Tell me. Are armor and weapons going to be over the top?

There does seem to be a trend in modern games to make armor and weapons completely unrealistic, perhaps that is because the modern gamer needs to feel "invincible"? Is that true for you?  Do you need an axe that is three times too large to feel "cool"?  Do you need a two handed sword that is taller than you are to feel "tough"?  Is it more important for you to have armor that is totally over the top, or are you the kind that has a little respect for realism?

Perhaps realism is just something that falls by the wayside where RPG games are concerned.

I am curious, just wondering.

I prefer believability to realism, myself. In most forms.

Yes.

Your shoulder pads will be the size of a canoe.

Your armor will be spikier than a porcupine.

You will have a piece of battleship plating nicknamed "shield."

Your sword could be melted down to make one and a half Abrams tanks.

Just hitting the ground with it will result in lava exploding everywhere.

Dragon Age: Inquisition. Darker. Sexier. Better.

I myself prefer a more fantasy/unrealistic combat. It entertains me far more than realistic combat which I find to be boring and dull. Sort of like watching paint dry. That being said, Dragon Age Inquisition seems to be riding a healthy medium between the two which I think is perfect.

If you are looking for realistic combat you best look elsewhere though, this series has never had it.

One of the things I really didn't like about DA2 was the anime style fight.

SUPER SWORD OF INVICIBILITY 1080 DEGREES OF POWER KAMEHAMEHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

*little piece of metal makes a big hole on the ground*

I was a little disappointed when I saw the demo at pax, "the big power sword returns", but it is something I can overlook.

So yeah, I prefer realism than over the top things...

You don't watch anime then.  Anyone who does would realize how silly the comparison is. DA2 doesn't  even come close.

I do watch anime sometimes.

What I mean is the over the top moves they make. Hawke could make acrobatic olimpics with that big sword with just one hand.

DAO and DA2 are equally silly. DA2 might involve a lot of flipping, but DAO's animations for two-handers make you look like Babe Ruth stepping up to bat.

I sure hope not. I prefer realism all the way. Watching poor refuge Hawke walz around in omg superspiky hotrod armor completely breaks the immersion for me. Poor people, even THE hero, should wear what is possible with that income. Plus the exaggerated armors usually would get you killed in real combat.

"Over the top" is such a subjective term.

Plate armor - less bulky, no spikes, not alien
Chain mail - no spiked gauntlet, the armor is chain mailed and not half chain and half plate
Leather armor - it made of leather and not something else, not a ninja costume, and not power rangers
All armors - they are armors, they supposed to protect the body

I don't mind a fancy looking armor but not too exaggerate...DA2 have some nice models, ignore the Champion armor and the outer space armor, the rest are okay

The Roman-Greek looking light armor is nice

I hope armour and weapons are location specific and come in a variety of colours, there's nothing more odd than seeing someone from, say, Orlais dressed in Fereldan clothing/armour.

Keep reality out of fantasy games.

I share your viewpoints, but I found the Champion armor looked great for warriors and mages...especially on a male hawke.

Am I the only one who liked the Champion armor in DA2?

Edit: Apparently not. That being said I rather liked the rogue version, as well.

The only champion armor worth to wear was rogue armor. Minus gloves and shoes.

The champion armour isn't bad in itself, but doesn't fit with the rest of the game, or with the sort of aesthetic I think fits Dragon Age.

The armour we've seen associated with DA:I hasn't been too bad. The swords just look like standard oversized DA swords

It wouldn't be fantasy without shoulderpads that exceed the GDP of a small nation.

Yes, Gatsu's sword will feel small in comparison

I would rather have the weapons of a believable size but enhanced to the point of being in league with Excalibur or Mjolnir

Of course, what would it matter, enemies do not react to such things (I miss P&P RPGs for that particular aspect sometimes)

I think he means "games with combat that attempts to be as realistic as possible"

I could think of a couple of examples

I will use the term "Over-sized". Over-sized weapons and armor look incredibly stupid to me. I don't necessarily think they have to be "realistic" as most 2 handed swords weren't very big at all in real life. However, when someone is carrying around a mallet the size of a wheelbarrow, I usually pass on that game. It just look cartoonish.

I guess what I want is "fantasy realism". I don't need them to match our reality, but I don't want they so big and ridiculous that its unbelievable either.
