The same way that you can fall in love with something that doesn't exist. If you would rather form emotional bonds with fictional characters than actual people, there is a problem. It's that simple.
It's a fairly normal behavior.
I know people who "love" Star Wars. Just like the entire thing. Not even specific characters. It doesn't prevent them from being attached to other stuff.
