GameRant's review of "Beyond: Two Souls"

GameRant gave it 4.5/5:

As a whole, though, Beyond: Two Souls is without question one of the most ambitious undertakings of this generation – an interactive experience with a massive scope, tremendous mo-cap performances, and a story that, while a little convoluted in places, competently encompasses several decades of a girl’s very complex life. Controlling Jodie and Aiden makes for a unique combination of mechanics and puzzle-solving, but the limitations of what the player can and can’t do will feel restrictive to some. However, those who embrace the experience will find that everything has a purpose in the end, and that Jodie’s journey is a satisfying one.

Whenever I mention David Cage, I'm usually met with a choir reciting how awful of a writer he is and how overrated Heavy Rain was.

From what I've been seeing everyhwere,  it's not only a movie... it's a bad one.

I'm watching it on YouTube, and it's basically the typical PS3 exclusive interactive movie that has become oh so popular. However, the graphics are amazing and the gameplay seems reasonably fun, though limited.

oooh. I'm loving this game! I specially liked the birthday party. I wanted revenge! And I got that.

I've been watching it. I would put it down as an 8 out of 10. The storyline doesn't really hold the same intrigue to me as heavy rain did, and is slightly less nonsensical than Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy. Graphics are slick as hell, though, and lives up to the developer's standards for realism. But yeah, the writing comes off more as Pseudo-Realistic like a 70's or 80's sci-fi/horror movie. To its credit, the Aiden sections do spice things up a bit in a voyeuristic way, even if it's usually just "Hold the button to knock something around". It's more fun to watch than play - the endings aren't as complicated to earn as Heavy Rain's as far as I can tell.

I'm really having trouble grasping why this game is getting slammed by some critics. It is currently 74/100 on metacritic. Heavy Rain scored better yet I find this game to be an improvement over Heavy Rain in almost every way.

Maybe it is because they found the Paranormal arc of the game off putting? The disjointed way in which it tells its story? I don't know, but it really doesn't deserve the flak it is receiving, it is a damn good story. I put it above the Walking Dead and Heavy rain but still below The Last of Us.

One point of criticism however is the characterization. The game tells a good narrative but fails to introduce many compelling or notable characters. At the most you'll only have feels for Jodie and maybe Nathan as they are the only characters who are truly fleshed out.

The party mission, lol. I was tempted to burn them all, ****ing ****s. Haha.

I did burn them all. I went full Carrie on their asses. I lit the house on fire, turned the gas on and stabbed the blond haired guy with a kitchen knife. I also Shattered A window and impaled a girl with Glass.

The game stopped me before I could actually kill them unfortunately.

I don't think you can actually kill them. But you can really beat the **** out of them if you so choose.

I don't think it has any real effect on the outcome. It isn't like Jodie want's you to go that far, she tells you to stop and you can ignore her if you so choose.

Edit: ah geez, i'm dumb. I just realized you haven't played the game and i'm spoiling things, I'm sorry. :(

PSN does have a demo for the interested.

Beautiful game and what I saw of the story interested me. But the controls of the game just made me angry. Especially with the fighting. I like to feel I'm in control, not that I have to hit random things on my controller that mimic the action the game is already doing.

Despite my earlier reservations on this thread, I'd probably get the full game if it wasn't for that.

I did the CIA combat training sequence in the demo. It was the part that angered/frustrated me most.
