And here I come!

I have the PC version and the tutorial isn't very clear with all these unfamiliar console buttons.

Can anyone learn me how to:

1) roll

2) dash

and, is there a way to actually make this face a little better? Those cheap deaths have made me too ugly!

To roll, push the left analog in whatever direction you want to roll and press B once. To dash, push the left analog forward and keep B pressed.
To jump, there are two ways, and it depends on what you set in the menu: you either press (not push, actually click) the left analog as if it was a normal button and then push it forward, OR, a much better option is to set the jump button to B; this will lead you to having to dash + quickly double tapping B. Basically, like it was in the first game.

To improve the looks of your character, there's not much to do at the start except using a human effigy thus becoming human again, or get yourself summoned in coop by another player, help him/her and when you go back to your world you'll be full human and with all your equipment repaired + spells replenished. You'll need the White Soapstone or the Small White Soapstone in order to be summoned, though.
Otherwise, later in the game there's a ring that, when equipped, makes your character look human: mind you, your character will still be a hollow and thus have the HP penalty, the ring is just for aestethics.

Hope it helps. :)

  • I/J/K/L: Camera Controls.
  • ↑/←/↓/→: Selected Items and Equipment.
    • Up: Cycle remembered spells
    • Down: Cycle equipped items.
    • Left: Swap left hand weapon.
    • Right: Swap right hand weapon.
  • LMB: Attack with left-hand weapon.
  • RMB: Attack with right-hand weapon.
  • Shift+LMB: Interact.
  • E: Use selected item.
  • Z: Toggle walk/run,

  • Space: Sprint.
  • F: (While sprinting) Jump.
  • M: Toggle Block
  • O: Reset Camera/Target Lock/Release
  • N: Equiv to "Y" can press or hold.

You could try tapping Z while moving to roll, but I'm not sure if that would work as I'm on XBox. You can make yourself pretty again by using a Human Effigy.

Okay, I haven't even scratched the surface of the first game, and the person I was borrowing it from moved a while back.

If I got this, would I be lost?

Yes, but no more than anyone else was. It's a big world and easy to get turned around. There are a few references you might not get since you didn't get far in the original, but DS2 is fine as a standalone game.

I can still use the proper equivalent of XBOX buttons on keyboard, like A = Enter...

I don't know what happened. I had 4 souls, I used them and got near 3800 xp but I went to a tower that had 5 undead soldiers and they killed me. When I wanted to reach the tower I died in the road. When I killed all of them finally I didn't find my 3800 xp retrieval sphere. It was gone. Now after killing them and using other souls I have 1800 xp. :(

What happened?

Dashing is performed by pressing and holding the space bar while moving (so you hold down both W and Space Bar to dash forward). While dashing, you can press F to jump. Note that dashing drains stamina, and if your stamina is ever entirely depleted, you have to wait until it fully restores to be able to dash again.

To roll, you simply press the space bar while moving (unlike dashing, you don't hold the space bar). The distance you roll is determined by your equip load (if your burden ever exceeds 70%, you start to fat roll; at some point past 100%, you become unable to roll), and the invincibility frames you get during the roll are determined by the agility stat.

The game supports an auto-walk mode (Z to toggle) and an auto-dash mode (X to toggle), so you don't have to hold down Space Bar (to dash) or Alt (to walk) while moving, but I've never found them useful.

Note that there is a forced delay on all mouse button events which screws with the way the game is played. Every click will be delayed by about a half second, and modifiers are determined at the time the command is executed (so even if you hold down Ctrl and click the right mouse button to change your right-hand weapon, you have to keep holding Ctrl until the command to swap weapons executes—if you release Ctrl before this happens, the game will treat it as a normal right click, which will perform a right-hand attack by default). Principally, this will make it difficult to use a shield in close combat (the response is just too slow to be able to raise your shield in time to block an enemy's blow—you have to disengage and wait until you have enough time to account for the delay). Also note that jumping attacks and guard break maneuvers are nearly impossible to perform using the mouse; you can do it with the keyboard alone, but it's not terribly effective and the window for performing these moves is really small (I have to use both hands, one for the W key and one for G or H, to be able to do them even semi-reliably).

It's just a real pain to use; I truly can't imagine what they were thinking. If all else fails, you can try some macros with third-party software that will override the mouse control (search on the Steam forums for Dark Souls II for details).

And you can make your face look pretty by using a human effigy. Note that every time you die, you hollow a little more and lose a percentage of your maximum HP (down to 50%). You can restore your humanity with a human effigy, which returns you to human appearance and restores your maximum HP. There's not much difference between hollow and human states, though you can't summon people to aid you while hollow (you can still get invaded, however).

No. There's nothing in the first game you need to be able to play this one.

There's some context and nuance for some of the lore that you probably won't pick up on without being familiar with the first game, but nothing that will prevent you from understanding what's happening (and it's not a traditional narrative, so there's not much to follow along with anyway).

I can still use the proper equivalent of XBOX buttons on keyboard, like A = Enter...

You can only ever have a single bloodstain. If you're on the way to recover your lost souls (to the point where you last died) and you die again, the first bloodstain is lost forever and a new one is created with whatever souls you had in your possession before this new death.

In general, you don't want to use your soul items until you're ready to spend them. They'll stay safe in your inventory forever, so there's no harm in just holding them in reserve until you go to level up or find a merchant or trainer with items or spells you want to buy. And if you ever find yourself with a lot of souls heading into unfamiliar territory, you may want to return to town and spend some of them before venturing further.

Not really.

Dark Souls 2 takes place so far in the future from Dark Souls 1 that all plot elements from 1 passed into vague legend.

Also DS 2 is easier, so it depends. I'd say get both. But if you only buy DS 2 then watch the Prepare to Cry series on Youtube, that should catch you up on the plot of 1.

Well.

Unfortunately game is much more weaker than DkS1. And this includes design of the bosses, design of the level, mobs actions and their locations. No death punishments, for example Balder Knight with Rapier will kill you by riposte, Hollow soldier with Estoc will parry you but will not finish you off.

Map design. Too linear, in some places you can see another locations. Like a corridor in the sky when you arrive to Bastille from No man's warf. So places like Iron Keep too complex, they do not add challenge to the area, but instead they add frustration. Sen's Fortress is fun, Anor Londo is fun - Iron Keep is boring. You can have 60 poison arrows in your first playthrough and these arrows will make Iron Keep run a cake walk. So why all that mess there in the first place?

Bosses are so easy and this is so sad. I begin this game in Covenant of Champions and made it to NG++ in this Covenant without any problems at all. As a matter of fact - fighting bosses alone is much more easier than fight them with NPC or another player or players, because you can predict the behavior of any boss easier. The only two fight i can actually name as more or less challenging: Double Pursuers - which you can fight one at the time if you want to, and DarkLurker which is ok but... yeah too simple even on NG+5.

Smelter Demon - this boss is harmless, Freja? Harmless. Rotten? Harmless. Sinner.. well in NG+ she is kinda tricky because of two red phantoms, but.. yeah. Ancient Dragon - worst design ever, this boss is pathetically easy, but if you are slow for any reason - he will one shot you. As i said - bad design.

Mobs can track your movement or your aim, but most of the time it won't help them, because you can make a lot of mistakes and game will forgive you.

Hit boxes of certain bosses are very badly made. Last Giant and Ancient Dragon are examples of this.

Arsenal. In DkS1 you could do well in both pvp and pve with any kind of weapon in your disposal, short sword could be just as deadly as a halberd of the black knight. In DkS2 only few weapons are viable, unless you are some kind of enthusiast.

Souls Memory. Yeah...

Covenants. Well SunBros are ok, because you can't actually somehow ruin it. The other covenants... Well some of them add some additional content. Covenant of Champions is rather sad, because it brings nothing new to the game, Bells, Rats, Blue and Reds... well first two are pvp-wanna-be covenants. Arenas for Blue and Red is a bad decision in general.

Pvp. With some many things broken in the game - like speed of estus, poise and dark magic, with the same crappy net code? well it's actually a shameful display. Although after SM 16m, i had some decent pvp as invader and as target for invasions. Honourable duels, almost just as good as in DkS1.

Lore. Well Lore aspect of the game is immense. If you are in for DkS lore - this game brings a lot of thing to think about. Lore is made very well indeed.

Grind, be it materials for upgrades or sets of armor - you must grind a lot. For example for Auros Set i killed 20 phantoms and as result 20 bosses of that area. Sad.

In general DkS2 is a good game, best game of this year so far. Well it's made for broader audience and this actually made game worse. It's too user friendly, too forgiving. Backtracking in some cases is too short. Ability to clean the area of mobs actually did more ill than good. Bosses are too easy, environment and mobs too simple.

p.s. and controls for pc version is horrible.

p.p.s. if you are a veteran of Souls games - you already know all the flaws of DkS2... shame really.

At least with Freja, I fully agree. Killing off the spiders, waiting for the laser attack, slash away, and repeat is really all there is. Rotten can be harder to dodge, but not awfully complicated. Smelter Demon is harmless? o.O Sinner NG+ will give you a run for your money, took me a veeeery long time.

Bosses still offer challenge, but it doesn't feel quite on the same page as DS1. The strategies required don't feel as demanding as O&S, Kalameet, Artorias, Sanctuary Guardian, etc.

Map design. Too linear, in some places you can see another locations.

Eh, certain spots in the original(i.e. Undead Burg) could be chocked up to the same thing.

Simple as it can be.

Then you've gotten way too good at video games. :P

In the case of Freja you need to kill only one spider on the far right. Because he will chase you. The rest of them will not catch you because of the legs of Freja, given that you kill Freja in less than 2 minutes by facetanking her and rolling through chelicerae - she is easy as it can be. Funny enough on NG+ you can kill her in less than 40 seconds on the cliff by the same rolling through her chelicerae attack move. You just need to approach her by rolls(it saves time, and you don't have much of it during this event) and dodge leg attack.

Rotten is easy as well, you just need to cut his arm off which can be done in the first 20 seconds.

Smelter Demon is the easy boss, because with the 'strike' weapon and lighting bonus damage, you kill that guy in less than 2 minutes on NG and in 40 seconds in NG+. You just need to roll through his right side for the win.

Sinner with adds. Well when you light the oil, you can aim on adds with avelyn. Anyway first add will die in the moment when he jumps down, the second one won't live much longer. If you have problems you can always summon Lucatiel to tank the Sinner while you deal with adds. Simple as it can be.

There is no actually challenging bosses in DkS2, sadly enough even double Pursuers are not very fun, even if you fight them fair, two at the time. Each of them are dying from 5 strikes from lighting 'strike weapon'.

Darklurker can be fun, because you need to run a lot. But, you can cancel his split and you deal double damage on this boss if you damage both of them with one attack. You just need to bait melee attack on both of them.

Some Lion Warriors are harder than some bosses really.

p.s. speaking of O'n'S, Kalameet, Artorias, Sanctuary Guardian and even Manus - yes i was hoping to see more of these bosses. More challenge, more overcoming the difficulties. But... yeah. We have what we have.

Undead Burg as area... well. you know it have some fun parts and some challenge if you want it. Like Black Knights and rolling flaming barrel of doom. Also arrow in the back when you fight the Demon on the bridge is kinda fun. Again you can battle a drake if want it, and this guy can kill you with his torrent of flame. It force you to be quick. Also the armored boar? I never fought it actually, i was using skulls to lure him in the fire. More options how to deal with the encounter.

Again - a corridor to Royal Aegis Velstadt? not the best encounter in terms of options avaliable for you. You can deal with guards without taking damage, be it backstabd or poison. But you know, if you played Demon Souls - there is the almost the same gauntlet, but you have more option in order to pass the area.

Honestly i wanted more from the game... i am still playing it. I want to reach a cap of scaling, i don't remember but i guess it's +9. Maybe i will make Catarina Knight theme build later on, or Royal Swordsman themed build or Heide Knight.

Will see.

Who doesn't love a good arrow in the back?

For the Undead Parish version, it's easier just to run past anyhow. In Duke's, I lured them between the bonfire and a pillar, and just starting slashing away :P Not the smartest animals.

Well, the 2 games are both satisfying, but are definitely taking different directions(and I'll always prefer the first). I'll admit the second doesn't have the same focus on open-world, and the wildly different environments feel less like you're in a small part of a much larger world. Let's hope the rumored Project Beast avoids that a bit.

I lured the first boar in Undead Parish to the stairs and into the fire, then as he turned I slashed him in the rump, got his helmet in a drop. The boar (s), forget there might be 2, in Duke's Archives I fought head on and slashed them with my axe and my Chaos Fireballs.

So now that the patch is out and people have been doing testing the general consensus is:

Resonant Weapon is now completely worthless. Now does barely ~1% more damage than Dark Weapon.

Great Resonant soul does marginally more damage than Dark Orb.

Flame Weapon... TO THE GROUND

Questions!

Should I buy an Armor or a Shield for my Cleric first? Can my Cleric use a big shield (2000xp one)?
