In Video Games Games, SciFi I really don't like seeing overweight people. I'm not fat but I don't prefer seeing them. In reality it's different and normal seeing. Plus in SciFi there's technology and better standards of living with endless possibilities. In many other SciFi you hardly see over weight people. I think it under regulation too why they don;t add everything. That what I'm guessing.

Don't worry, unlike racism and sexism it's OK to discriminate against fat people.

I just assumed fat people were rare now because of gene therapy or whatever.

With all due respect, but being fact is actually something that is caused by a certain person. I think it's fair to judge people by their actions, not by what gender, color or race someone is. Being really fat, obese, is something that's pretty much your own doing.

Isn't that exactly the sort of thing someone would say to justify their discrimination? All those fat people must be gluttonous lazy slobs and it their weight couldn't possibly be a result of their biology which they can do nothing about,

In fact, for example, the number of fat cells you have is fixed at birth... So yeah, I don't think science agrees with you on that.

Other than overeating, eating the wrong food and lack of exercise, what are the causes of obesity?

How would the science of the future reduce obesity?

Genes. Also don't do diet food. they are worse than junk food. Also Diet Soda is worse than normal Soda due to a certain chemical. And some people do have food allergies. Also an underactive Thyorid glands can make a person overweight as well. There are a whole host of reasons for weight gain and making it hard for weight lost.

Obesity was rare (circus freak rare almost) 40 years ago, then all of a sudden everyone turned into a genetic couch potato with thyroid issues? I don't think so.

Right. On a serious note, we have very little actual data on obesity; the "obesity epidemic" is largely fabrication - we changed the criteria by which we classify people as obese, and failed to account for that in the reports.

In any case you are missing the availability of food (I wonder if there was some global event 50 years ago that led to food rationing...); today we (in the west anyway) have enough food to get fat, and some people do and some don't.

How would the science of the future reduce obesity?

Appetite/eating is controlled by hormones, energy expenditure (this is why diets don't work - if you are eating less the body adjusts by using less energy because it doesn't want to starve) is variable as well and could be targeted, etc.

No, you're partially wrong on this Alex. Obesity is indeed a growing problem in many western countries. Not only has the obesity rate drastically gone up, but the number of obesity-related illnesses has too. Never before has the number of diabetes type 2 patients been as high as now. At least in the US, this is largely due to fast food being cheaper, quicker and more easily available than healthy, organic food. Another reason is the shift towards a more sedentary lifestyle. According to the WHO, about 30% of the world's popualtion get insufficient physical exercise, as of 2009.

So yes, obesity has increased in recent times.

The real reason is that the developers wanted to use the same male and female model for all humans. The fictional reason is explained in the codex. Something about medicinal advances and the extinction of obesity, eye problems and such. That's why there are no people with glasses in the games.
