Also just remembered: don't bother with trying to dual wield. While you do have the ability to wield a weapon in each hand, what few benefits there are will be vastly outweighed by a shield.

Yep. There's a select few bosses that you're better off with Full Dual, but for the average enemy I'd start out holding block. Not unless you're a rolling champion or something. :P

Out of curiosity, did you ever do a Dual WIeld Gold/Silver tracer run from Artorias of the Abyss? I thought the weapons were hella fun and did halfway decent damage.

The problem was the silver tracer didn't have a lot of viability unless you had a parry weapon/shield or were facing an enemy who could be backstabbed (b/c of the high crit rating).

It made me a sad panda b/c it was one of the few instances where I thought dual-wielding was semi-viable had they let you parry with the gold tracer.

Fraid I never tried, I usually stuck with Q's Firesword. Bloodborne's Blades of Mercy would likely be close to the tracers, but with Classic DS I just went with classic 1-handers. It's my Knight Simulator. ¯\(°_o)/¯

  • If you go the Mage Route, you get a set amount of spell attacks instead of mana, so I'd personally mix up Melee and Ranged... Unless it's a boss Battle, then I'd say just nuke away ^_^ This is especially true if you've got a phantom summoned to help out.

So if you have a set amount of spell attacks instead of having something like Mana regeneration does that mean you can get more by "buying" spell attacks like arrows?

You can spend the game's "currency" to buy arrows, but archery is considered separate from spells. You attune your spells at a bonfire, and each spell has stats for how many spell slots it requires, and how many times you can cast it before you have to rest at a bonfire to get them back (similar, in a sense, to what D&D used to do.)

If you have more than one copy of a spell, you can equip as many as you have available (assuming you have enough spell slots.) Each copy will allow you to cast the spell a fixed number of times, and they add together. Soul Arrow takes one slot and allows 30 castings (I think, my memory is a bit fuzzy on the first DS.) So if you had 3 slots and 3 copies of the spell, you could equip all of them and cast it 90 times, 2 of them to cast it 60 times, or just one, and then use the other slots for other spells that you have.

Especially powerful spells sometimes require 2 or 3 slots to equip.

Archery just combines a weapon in a hand slot with ammo in the arrows slot (or bolt slot for crossbows.) You can purchase arrows with souls, and carry up to 999 of any given type.

Oh, and archery will allow you cheese your way through a significant amount of the game. There are a number of encounters in both Dark Souls games that are ridiculously easy if you use archery to your advantage. There is very little in Dark Souls that cannot be safely defeated with arrows and patience.

So I just finished completing all the achievements for Dark Souls 2!

It's a always a little anti-climactic when your final achievements are achieved by buying spells, but they can't all coincide with watching a challenging boss' death animation.

Nice - Kicking the ass of a tough-ass game is something to be proud of, even if it ends with an Easter Egg-Bladed Broadsword Hunt.

Especially powerful spells sometimes require 2 or 3 slots to equip.

For good reason, I think - Back as a mage, taking down Ornstein with just 4 Soul Spears was surprising. o.O I'd expect Pyro may be easier.

*shudders remembering his first attempts at Smough and Ornstein*

Or vastly outweighed by two handing a heavy weapon.

Eventually when you learn how to roll at the right time or if you develop enough defence and poise, a shield isn't even necessary anymore, more so if you're two handing an ultra great weapon which has the ability to stun-lock or knock-down targets (including some bosses - Ornstein and Smough can be stun-locked with the R2 attack of the Zweihander in their first forms for example).

Thankfully dual wielding was improved in the sequel to the point where it's quite a decent build (I'm playing through it right now as a dual wielding warrior in fact).

Well, after about 6 hours, I completely regret purchasing the DLC for DS 2.

So I finally got dark souls 1!

I'm playing as a pyromaniac with the master key. So I went through the asylum thinking "hey this isn't too hard and even that boss wasn't too bad", feeling really smug about myself before being whisked away by some random giant crow. So I got to Lordran, went down some stairs, along a valley and got insta killed by some giant undead dragon. So I went the other way round and got killed by some ghosts I couldn't even hit back.

So I decided to not go down  the stairs and instead go to a graveyard where some helpful skeletons eased the burden of my head from my neck. So I went another way, killed some hollows and finally found another bonfire.

Anyway at the current moment I'm being killed by a giant minotaur on a bridge about 1.5 meters wide. Going to try and get him up onto the tower where I've got more space.

I'm "enjoying" the game so far but I am a bit annoyed that I spent a decent amount of time on the CC and I go through 99% of the game with no skin.

Depending on how things go, you'll gradually begin to build and collect Humanity. If you "use" one as an item, it restores you to human/full health.

In the original Dark Souls, humanity is extremely important. I might have a few details off, but from what I remember:

- It directly impacts your item discovery rate. Being human increases it, and the amount of Humanity you are carrying increases it further.

- It directly impacts your resistances. I believe it is specifically curse that is significantly boosted (I never found the curse mechanic all that dangerous, as I finished though NG+5 and was never cursed once in my play experience.)

During the early stages, you'll be at the mercy of fate, mostly, but as you get your "Dark Souls" legs under you, you'll build a surplus of what you need to keep your humanity.

Humanity also can affect who you can "see" and bring along for Bosses.
Spoiler

They're also useful for Factions - as a Pyromancer, getting a powerful AoE attack(as well as completing a character arc) requires a veritable crapload of humanity later in the game, should you join said covenant.

Anyway at the current moment I'm being killed by a giant minotaur on a bridge about 1.5 meters wide. Going to try and get him up onto the tower where I've got more space.

The tower helps. Run up it after the undead have been slain, let him get close to the tower, and leap down to get em' in the head. Proceed to bravely run away to the other side, or at least a good distance away. The simplest way to get him now is bait him into attacking, back up a little, then run up after his swing and stick him with the pointy end. Naturally, use whatever fireballs you have on him too, he'll likely be vulnerable to that.

So I got to Lordran, went down some stairs, along a valley and got insta killed by some giant undead dragon. So I went the other way round and got killed by some ghosts I couldn't even hit back.

Yeah, I'd save that area until after the first bell is rung. You'll likely want to head back there after a certain boss batturu.

After the bell, I'd highly reccomend heading into the "basement". You'll find a key for it early on so you'll know what I mean by that later. Said basement isn't *too* far from the key. For pyromancers, it's definitely in your interest to check it out for a certain NPC.

That's about as much as I can spoil :P
