it just feels like a cheap exploit. Don't get me wrong, I'm not one of those idiot Dark Souls elitists who thinks that everyone should solo every boss in the nude while doing the channeler dance because lolsoeasyguise, I'm not saying people SHOULDN'T use the rings, I'm just saying I don't like using them. But I still do because I'm weak.

I didn't mind the hp reduction on death, I used the ring of binding for most of the early game. When I wasn't using it, I'd only pop an effigy when I was down to 50% health. Kept me rolling in the things until stupid Darkdiver Grendahl cleaned me out.

Well yeah that's true but there is a way to revert to human form infinitely at the Shrine of Amana.

Personally, I think the reduced HP system is a flaw of the game but fortunately only one you'll ever experience the first time you play the game. I'm on my second playthrough and currently up to the fourth lord with only 14 deaths (three of which were deaths by falling and one of which was suicide) 13 hours in. On my first play-through, I had around 50 deaths at this point and was 30 hours in. I also killed The Lost Sinner first go as this new character (whereas as my first character, it took several tries).

My point above being, is that subsequent playthroughs of any Souls game is always easier when you know what to expect and what to build, therefore I doubt I'd ever be faced with a predicament of being without effigies ever again and I think the same could be said for most others. Still, it was incredibly annoying when I was at the Lost Bastille facing the Lost Sinner in the first playthrough with reduced HP which only made the fight harder.

Doesn't help that From decided to throw in curse enemies and enemies with curse weapons where a curse reduces your health to 50% (that's what got me in that predicament the first time, not dying numerous times).

Seriously, the game is (IMO) finely balanced and challenging without them having to resort to that pathetic cheap way of increasing difficulty as you die by reducing your health.

Thanks mate. It was hard.

Think I'll rest for a year.

Bloody hell.

P.S

I'm so upset.

Upset because Solaire didn't appear in the game or at least a spiritual successor to him. I mean we don't even encounter a sun bro other than with other players. I was hoping to find Solaire (or a descendant) standing on some cliff with the sun in the far distance, wind blowing his golden locks, laughing jolly in the face of danger. I do like how the Great Lightning Spear description states that Solaire was worshiped as a god though. I guess (in cannon), god or no god, the awesomeness of Solaire made humans/undead of later generations think of him as one.

"A miracle that launches a great spear of lightning. Said to be the legacy of an ancient clan whose leader was revered as the God of Sun. The name of the clan has been lost to time, but the gross incandescence of our magnificent father shall never wane."

This clearly refers to Solaire. He became the sun after all.

I was also disappointed there was no Patches either. I thought he would be the running gag of the series after Dark Souls but apparently not. Pate replaced him but actually turns out to be the good guy.

I mean, with Solaire, it could be easy to have him turn up as a phantom since the "flow of time is convoluted" in the world with "heroes centuries old, phrasing in and out." One could argue "perhaps this only extends so far" but when we have Oscar's and Havel's dark phantoms turn up in the abyss, that debunks that theory.,

I'm actually stunned there was no Solaire or Solaire equivalent. I remember a while back, FromSoft asked a question to fans - Who is your favorite NPC in Dark Souls? Here's the results.

npc.png

He should have been a red phantom Dark Spirit, whatever they're called. They're red, anyway. There was absolutely no reason for Random Catarina Knight to hang out on a roof, so why not Random Sunbro? Siegmeyer fans even got Benhart of Jugo in Majula, who is essentially Siegmeyer waiting outside of Sen's Fortress. At one point he even says "I'm in quite the pickle."

Okay, so he wasn't *really* all that similar to Siegmeyer, but it was something.

Cool things happen when you attack Darkdiver Grandahl.

Anyway I realized I could just alleviate slowpoke syndrome by making Sinner's Rise +5 intensity or some **** before going into actual New Game + (no, I still haven't initiated it yet, I don't have much Dark Souls 2 free time and I'm just doing Multiplayer stuff now while having access to infinite titanite chunks)

I just wish my beloved Dragonslayer Ornstein armor was in the game. Right now I'm running around in max upgraded Heide Knight armor(nice poison resistance), but it's not quite as cool looking. The visible Aurous armor is really badass, but I'm still missing the gloves and helmet.

Congrats Shep for getting the whole set, maybe I'll try to farm it myself...

I don't believe there is. I suddenly feel incredibly lucky that both my favorite (yet silly) armor sets are in the game, the Catarina set and the Xanthous set.

I am mourning the loss of the Gold-Hemmed set, though. That was when I was actually trying to take my appearance seriously.

Elite Knight pants + no shirt was my fashion souls of choice in DkS1.

Now I think I might go Alva pants + butterfly wings.

The Royal Soldier set is aesthetically similar.

This is a very long and in-depth lore article Sony posted and stickied on the PS Forums. Enjoy. My cleric girl discovered some things I missed in Earthen Peak my first playthrough. Covetous Demon is still super easy lol

Ok, the PC release seems like a decent reason to revive this topic.

So let me just say that, while I've been anxious to get my hands on the game, I am more than a little annoyed at the horrid keyboard/mouse support in a game officially released on a system for which the keyboard is largely considered the primary input method.

There's a lot of great miracles I'm missing in this game.

Darkmoon Blade, Tranquil Walk of Peace and Gravelord Greatsword Dance were some of my favourites in DS1.

But at least you can get Sunlight Blade(I never got it originally because I didn't want to kill Gwyndolin) much easier and the Lightning Spear miracles became even better.
