Tell me. Are armor and weapons going to be over the top?

I actually rather liked the big swords in DA2, maybe because I'm shallow and I thought it looked aesthetically pleasing. That said, I also was okay with the swords in DA:O - I don't mind realism. I just prefer fantasy over it. Regarding combat, I also liked the combat in DA2 better, for the same reason.
I'm using the mod to remove armor/weapons restrictions and definitely my favourite armour combination is rogue champion armour + mage champion boots + mage champion gloves. And this all in a warrior lady Hawke. Ends up looking like this.

I hate over-sized weapons or weirdly shaped ones and will mod them out if possible.

I love "realistic" looking armors for male characters and NPC's.

But I also love fantastical, impractical and NSFW armors for females.

So sue me... "consistency is the hobgoblin of petty minds..."

it is not a problem as long as there is an alternative...

I share your viewpoints, but I found the Champion armor looked great for warriors and mages...especially on a male hawke.

It's red and black colored, spiked, having the thing above the chest that have no purpose for an armor, the helmet is a bird beak...but if you like it well it is personal taste, i don't like it...better Red Iron armor model than Champion armor model

Maybe its just me but it seemed like the swords in DAO were somewhat over sized as well.

I don't mind having over-sized weapons but I would prefer not "all" weapons be over-sized.

Isn't the main problem with the thing on the chest just thats its too low to serve its actual purpose?

Eh I'm more bothered by Hawke's veiny arm in the mage champion armor. Though the feeding trough is also pretty lulz worthy.

Eh, why one or the other? Do what Skyrim and many other games have done. Make every piece or armor or weapon upgradeable. Let people who want the big over-sized weapons be able to use them through the game. And let people like me who want more realistic and minimalist looking weapons use those through the entire game.

Make a wide variety of art styles and items, and make those items moddable so they can be upgraded for any level or any difficulty setting. It is asking a lot, but it is a great feature that I'd love to see in DAI.

Yep.  Generally I don't think the size changed at all.  DA2 probably had a few more truly ridiculous examples, though - like Hayder's razor.

I prefer realistic looking armor and weapons to the ridiculously oversized and impractical nonsense that is all too common in the fantasy RPG genre.

Like protecting your neck? Becasue that is a real armor style.

One thing I've always found strange about fantasy RPG armors is the obsession with ridiculously oversized pauldrons. What is that all about? While in general heavy plate tends to be way oversized and bulky in fantasy RPG games, it is often at its most exaggerated around the shoulders. Why do characters need something that looks 50 lbs of steel sitting on each shoulder, blocking their peripheral vision?

This is what plate armor around the shoulders should  look like:

DAO and DA2 are equally silly. DA2 might involve a lot of flipping, but DAO's animations for two-handers make you look like Babe Ruth stepping up to bat.

Babe Ruth actually had quite a small, compact swing.

For those that find 'realistic' combat animations to be boring, do you also find movies where actors are constrained to realistic moves in swordfighting scenes to be boring?

To be clear I'm using realistic not necessarily in the sense of actual techniques used in different fencing styles, but rather moves that the human body would actually be capable of regardless of whether it is something what would or wouldn't be used in a real sword fight. That is the case for most films, outside of perhaps Hong Kong actioners where the actors are rigged up to wires and pulleys.

Do you find this scene boring for example, or this or this?

Agreed. I prefer the simple, utilitarian look for armor. Some cloth additions, like the first and third pic also look good when worn over the armor.

I liked the armour in DAO (well, the Warrior armour; Mage armour was ugly, and Rogue armour never got beyond the Roman-style leathers). It was fairly realistic, nothing too crazy, but it looked good. One-handed weapons were of good size as well, though daggers were more like short swords. I don't hate that, as proper sized daggers would be a waste of art resources. Two-handed swords looked good, but the hafts on the two-handed battleaxes and warhammers were just way too long.

I was far more impressed with Bioware's ability to make sword-and-board animations look cool in DAO than with the more over-the-top animations of DA2. DA2 animations were okay, I just preferred the slower, more brutal style of DAO.

Actually, I find them all to be terrible except for the first one.

On topic, I've never had too many complaints about DA as far as their weapons and armor. Sure I find some pieces not to my taste, but I understand that while I might not like this particular sword or that piece of armor, someone else might because taste is an individual opinion. Speaking as an individual, I do tend to prefer fantasy armor/weapons over realistic versions... until we hit WoW standards. Because I find those "clothes" to be frightfully, eye-gouging-ly aweful. <_<

To me we're good until we end up like TERA not fond of my heroines all looking like they belong in a fantasy porno.
