It's Always Sunny in Astora... Super Meat Boy! Haha, Honest Trailers never disappoint. And it's funny how I always compared Dark Souls with SMB...
Anyway, I was wondering if I should pick Dark Souls II, how is it compared to the first one?
It's harder, though like I said before, not entirely for good reasons. More weapons and viable weapon classes, as well as better boss weapons overall, but there's more copy-pasted movesets. Easily the best upgrading system in the series (but no more purchasable Twinkling Titanite, unfortunately). Bonfire Ascetics add a new interesting mechanic, and also allow you to farm like you've never farmed before (good thing? probably not).
Magic in general is more interesting than it has ever been, and this time Sorcerer is actually really shitty in the beginning. Pyromancy has to be earned, and this time benefits from scaling beyond upgrading your Pyromancy flame. Hexes are cool, and powerful, but not like they were pre-patch.
Levels on average are shorter, with more bonfires dotted about. On the other hand, less backtracking and walking everywhere because you can teleport from the very beginning of the game. Progression towards the end of the game gets weird, but at the same time it doesn't suffer from such a sharp drop-off in quality like post-Anor Dark Souls.
The DLCs are pretty good. When I finished them all I had a pretty clear favorite, but when I later went online I found opinions pretty split on which is the best one, so that's pretty subjective. All of them without a doubt have some pretty badass items.
PvP is... I dunno, not great. I think on paper it should be a lot better than Dark Souls 1 (no more backstab souls, dead angling bs etc.) but it gets killed by terrible lag problems and FROM's chronic hatred of anything that's not a katana. SM is a mixed bag. I've definitely found less "twinks" because of it, but at the same time it mostly killed of lower-level invasions. Non-NPC invasions are themselves kind of rare on base NG. On the other hand, there's plenty of jolly co-operation to be had if you progress normally.
Overall, I think it's more than "worthy" of a successor. Like every game in the Souls series, it's fantastic, albeit with some glaring flaws.
