Is being able to carry loot a 'power fantasy'? Is it in the game because modern COD teenage boys need it to feel tough and cool? Is it because they're just too stupid too appreciate the 'realism' of lugging around 200 pounds of equipment like real, intelligent, hardcore RPG players?

Or is it maybe there just because it makes the experience more fun?

How about you stay on topic instead of doing whatever it is your doing

I believe every male character should show off their characterization at all times.

Have it hanging out for all to see.

Females doe, cover yourselves.

You make a good point, but characterization only applies to what gives David a stiffy. Unless he's bisexual, you won't see him arguing that male characters should run around in chainmail mankinis w/ huge bulges.

Oh, was that not pretty much what the OP said? Big weapons and fancy armor were 'power fantasies' for modern COD playing teenage boys who can't appreciate the intelligent 'realism' of weapons and armor?

Max Payne 3 had realism in terms of the amount of weapons that could be held, while keeping the experience fun.

I'd prefer some sort of balance between practicality and "rule of cool," the 2handed animations in DA:O were too slow and telegraphed, it seemed like those slowmotion pantomimes people do when they're trying to mimic a fight they saw on tv, big wind up, slow swing, slow recovery. DA2 was on the other end of the spectrum, swinging the weapon so fast it could be Styrofoam. I'd want more realism on the combat animations themselves with some allowances for "rule of Cool." Closer to the choreography of blade/Killbill/Lotr and less wirefu/Crouchign tiger shenanigans. Not pure realism, and not super fantastical.

Armor on the other hand I would prefer to be both practical AND cool looking, don't need a ton of spikes but perhaps beefier plates and bulkier/exaggerated armor to evoke the setting having enough magic or armor craftng skill to make armor bigger and more effective while still keeping it light enough to be combat effective. Not exaggerated to WoW levels, but enough to show that the setting allows for armor to be bigger/more elaborate, but not a great deal heavier to make the exaggerated look practical. Also: NO METAL BIKINIS or other such nonsense.armor should be armor, not underwear. It still has to be practical, if you must have spikes they need to be places so you aren't going to impale yourself on them, or hinder your movement, and armor should cover anything you don't want stabbed slashed or otherwise maimed.

They are fantasies, but not derived from that generalization - so I can't agree w/ the OP in that aspect, but a lot of RPG fans that I know of, prefer "realism".

Is staying on topic a 'power fantasy'? Is it a rule on the forums because modern ME3 teenage boys need it to feel tough and cool? Is it because they're just too stupid too appreciate the 'realism' of asking questions pertinent to the topic at hand?

I read this whole thread. I regret all of my life choices, thank you for asking. Now: We're talking about realism. In a fantasy game. A game that has dwarves, elves, magic, and strange creatures.

Realism.

In Dragon Age. I can't. I hope I never come back to this place.

Well - we can relate to swords/armor and such, no?  So I guess that's where it stems from.

A ton of other fantasy games have even more of the things that DA has. They still have realistic armor.

There's a threshold of realism, even in high-fantasy games, a degree of suspension of disbelief. Keeping weapons more practical earns brownie points in maintaining that immersion level.

Tbh, "realism" is a poor choice of words. "Believable" works better in what the thread is talking about
