Wow I've only played Demon Souls but that Rotten boss is just too crazy and weird to pass up getting Dark Souls 2... kinda just thinking sequelitis and all that.
I guess maybe Bloodborne will be where it truly jumps the shark.

Slightly? Considerably easier is more like.
However with BB looming over horizon i don't think DkS2 is worthy of buying. At least not now. Wait for a full package.

You're probably right on waiting for a full package, though. A GOTY edition with all the DLC for cheap would be worth waiting on.

Passing all those poison-shooting statues is a bad pain in the neck itself.

you just pick a weapon with a huge hit box - like a club which you may find earlier and clear your way through.
and i fn HATE when i get summoned to a world where master can't even provide clear passage. Those people deserve to be killed through invasion.

I think there is more than 30 of those statues...
There is spineless monsters on the way too which you need to kill (10 times). Also the Rotten has already bashed me two times easily. I need more training to defeat it.

I wouldn't have thought they could come up with a worse boss battle than Bed of Chaos, but I think Undead Purgatory is a definite candidate.

There's no competition, the Bed of Chaos is the worst boss fight hands down. It's just completely cheap throughout the entire fight, not to mention poorly designed visually and in terms of the how the fight plays out. It should come to no surprise that both Lost Izalith and the boss were actually rushed in development.
The Executioner's Chariot wasn't anything special but it wasn't bad. Skeleton Lords were just boring.
The only boss that I think could be compared it the dragon boss but thank God it's optional. That's another example of a cheap boss battle, they give the dragon tons of health and then a singular attack that can one hit kill you that he regularly performs.

Still, makes me feel a bit better about not being able to buy Bloodborne....but not much. ![]()
On the topic of weak boss fights, I gotta say, I really wasn't a fan of Dark Souls II's mob boss fights. Skeleton Lords, that Rat Plague, the Tseldora encounter, etc. At least as a dual wielding/twin blade focused warrior, I feel like I slice through all my enemies like butter.
Bed of Chaos really was some bad design through and through. It usually takes me about two deaths to clear that boss. One for the left path, one for the right path, and one to go for the middle. No new tactic/attack pattern to learn to mitigate. I think the Artorias dlc made up for it a great deal though.

When I wrote that, I had done the Executioner battle about 25 times in a row, never getting past the skeletons who kept stunlocking me to death. On the attempt I made just before the post, I managed the timing of them for the first time, just barely surviving both sets. Then I waited for the regeneration ring, from nearly bottomed out health, because I wanted to conserve the Estes. I hadn't fought the actual horse, and I didn't know what to expect, yet.
I had just developed my magic some (I'm mainly a dex build) so I nervously kept my distance and hit him with spells. It was actually working, so I stayed with the tactic, dodging any magic or charges while slowly backing up. After 25 frustrating skeleton deaths, I wanted to try and finish him on the first try so I wouldn't have to suffer through the first half again.
I got him down to 1/4 health... and that was when I walked backwards off the edge of the giant gaping pit that somehow never interfered with his endless loops around the track! >8(
Then I made the post.
On New Game Plus I actually managed the tactic with the skeletons on the first try, and it only took a couple of times to beat him, but I was pretty mad the first time I fought him.

Speaking of hard boss fights...
THIS
WAS REALLY HARD
I changed spell and equipment configurations many times trying to sort out the way to do it, and I think I spent about 20 Effigies getting it done. Then, of course, I forgot to equip several items that I planned to for the boss battle, because that's what I do when I over-think things.

If that battle didn't come with Checkpoints based on which parts of "it" you killed, I might agree with you.I wouldn't have thought they could come up with a worse boss battle than Bed of Chaos...
It's missing the Host:This Party Sucks.

(Okay I couldn't find a thread for Dark Souls 1 so I'm just posting this here)
Anyway I'm thinking of perhaps buying Dark Souls so does anyone have any advice for a beginner? What's a good starting class, which areas to explore first, any combat tips, etc.

Anyway I'm thinking of perhaps buying Dark Souls so does anyone have any advice for a beginner? What's a good starting class, which areas to explore first, any combat tips, etc.
1) Start with the Knight or possibly the Warrior. The combat can take a little getting used to and the focus on defense is a little better at the start for a newbie.
2) The path at first is a little linear in terms of where you're supposed to go. After leaving the asylumn, if you find yourself in the New Londo Ruins or Cemetery, you're going the wrong way.
3) Take some time to get used to your weapon's move set. Outside of quick and strong attacks, the game doesn't really tell you all your move variations for each weapon. You have a unique sprint attack animation, roll attack animation, and step back attack animation.
Also, don't be afraid to make periodic trips back to the bonfires after clearing particularly difficult side areas. Explore *everything*. Dark Souls actually has phenomenal world-building, it's just that it makes you work to learn all the different aspects of the lore. And finally, while it might be tempting to heal immediately when your health is low. You have to wait for an opening so your enemy doesn't just one shot you while you're healing.
If you need any more tips, feel free to ask. And welcome to Dark Souls, hehehe....

Also, never ever put points in the Resistance stat, it's the most useless stat ever. Avoid at any cost.

This is important.
Resistance will be raised by other stats, anyway, and judicious use of equipment will do a fine job of mitigating anything the resistance stat helps you with.

I'm going to say Pyromancer. Improving the fire spells doesn't seem to be based off of a particular stat, but can be "bought" by someone in the game. Most of it's close-ranged, but can do some serious damage, especially among certain creature types. You can pretty much play as a melee-focused character and a pyromancer, as far as I've been able to tell. What's a good starting class, which areas to explore first, any combat tips, etc.
As far as general tips for survival:
- Be Cautious. Trying to Rush the Enemies Without Knowing them well could result in a quick trip back to a bonfire.
Learn their actions and when to attack. Think of it like Mike Tyson's Punch Out in Dark Fantasy Land. Your Shield is your best friend, as long as you've got the stamina for it. - On Character Creation, there's a list of "Gifts". Take the Master Key. You'll thank me later.
- If you need to choose between "Up" or "Down", choose Up.

- Switching to Two-Hand Style will greatly increase your damage - if you're behind a foe, or they're easily staggered, I'd suggest that route. Just remember to block their moves first.
- If you go the Mage Route, you get a set amount of spell attacks instead of mana, so I'd personally mix up Melee and Ranged... Unless it's a boss Battle, then I'd say just nuke away
This is especially true if you've got a phantom summoned to help out. - Don't be discouraged by death. Look at it as failing at a puzzle, and focus on solving it instead.
- No need to kill everything and its broodmother if you're backtracking around. You can run past just about anything if you know the place well enough.
Seconded. Dex, Vit, End, and Str are the big ones. Dex can come in veeeery handy if you get a certain weapon made in the game. Also, never ever put points in the Resistance stat, it's the most useless stat ever. Avoid at any cost.

Also just remembered: don't bother with trying to dual wield. While you do have the ability to wield a weapon in each hand, what few benefits there are will be vastly outweighed by a shield.
