Who do you wish was the writer's pet instead of Liara?

Garrus isn't the writers pet. The writers like him and he's consistent, but he can be killed or not recruited.
I mean, come on. Liara got her own DLC. Albeit, the best DLC in the series. But srsly. She got her OWN DLC, lulz.
I like Liara tho. But she can be annoying, but she's alright.

Think about what they put the Commander through! If you count the brief scene of dramatic uncertanity at the end of ME1, Shepard dies at least three times. For some playthroughs, possibly in just two games.
What's the opposite of plot armor?

Miranda.
Considering how bloated Cerberus' role became in ME3, it might have helped if the writers liked her character enough to come up with something more relevant to that than just giving her a rehash of her loyalty mission.
This. Ideally, though, none of them would be.

Exactly this. More attention and stage-time for others would have been appreciated.
Although the only writer's pet that desperately needed its 'pet'-status revoked is the Catalyst, if anything.

Ideally you'd avoid situations where 99% of the cast could have been killed off by the player, forcing the the writers to give all the dialogue to the one character that is guaranteed to be alive.
Not entirely unfounded, true.
Here's to hoping there's better handling of that in the future...

If you agree that there are 'writer's pets' then how is Garrus not one? He gets the same amount of content as Liara in ME1 & ME3, more than her in ME2, a huge amount of personal stuff between him and Shepard, and he doesn't even have the valid excuse of not being able to die. Apparently it only counts as a writer's pet if you don't personally like them.
Bingo!
When people were complaining that Liara got too much dialogue in ME3 compared to their particular favorite LI, few complained that Garrus got just as much because most people went along with the 'canon bro' routine.
Anyway, who do I wish was the writer's pet?
Anyone or anything but Cerberus. Cerberus would be my choice for the biggest writer's pet of the series.

I think a fair number of people offer criticisms of Garrus. That thread in general discussion section is still going (Why is Garrus so loved?), and those issues get raised there.
I don't even understand the "canon bro" thing. It came out of the blue. Maybe he was a "canon bro" for the subculture here at BSN, but as a lone player, I never saw it before. He was almost on the shy side in ME1 and barely had any dialogue in 2. Suddenly he's talking a lot in 3 and my "bro". I had one playthrough where he was killed in the suicide mission. The ship feels empty without him, but I almost prefer it. Not even Varric in DA2 was railroaded as this much of a "bro". And he's the "bro" to end all bro characters.

As a solo player he was clearly "canon bro" as of ME2, when they more or less reworked his entire personality into the snarky, understanding, "good ol' days" sidekick.

I got a little of that, but it was no different than Tali. A certain familiarity of just being part of the previous group. He didn't talk much though. There wasn't much content. As far as my "sniper bros" go, it was more interesting listening to Thane or Zaeed. They had plenty to say.

Never found Liara to be a "writers pet" either. I can't remember any point in the trilogy where she was creepy and/or a stalker either as I've seen mentioned on the forum many times.

While I don't want any writer's pets, I agree that the VS needed more focus: They were in all of the games too, but they fall off the face of the galaxy for two games. Miranda could have used a tiny bit more screentime, maybe you catch her in the middle of something, rather then her contacting you. If Mordin survived the genophage, we could have used more from him.
In the Citadel DLC, Legion needed at least some kind of mention.
Garrus, while I agree he was given more time than most, it wasn't all bad because you could avoid it if you wanted to. With Liara, it's her popping in, having the run of my ship, and the worst thing I can say to her is 'get to the point.' She cried and cried about the asari, and made that awful crack about getting the Alliance (who's planet has been Reaperized for months now) should spring for air support instead. Never get the chance to even criticize her.

Certainly deserved more screentime at least. Fun character. Or rather, fun "vehicle" for things I'd like to see more of.

Instead, I'd propose in the future they breakdown the load-bearing characters across the cast. 'Liara, Prothean Expert' and 'Liara, Intel Broker' could comfortably be broken into two characters who work together to cover 'Liara, Friend in the Cabin.'
In some alternate universe in which, say, Miranda is a unkillable companion who takes over the Shadow Broker network, ME3 could work as 'Miranda and Liara combine strengths to further Crucible', with Miranda appearing in one scene in the role as XO (comes for business, stays for concern), while Liara appears in another in general concern.
Past plot-importance, what makes a character a writer's pet is more subjective. I'm just fine without a canon-friend reoccuring character who gets defined by being the bromance, so legacy characters like Garrus and Tali in ME2 could happily be moved aside to bring forth new, interesting characters.

I have no desire to see all the characters be equal for the purposes of being equal.
In fact, that sounds to me like a near-guarantee of low quality content.
Do you think Citadel was low quality? That's what it managed to accomplish. At least the stuff besides the main mission section (the meetups, I mean).
And it's not simply for the sake of being equal, in so many terms. It's because tens of millions of people play these games. It's an accomplishment when you can get that many people to enjoy a setting/world/story like this one, but not all come to it in the same way. I think it's in their benefit to know the many ways people enjoy it, despite their efforts to push certain things.
Citadel presents a one or two minute meeting for each squadmate. How well you it work if the developers attempted to give each squadmate a mission lasting several hours and with very heavy development such as LotSB just because Liara gets one?
