So, thankfully I got a chance to play last night with my friend who owns a PS3. Some thoughts:

- Warrior's armor seemed pretty OP for the beta. Most of the time we were just tanking hits from the non-big enemies and mashing to win. Will probably get punished for that bad habit on release.

- Rolls have much less invincibility frames, and to me it appeared that there might be more than 3 tiers of roll speed.

- I don't know if the hitboxes are extremely tight now (meaning you have to be much more accurate with your attacks now), or if they're just off. It just felt weird seeing what would hit and what would miss with the Zweihander.

- Movement seemed smoother and faster overall, but animations don't exactly match up to the speed at which the character moves a lot of the time.

- Changing the dual-wielding stances appears to only work when your using two weapons of the same class. Example: Holding triangle with Zwei/Pursuer's greatsword would make L1/L2 do the strong moveset attacks, while holding triangle with default longsword/Zwei would just make you hold the left-handed weapon with two hands.

- Parrying and kicking animations change when two-handing big weapons. Kick becomes pommel-bash. Seemed a lot slower and less useful than the regular kick though.

- In order to correctly riposte after a parry, you have to wait until the enemy has totally fallen on the ground, and you must be in the absolute correct position (standing right above them from the front). Attempting to do a riposte while dealing with multiple enemies will be much more difficult this time around.

- Sorcerer seemed... really not that good. Spell damage seemed just a tad bit underwhelming (even when using L2/two-handing for stronger spells), but if we're able to stock up on herbs in the actual release (these replenish spell charges) I can see why the spells might be a bit weaker. The high mobility of the regular enemies in the area combined with the general squishiness of the Sorcerer, especially compared to the Warrior build, made it seemed a little gimped compared to the melee classes.

- The regular dagger (the starting weapon for the Sorcerer build, coincidentally) really sucks now. Character doesn't really move forward while swinging on regular attacks, so the range is worse than it was before. This became most apparent when I was unable to correctly riposte in one instance, as my character stood swinging at the air instead of stabbing the enemy on the ground. Ended up using the Zweihander instead (technically, I didn't have anywhere near the stats required to use it but the penalties were not implemented for the beta).

Double Post:

- Forgot to add, but lock-on will no longer autocorrect for you while attacking, you still need to pivot/aim your attacks accordingly.

So did you enjoy it?

It seems many things need to be modified (mainly values for damage and the like) and probably will be in the final release, hopefully.

I did, but disregarding the stuff that straight-up needs further tweaking, it felt a bit weird. Definitely the odd one out compared to Demon's/Dark.

Or at least his spiritual decendants will be in the game.

Those are some serious screens. That one with the giant mace reminds me of the menacing knights in Anor Londo. The mace makes the Dragon Tooth look like a toothpick :P Blue Sentinels are one of the new convenants, I take it - going for more interesting factions for/against each other. I can dig it.

Looking good.

Nervously hoping its going to be good. Rumors about it being easier has me nervous, even if it is a beta.

Apparently it's just as difficult if not more from what I saw of the beta footage where enemy AI is fairly improved. The only thing that looks like it's making the game easier are the gems which can be used to restore health. It seems you can have up to 99 of them too and they drop a lot from enemies in the beta. Hopefully they only drop a lot for that reason but even with them we saw people dying a lot and I guess they're just like the grass from Demon's Souls which remained a difficult game with them.

Definitely doubt it'll make the game ill-balanced, no more than the original. If you've collected enough humanity, that combined with a fully-kindled bonfire can make nearly any boss battle survivable. As far as difficulty, I believe they found workarounds do maintain the difficulty, i.e. those dying too often at one spot will get more leniancy. I forget the exact source - it was a preview video way back from kotaku, I believe.

I'm new to Dark Souls but I recently discovered whips. Will there be whips in the sequel and more importantly will there be vampire lords to kill?

Well there were some enemies in the beta using whips and whips were in the first game as you noted. It makes sense for the whip to return (considering enemies are using them and any weapon used by any enemy or a boss in a Souls game can always be acquired, I don't believe there's an exception here).

I don't think Dracula (or any vampire for that matter) will be popping up though. The best thing we've got next to vampires are the adherents of that new Dickwraith covenant who kill for blood. So become a blue guardian, use and whip and you can fight against them pretending that they're collecting blood for their vampire feasts in the castle.

Would be cool for vampires to exist in the Dark Souls universe though.

No vampires? Guess I'll have to make due with those wraiths. I guess you could say where there's a whip, there's a way.

Hold your rotten tomatoes, please.

Well you might encounter someone role-playing Kain or Raziel. I'm sure some fools will be running around with these builds in DkS2.

There you go, some vampires. Now where's my money?

No DLC for Dark Souls 2

“For Dark Souls 2, we don’t even expect any additional downloadable content because we want to deliver a full game, the full experience, to fans who purchase the package from day one."

They said the same for the first...

But in their defense the expansion came about because it was cut content they re-added to the PC version. They then released it as an expansion for console players who yearned for it. It was also reasonably priced and worth it too.

I wouldn't mind them developing another expansion down the line.

i would be rather disappointed if they are steadfast in their refusal of future pseudo-expansion dlcs, in the same vein as artorias of the abyss.

That awkward moment when the Belmont/Alucard roleplayer meets the Kain/Raziel roleplayer.

I'm throwing dollar bills on the screen. Nothing happens.

Speaking of which:
Kain vs Dracula (as in the LoS version of him).
I would pay to see that.

I'm currently going through the first after my long PC gaming draught. I'm nearing Ornstein and Smough...

So, should I just break my controller already or am I just fooling myself into thinking I might actually NOT end up in an asylum?

O&S are a lot less cheap than their archer buddies on the ledges outside. They're easy to read, provided you have them both onscreen at once. Once you lose sight of one of them, he's actually right behind you getting ready to impale or crush you.

And in case you don't know - concentrate on one of them and completely ignore the other. Most folks kill Ornie first, he's the greater threat.

So after finally beating Slamough and Dunkstein, I went to Darkroot. Then, I died from an onslaught of Forest Defender players (but not before killing two of them) along with their NPC friends. It was damn fun.

I sure hope there will be a "defender" covenant in Dark Souls 2.
