Is there any point in talking to the crew?

I am doing another run through ME1 in order to set up a Shepard for ME2 and ME3. I really don't like ME1 and I want to blow through it as fast as possible, only doing quests that have some impact on later games, such as the Cerberus stuff, the Geth incursion stuff, Conrad Verner, etc. I am not going to do any side quests that do not impact later games. (And no, the matriarch's writings don't count as impacting later games. :P)

To speed up things up further I am thinking about just not talking to any of the crew except my romantic interest. As far as I have been able to tell this should not have any impact on later games. For instance, I am pretty sure Shepard can give Tali the Geth data without ever talking to her about it before hand. I do know for certain that Shepard can give Wrex his family armor without first talking to him about it. (And even that is not necessary if you have enough charm/intimidate points.)

I did, however, want to check that my assumptions about the unimportance of ship board conversations are correct.

Shipboard conversations in ME1 only serve to further a romance or get codex entries. The codex entries are not all that important as they do not give you XP and you are not really concerned about XP from what I can tell (as long as you get to level 50+?).

The only exception is Garrus' unique quest which can only be unlocked on his third conversation. But this does not really carry over to ME2.

Conrad Verner is somewhat of an exception in that if he is alive after ME1 (you charmed/intimidated him after your third conversation), then you can get a store discount in ME2: talk to Verner to learn about the Asari, go to that Asari and use Charm/Intimidate and get a store discount.

As for the Asari writings, from what i can tell you know of their impact on ME3 and do not care; understandable considering they do not really add all that much to ME3 (an extra 4 War Assets when combined with Elkoss Combine License and completing Gavin Hossle's quest in ME1).

Your conversation choices with Garrus can alter one line of dialogue in ME2...

Yeah, that is why I am going to just skip the Saleon quest. Just not worth the time. Garrus will get to kill Sidonis no matter what. He always does. I have never saved Sidonis.

Edit: You know I did notice one convo option in ME2 that carriers over to ME3 that you never would have thought had mattered. On your first meeting with Miranda if you inquire about how she would have done things differently and she mentions the control chip, then when you meet on the Citadel Shep will say she mentioned it before. If you skip that investigate option he won't have that line.

Got me thinking that maybe every single line in the game is flagged. Is that true?

I don't think everything is flagged.

For Garrus in ME1 it counts the "renegade" and "paragon" options you take with him when you are talking about how to handle situations. It assumes renegade pushes him more toward the Spectres and paragon more toward C-Sec... hence his lines about what he did before ME2 change depending on the score.

Otherwise I do not think most lines are flagged. They flag a few key things that they think they might use in the future game. Some things get used and some do not.
