The same way that you can fall in love with something that doesn't exist. If you would rather form emotional bonds with fictional characters than actual people, there is a problem. It's that simple.

People form emotional bonds with lots of things. We form bonds with animals, cars, boats, houses, strangers we've never met. It's the core of anthropomorphism and why cartoons have talking animals and objects.

It's a fairly normal behavior.

I know people who "love" Star Wars. Just like the entire thing. Not even specific characters. It doesn't prevent them from being attached to other stuff.

Animals, exist. I'm not saying don't like characters. But if you can actually fall in love with one, which does happen, I really don't know what to say besides some very sincere words that boil down to "That's weird." I for instance, have never be in love with an animal, though some people are. It's still wrong, and it's still unhealthy.

There are different types of love... They aren't all sexual.
Also, being invested in a character isn't a disorder. And I'm speaking as someone who has a degree in psychology. xD
Now there are unhealthy obsessions, but coming to care for a character of fiction (generally speaking) is not, in and of itself, a disorder.

Wondering what their penis would feel like is though. ((Which I personally saw posted snd discussed seriously in one of the now locked qunari romance threads.))

:: YOU LOVE ME :: The one the humans would call Harbinger rumbled menacingly.

Nazara, poised at the edge of the Mass Effect relay, paused in its calibrations. :: YES ::

:: YOU WILL RETURN :: Harbinger said. :: UNHARMED :::

Nazara did not respond.

:: YOU WILL :: Harbinger insisted.

:: YOU KNOW THE STATISTICAL RISKS ::

:: YOU... ::

:: ENOUGH! :: Nazara turned from its peer and returned furiously to its advanced calculations. Harbinger's engined rumbled and it approached Nazara's side.

:: IF YOU FAIL :: Harbinger said :: I WILL ASSUME DIRECT CONTROL ::

:: I WILL NOT FAIL. OUR PEOPLE DEPEND ON MY EFFORTS ::

Harbinger reached one armored claw out and stroked Nazara's metallic carapace. :: OF COURSE ::

The Reaper appeared to relent at the contact and floated closer to caress the steel skin of Harbinger. Harbinger hummed with a mix of menace and apparent delight. Encouraged, Harbinger entwined its mechanical tentacles with Nazara. The frames of the Reapers' bodies vibrated in unison.

:: WE HAVE NO BEGINNING... :: whispered Nazara.

:: ... WE HAVE NO END :: finished Harbinger as it brought its armored tentacles together with Nazara. :: OUR NUMBERS WILL DARKEN THE SKY OF EVERY WORLD :: It slide its metal arm into Nazara's docking bay. Nazara shivered and held Harbinger tighter in its black claws. Pulling close so that their internal access ports where only mere meters away, Harbinger maneuvered to lock all eight docking ports fully with Nazara. It then began extending its long, hard-alloyed metal boarding ramps. Nazara's engines purred in response, and lights illuminated its open bays. Harbinger's shell trembled slightly as the airlocks connected.

:: BEGINNING FLUID TRANSFER::

Harbinger's entry corridor lights flashed red and orange as its internal systems began pumping reserves of organic material into Nazara's hold. The Reaper's entwined tentacles lingering over each other, moving with the art and precision of a hundred thousand years of evolutionary perfection.

At this moment, thank heavens, Commander Crack Shepard, galactic savior, arrived to save the day.

"Abominations!" Screamed Shepard from where the Commander sat atop a long, large nuclear device.

"NUKES EVERYWHERE!" Crack Shepard screamed defiance as the Alliance hero rode heroically (and very stupidly) into the Reaper inferno.

Harbinger exploded.

End.

Why, inherently, is it problematic?

It's problematic because if people wanted to go into detail about penis and vagina they wouldn't be visiting BSN, but a forum to discuss sex (they do exist, I'm sure).

Also, I find many romancers to be shallow and petty. I've never seen one of them, even a single post, that was ever about what type of person they'd want to romance in the game. Nothing about their personality, their beliefs, their history, their anything thst makes them who they are. Instead its all about the race. "I want an elf. I want a dwarf. I wsnt a dalish. I want a kossith." Over and over and absolutely no thought into who these characters they want would be.

They don't seem to care about anything but the race. And it's so very disappointing.

Right on the money. My first romance experience was with KotOR. At the time, I really enjoyed it. But now? I think it's spiraled out of control. I wouldn't mind a game without romances, provided that the material/cost was used towards some other, potentially interesting, aspect of RPing.

That's still not a disorder. Being curious is normal, even if it is in a hypothetical situation. Just because something isn't your kink doesn't make someone messed up.

That isn't to say that I don't find it somewhat offputting to think of these things, for I've no interest in wondering what Qunari junk is like. xD That said, I'm sure there are plenty of people who find pony-play or furries "weird" or think its a disorder. Different strokes for different folks.

Why? Because other than the ME3 ending, the romances have caused Bioware the most trouble and negative press, that's why.

I hear there's still romances in DAI.

We're talking about why they'd be annoyed by romances being in the game, not if they are including them or not.

The simple answer is because Romance is the one part of the game that can take over the forum and it polarises the fan base like few other, Mage/Templar being the other main one.

They show  well polished all singing and dancing in game footage and some people go.

"Oh so I can play a Dwarf cool."
"Varric is back Great."
" Can my dwarf romance Varric?"
"I want varric as the main LI for my dwarf!"
"I want varric as the main LI for my dwarf!"
"I want varric as the main LI for my dwarf!"
"I want varric as the main LI for my dwarf!"
"I want varric as the main LI for my dwarf!"

When you make a presentation as good as the PAX one was even a very small minority getting side tracked by a particular romance arc that must be annoying.

Now do I like the romance aspects of the game? Yes. It adds something to the game that most other don't have. I just don't let it define my game expectations.

Yeah, this isn't true at all. There were a lot of them. And also I love the character threads precisely because people put a lot of love in writting why they loved a character with very long posts and well written.

Actually, it's one of the strenght of this forum when it doesn't get too obsessive.

What does I need to prove, exactly ? Just read Fenris thread, Miranda thread, Ashley thread, Isabela thread, Aveline thread, Cullen thread and you'll see by yourself how people talk about every single thing concerning their beloved character. Make some research if you really need to see it.

This is your job, not mine.

As for what people would like to romance, there will be always people saying just things like, I want a dwarf or a Qunari or Teagan. Nothing wrong with that. They are not forced to elaborate, especially if they don't really care about figuring out the next romance like me. And there will be always people more developping about what they'd like.
