The forum looks well organized, and I was hoping to find some help here. I am attempting to run the NWN2 toolset within the Vista o/s. Considering all the issues NWN2 toolkit appears to have with Vista, I may opt for pulling out an old XP machine. I have d/l'd the DX file, uninstalled/reinstalled numerous times, deleted the DX file from a copy of the DVD to the hard drive (a MS suggested fix), and am basically at my whits' end. The game will play but I have yet access the toolkit. Upon installation I am getting the ERROR_DX_INSTALL error. From what I am reading on the net, I get the sneaking suspicion that this is simply a first in a long line of OMG WILL THIS THING EVER WORK set of incompatibility issues.
Any assistance or guidance would be greatly appreciated. I have not attempted to replay a saved game because I am stuck in an endless loop of re/installing the game.

is your vista 32bit or 64 bit? 32 is much kinder as the toolset was designed in a 32 bit XP environment.
try running the toolset in compatibility mode as administrator.
i remember in XP that the .Net had to be version 3.5
DirectX needs to be version 9 - and if you have 10 there is no need to remove it as DX 10 does not interfere with previous versions
also in a semi-related issue certain very new graphics cards driver updates mess up the graphics but that is mostly for game play - but the toolset is also effected in kind to a reportedly lesser degree.
i run win7 in 32 bit and i did not have to lift a finger beyond installing (FYI)
if these things dont help
post back any changes in the error message(s)

er - ahem - are you installing the platinum or from disk?
platinum = no worry
disk = did you fully patch the game?

Also, if you have the DVD version of the game, then the version of DirectX you need to open the editor is provided on the first install disc. I run on Vista 32-bit myself here, and I have the disc version (NWN2 Platinum), and once I had the specific DirectX and .NET stuff, it worked fine.

I thank both of you for responding so quickly. The situation puts me into bit of a quagmire because my goals are to write a textbook on game design. Something along the lines of "Quests: Design, Theory, and History in Games and Narratives" by Jeff Howard. Considering a book is 3-6 years in the making, technology will bypass usefulness of most books by the time they hit press.
How usable will the NWN2 toolset be with the next O/S change is in the hands of not only its user base, but Microsoft's willingness to find work arounds in their next released O/S. In the past I have worked with powerful compilers that still require tweaking on the assembler level, and as Microsoft continues to tweak their O/S this will become even more necessary.
From what you are both telling me, you have found ways to make the toolset work within the vista O/S, but I have a few questions.
1. Using the toolset as administrator and 32-bit version. Since I am unfamiliar with what would these to actions require me to do specifically, I ask for clarification. Does this simply mean that I run the program as administrator, and install the program in the 32-bit folder (could it be this easy!).
2. I have the Gold version of NWN2 on DVD which has the DirectX files on it. These are not sufficient for a clean install. Within the Microsoft forums it is suggested I copy the disc to my harddrive and remove the DriectX file folder and TADA, things will work (did not work due to the logic of the installation sequence).
Again, any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Well, it wasn't such a trial as "finding a way to make it work" for me, it was just a matter of installing the included DirectX library.
1. I have the Vista security system disabled, so everything I do is "as administrator", and I'm not entirely sure what other people have to do to make it happen, except possibly right-clicking the program and selecting "run as administrator".
2. I don't understand what you mean here, or how copying the files to the hard drive will help anything, but I don't have the gold version. Did you update to the latest version of the game before trying to run the toolset?

Response to:
1. How do I disable the vista security options.
2. If you do a google search on "String ERROR_DX_INSTALL was not found in string table," it should direct you to the Microsoft answer forum where 3 options are suggested: A. download the DirectX file from their site (did not work, uninstalled NW2, then reinstalled NWN2 after the MS update); B. copy the disc(s) to your harddrive, make sure you have removed the DirectX File from the installer routine, and run the install from the harddrive (that was another crash and burn suggestion). The program requested that disc 2 be inserted, so I directed the program to the DVD disk (that has the DirectX files). At that point the program again bogged down searching for the directX file. C. The third option was to install the program in a clean boot state.
As for the latest update version of the game, there was an automatic 'update' window that did pop up that notified me that all but two files of the updates were successful (version 1.17). Upon hitting that option again (just in case anything was missed), this updater stated that all updates were as current as it gets. Again the toolset would not open.
Another site suggested that I load the program on a different location vs. the default folder. I chose C:\\NeverwinterNights. This work around was unsuccessful.
UPDATE: I believe the fix was a simple case of running the program as administrator.
I kept seeing the DX error message and assumed that was the issue.

the final patch install of NWN2 is 1.23 - is that what you have?
also the final patch(update) allows that no CD be required.
if your project is worth a 20$ investment - go to gog.com and get the neverwinter nights platinum edition - it has the absolute final version of the game and its expansions - there are three of them: Mask of the Betrayer, Storm of Sehir, and Mysteries of Wesatgate 0 MoW does not really contribute to toolset content as most of its custom stuff isnt made available (i could be wrong on that one thing however)

install the directx version from the discs or download 9.29c from june 2010. you also have to install framework .net - on vista this should work with either versions 3.5 or 4. update your game and everything should work. last resort should be to enable compatability mode and start the toolset as an admin.
no other mumbo jumbo is needed.

Thank you all for your help and hand holding. It is embarrassing to report that this was a simple case of user error, I did not run the game as administrator. All the necessary updates, DirectX and .NET files were installed. It is the simple things that trip me. What moved me into the direction of constantly searching for an answer, and installing/uninstalling the program was the DirectX error message which appears to be in error. With the help of the community, I have been able to check that the files are in the right places. The problem is that the installation program is not recognizing them, but the game and the toolset appear to be working fine upon initial testing.
The included update program appears to have updated to the 1.23.1765 English Version. The Update Program Version is 1.17.

When you finish that book you're working on, please let us know -- especially if it focuses on quests, as your association with the other book suggested.
The custom content from MoW is available on the Vault, but it's not necessary to buy MoW to use it.Morbane wrote...

Typically, a book from start to finish is 3-6 years. Will the newest Windows O/S render it useless before it goes to press is my biggest concern about using the NWN2 toolset. .

are you writing specifically about nwn2's toolset, or is your book about game design, especially quest design, in theory? if the latter is the case then time shouldn't be that important. i just wonder because i can't imagine that there's a market for nwn2 books out there ;D
also are you a student or an ex-developer or how does it come that you think you're ready to write a book?

I am with semper on this. If your book is generic then it will be of value to anyone in any toolset, time should not be such an issue. I believe the community will be here in three years time but you will have a very small target audience.
You could release in chapters or pamphlets on specific areas of game design?
