I don't think you guys were even arguing the same thing even half of the time.

To my knowledge, it played out something like this-

David: Grafix are super-duper important!

Everybody else: Ehh, not really.

David: Yeah huh!

Me: What makes you say that?

David: Oh, you know, because I said so.

Well Frostbite 3 versus an engine that is who knows how old now isn't really a fair fight.

I hope Bioware focuses on graphics in the future enough that I never have to see this guy again.

So I ask again. How does it affect the game? Is there something that is taken away from the game as a direct result of this mode, or is it simply an objection based on principle?

Did you notice the lack of fialogue options?  The new focus on gameplay over story?

Um that happen in ME2.

So there was a lack of dialogue choices in ME2?

And ME2 had plenty of focus on story, just not the main story (not that the main plot for the trilogy was worth focusing on anyway).

Middle chapter of a trilogy not focusing on the main plot, and people wonder why ME series exploded into buttload of crap and just blame Mac.

The main plot sucked.

The best thing they ever did (imo) is ignore it and let players relish in the setting (and they did that in a neat way. The vehicle for seeing the setting were individual character stories).

All the main plot does is dismantle and destroy the setting. It's like watching someone build a beautiful sand castle, and then pissing on it.

5 years of development, 8 000 people involved and 268 millions (150 for development and 118 for marketing). Thats a huge difference compare to ME3.

Oh, and the fact that, unlike GTA V, ME3 wasn't the priority for the publisher at the time (SWTOR was).

GTA is a lot more mainstream than RPGs are is one reason.

A better looking game is a more enticing and immersive experience.

So David makes an actual point and everyone ignores and continues David bashing. I actually agree with this point. Graphics can definitely make for a more immersive experience. One obvious example is facial animation, which tends to be pretty important in games where a lot of the time spent with characters (for my money, the #1 reason to play a BW game) is shoulder-up semi-close ups of their neck and face. Of course I have to smirk a little at myself here since Tali is one of my favorite characters, but I think the masked angle only works so well because of how it contrasts with the other characters.

I disagree Crono. Art style is what makes for a more immersive experience, if said art style relates to having "graphic" quality, then sure. Most immersive games I've played in the past year haven't had graphic quality, nor was it what made the game stand out.

Do you? Let's see....

Graphics can definitely make for a more immersive experience.

Not according to this sentence.

That depends entirely on the style of the game. Artsy graphics in Mass Effect would look terrible. BioWare characters rely on that facial animation to make dialogues interesting (along with the voice acting and script). DA2's graphics were more stylized and this was by and large canned.

The most immersive games I've played have been a combination of art style and raw technical power. Example: The Last of Us. Discounting one or the other is equally useless, unless your game specifically caters to the indie/artsy crowd, in which case the latter is definitely less important.
