I wish that Garrus was the writer's pet. Then he could come up to my room announce and finally tell me about his family, his childhood, or atleast say whether or not his mom is still alive or not.  Hell, I'd been happy to at least have Legion either at the Citadel party or maybe leave something like Mordin did like his last recorded message with his previous owner or maybe his Fastasy Galaxy (or whatever it's called) character/mount.  Which character do you want more of?

None, ideally. Every writer would get a chance to have an LI stand out? Sylvia Feketekuty doing Liara, Walters and Garrus, Patrick Weekes and Jack, etc..

Of course, it's all collaboration, so I guess it wouldn't be as clear cut among writers. I think Citadel DLC shows though how equal attention looks. Every character had a spotlight there.

If you agree that there are 'writer's pets' then how is Garrus not one? He gets the same amount of content as Liara in ME1 & ME3, more than her in ME2, a huge amount of personal stuff between him and Shepard, and he doesn't even have the valid excuse of not being able to die. Apparently it only counts as a writer's pet if you don't personally like them.

If I had to pick and choose a character to be lavished with attention, I would want it to be Legion. It's telling just how great a character he is that he can be one of the most popular and influential characters in the series despite having hardly any screentime in ME2 or ME3.

Ideally you'd avoid situations where 99% of the cast could have been killed off by the player, forcing the the writers to give all the dialogue to the one character that is guaranteed to be alive.

I have no desire to see all the characters be equal for the purposes of being equal.

In fact, that sounds to me like a near-guarantee of low quality content.

I'd probably have to go with Traynor, cool attitude, clear thinker, and part from the expensive toothbrush, much less pretentious than Liara.

Do you think Citadel was low quality? That's what it managed to accomplish. At least the stuff besides the main mission section (the meetups, I mean).

And it's not simply for the sake of being equal, in so many terms. It's because tens of millions of people play these games. It's an accomplishment when you can get that many people to enjoy a setting/world/story like this one, but not all come to it in the same way. I think it's in their benefit to know the many ways people enjoy it, despite their efforts to push certain things.

Miranda.
Considering how bloated Cerberus' role became in ME3, it might have helped if the writers liked her character enough to come up with something more relevant to that than just giving her a rehash of her loyalty mission.

I wouldn't want any writer's pet. I think that any teammate that the player talks too often and show good responses to should be the one that gives the player more content. Ideally, the LI chosen should trump all.

If I have to choose a writer's pet, then Kaidan. I would like to know more about his past and family. I wouldn't have minded opening up to him about the dreams and so on.

I don't think that was a case of the writers not liking her, but the fans. After all, she was basically to ME2 what Liara was to ME3. Popularity is everything.

Pretty much this. Lot's of other games have this annoying problem as well.

I dont see how putting a certain character in the spotlight for the sole purpose of putting it in the spotlight is any better.

In fact, that sounds to me like a near-guarantee of low quality content.

Based on what?Bioware does this all the time.

Characters never have equal content in Bioware games. For example, Bioware always puts more romantic spotlight on at least one (female) character. Jaheira, Bastila, Dawn Star, Morrigan...and yes, Liara is "the one" in the Mass Effect series.

I never saw Morrigan as being more focused in game. In game, everything is pretty rewarding. The only time she gets more focus is marketing. And as far as that goes, who cares.

I gotta admit, I really liked that Liara had so much screentime when I had her as my LI. Otherwise though, it does become a little annoying at times. Like if you had an attachment to a character who isn't in your squad in ME3 you have to resort to brief appearances and short cameos, but Liara is always there. Always watching.

I like Liara, she's good character, she's just not my favorite character.  You can't deny she gets way more screen time and development than any character in the game and I don't count James because he was introduced outside of the games.

True, Garrus is one of the fan favorites but Garrus can die in ME2, he took a missle to the face and got a nasty scar, the stuff between Shepard and him are optional, you can only romance him if you took him along in ME1, and then asked to spar in ME2, and then not romance any character in ME3.  He had a minicomic in Mass Effect Homeworlds which also featured James, Tali, Liara(I think).

Liara got a full graphic novel to herself, she stars in her own DLC, she becomes the shadow broker, she can't die anywhere unless you download the extended cut and have low EMS, she finds the plans to the deus ex machina, even if you didn't buy the other two games you can still romance her out of the blue (although it maybe the same for VS idk I never bothered) her sex cutscene vs. the one with Garrus...hell Traynor got a better sex scene he did.

If she wasn't a writer's pet at very least she might have been the marketing pet but too be fair Garrus is the only other ME1 character you can't kill or screw over.(besides low ems) and he gets the best dialogue (imo) so he probably was atleast the second favorite.

Just want to thank you for the understanding and well rounded attitude. Sometimes it seems like more diehard Liara fans enjoy this position too much. It's just odd behavior to me. You never see people forcing others to eat specific flavors of ice cream or something.

The story was destined for plot holes, deus ex machina ending, catalyst MacGuffin narrative device before Mac Walters became lead writer.

Writer's pet? Liara wasn't the writer's pet in ME3. If she was she'd have not friend zoned you after committing.

Despite being able to die in the midway point of the trilogy, Garrus still pretty much qualifies for a writer's pet character to me, because he's pretty much the "bromance" character that gets a lot of lines, and probably has the best meetup scenes in the game (both the shooting scene and the tango scene for romanced femShep).

If I had to point to a character that I wish was given better attention, I would have to say the VS. The VS has such a long history with Shepard, and I feel that both kind of get the short end of the stick (more so Ashley). I'm a Liara fan, so obviously the amount of screen time she gets is met with approval, but the VS is arguably more developed, given how much you get out of the both of them in ME1.
