From all the literature, film, cartoons, games i've viewed, inspiration isn't an issue.

It's blatant plagiarism like with Nick Simmons ripping Tite Kubo's Bleach that anyone should worry about, but judging by your posts you're above that.

Yeah, I'm not trying to plagiarize, but when I look at some of the things I've taken inspiration from as a foundation, I worry that (as I said) people may think I'm just plagiarizing or just making an Ersatz version that's only different enough to not get me sued.

I suppose, in the end, if this gets published I can find out for certain. And if I am indeed plagiarizing despite my efforts not to, I can make steps to amend the situation.

It'll really be bad though if a work I've never even heard of, let alone read or played or watched, happened to do my idea(s) first.

There are bound to be similarities regardless so you shouldn't worry too much about it.

Just don't do this...

On a related note - Since your using dwarves why not have them be mountain dwelling, wine drinking scholars who pay the other races to work the mines on their property, and are called dwarves because they stand taller (no sexual) than the other races? (beards and axes stay)

You're not too far off from how I'm writing the Dwarves, actually. It's not going to be like that exactly, but you're not far off the mark.

Nice. B)

Cool. Knowing you they have Silverback Gorilla mounts too?

Nah, they don't. Least, not now. Maybe later...

But if I could get it to be a multimedia thing like I want to (the book would just be the intro to the world, though maybe not the only one) I'd definitely work on implementing gorilla mounts. And battlebears.

I actually like the drow elves a lot. But in Dragon Age? No. Does not feel like they belong there. It's a D&D-thing.

I'd imagine salmon or honey as being their only weaknesses during combat.

If want to talk about similarities, these are from Warcraft 3, all medieval fantasy themed have them...

Revenant - stereotypically a powerful undead carrying large shield and large sword
Posted Image

Skeleton - stereotypically weak enemy
Posted Image

Elf - stereotypically archers
Posted Image

Mages - stereotypically carrying staff

None of that is a Warcraft 3 original. Revenants are historically some form of undead returned to haunt the living. As are skeletons. Magical staves is also a very old thing, definitely not anything newly thought of. Elves are mythological creatures. They're all very general fantastical elements rooted in historical tales or mythologies.

The Drow, on the other hand, is a fairly original creation for the D&D settings, as far as I know. Not just "Evil elves", but the drow as the underground-dwelling civilisation of evil- dark-skinned elves with the society we see in D&D.

Yes, but we can see them in most medieval fantasy themed games, Revenant, Elves archer and Mages carrying staff we can see them in DA:O. There is nothing original anymore, and no one can claim originality.

Drow Ranger exist in DotA, in Warcraft 3, it's called "Dark Ranger"
Posted Image

The Templar anti-Mage ability is also not original, Warcraft 3 and DotA have that, Magina the Anti-Mage that can burn mana through weapon strike

Silence, healing, fireballs, lightning strike, chain lightning and many more are all not original anymore and no one can claim originality

None of that is original, no. They are common themes in fantasy settings.

Dark Elves, elves who are considered "evil" or something along those lines, is also a common theme. Drow as they appear in Forgotten Realms is not.

Ok then.
I am sure Bioware could come up with drow/dark elves that wouldn't violate any dnd copyrights and would be different from those in other books and video games.
I do think players are too caught up in certain definitions .
Maybe it's my fault for calling them dark elves.
Maybe they're not dark as in dark skinned.
Maybe they're not evil.
Maybe they're survivors of Arlathan, who live in some hidden elven thaig.
Who are lost elves. Who somehow, possibly through magic, have protected themselves from the darkspawn.
Elves still nearly immortal, with magic unknown for centuries.
Could be.
Or not be.

Yes, Bioware can include Dark Elves, but just give another names, changed them a little bit and add in the lore...

Maybe "Dark Elves" was Arcane Warriors got tainted or something

Looks like Artemeus came up with the idea before I did.
Something along those lines.

'Dark' has negative connotations independent of skin color. Humans are diurnal creatures, we can see during the day. At night, we can't see very well. Various monsters(such as panthers) that used to prey on our ancestors are nocturnal, and can see very well indeed.

The 'Dark' in Dark Elf more likely refers to their nature, rather than their appearance. Dark hearts and minds, evil, treacherous and sadistic. Saying someone has a 'black heart' doesn't have anything to do with race either. A person's heart will always be red, whether their skin be pink or brown. If you have a black heart, you need to go see a doctor.

Besides, dark elves often have gray or blue skin, thoroughly unnatural and not comparable to any actual human being. If you see a person with gray skin, they are either extremely sick or a corpse. You need to get the hell away from them. Which is precisely the reaction Dark Elves are meant to invoke.

Better question; why don't we have mindflayers? Mindflayers would be much better.

Or, or, I know this sounds crazy, but what if Thedas was populated by original species that the writers made up themselves.

Like what?Everything's been done.

What about the Durandatar, a race with three legs and only one arm on its back. They have eyes in their palm and giant shark-like mouths in their otherwise completely bald head.

They are known to be extremely stealthy and aggressive during combat, but are sentient. Their society consists of a elderly council and a group of advisors made out of those with the biggest teeth!

Darkspawn have red blood isn't it?

But usually the "Dark" Elf is dark skinned, usually blue grey, blue-ish black and have red eyes...Warcraft 3 Dark Ranger and TES Dark Elf are like this.

Dark Ranger in Warcraft 3 in which lead to Drow Ranger are basically undead Elf, they are already dead but resurrected by prince Arthas, as Banshee then somehow becoming Drow Rangers. They are excellent in using dark magic and they are evil.

In DotA, Traxex was a Drow Ranger but she is a good "person", she hate her own people who abuse dark magic, so she side with the Sentinel against the undead. She can silence spell casters, firing cold arrows and having true shot aura

Anyone can find anyhting sexy. I presume however, that most human beings do not have a fetish for shark-mouthed, three-legged, one-armed, palm-eyed creatures, and would not enjoy watching such a creature mating.......

It's all or nothing then, is it? If Dragon Age adheres to some tropes, it needs to adhere to them all.

"Dark" doesn't necessarily refer to skin tone, more attitude.

Or they've killed so many that they're stained dark, such as in my example. ;P

That is EXACTLY the sort of thing that plays into racist tropes, however.  It's what Faerunner was getting at, and the point is a valid one.  An entire race of elves who are evil as a matter of course, and they're universally dark-skinned?  YES, this IS a racist trope.  Quite beyond the fact it's already been done in quite a few other fantasy settings and has no need to be repeated here, it is quite tiresome to see dark skin once again equated with evil.

  • Who said the entire race would be evil?
  • Who said they would all be dark skinned?
  • Most things have already been done in fantasy settings.
Since you appear to be ignorant about my example to begin with, the Dark Elves in LoM are normal elves who fell disillusioned from the faith of Life and joined the order of Death.  Not even all of these are evil, as a few of them join the faith of Earth (which is more or less neutral aligned).

Im a fan of the manga Berserk. Few things can shock me. If you put dark elves into it make them like Vikings
