I accepted the reasoning that Guardian posted here. However it still doesn't sound that believable.



Maybe Sovereign was built by Microsoft and RRoD.

Imho, I do not think Sovereign is a machine in essence, but rather some sort of consciousness (a spirit or soul if you will). Upon seeing his pawn killed by Shepard, Sovereign literally possesses the corpse of Saren in an attempt to kill Shepard and open the relay himself. I believe in destroying Saren's reanimated body Shepard is actually killing Sovereign (who was still controlling the ship referred to as Sovereign remotely). When Sovereign is killed there is nothing/no one controlling the ship and it essentially shuts down and goes limp. Even before the Normandy takes the ship out I believe it was out for the count because Sovereign the being had been destroyed while possessing Saren's body.

Can we get an official reason to Soveriegn's shields going down after you destroy the mechanical leftover Saren? I can't imagine a huge ship/AI (beyond flesh and bone's ability to even comprehend) having so much power transferred to a bipedal machine.

I think Sovereign was running on Windows XP and Saren was running on Vista, so once Sov transfered his conscience into Saren, he ran out of memory to control himself as well (Sovereign only has 2 GB of Memory, he never upgraded). When the data uplink was lost, Sovereign's shields froze and he crashed to desktop.

Opening the main relay for the rest of the fleet was Sovereign's primary mission and he was relying on Saren to perform this task for him.  Once he re-animated saren and that avatar was killed all probability of him completing this mission was null and void.  

Many people have mentioned that Sovereign, as powerful as he was, couldn't survive against the whole fleet alone.  Perhaps he allowed himself to be destroyed on purpose.

1. Because it was now impossible for him to complete his mission

and

2. Although unlikely, it would be possible that the galactic races could use Sovereign to find the reaper fleet and destroy them in their sleep.

So to an AI that's thinking logically if the only possible outcomes of you still fighting are bad, it is better to allow yourself to be utterly destroyed.

(along those lines another theory is that instead of destroying himself utterly he simply 'wiped his system' ...notice how his body goes limp when his shields go down...it's almost as if he's lifeless before he's actually destroyed.  In other words, he cleared his memory and along with it all knowledge of where to find the sleeping reaper fleet)

I thought Sovereign's shield went down due to the Human fleet's continual bombardment. I played the game few times and this POV did not change.
