If so few people actually explore the optional romance content, then why does BioWare keep including that content?

They wouldn't lose that many consumers.

Unless we assume that higher-ups are mandating this optional content.

I personally wish romancers actually cared more about the romance quality, and less about what species their romanced partner will be.

The ability to write characters and stories that people can connect with and love is what made BioWare successful. Not having the option for romance in their games.

BioWare is hardly "unique," however.

Hardly.

Bioware became what it was because, for a long time, they made good RPGs with very good mainstream appeal. Not because of the romances. Because few people actually do the romances.

Chaos Hammer didn't say that romances made bioware what it is solely, try to read next time.

There is no denying the attention the romances get, even if you dislike them.

The same reason they included races again even though only a minority played elves and dwarves

And you know this how?

I'm sure a good number of players have tried at least one romance path.  If only for curiosity's sake.

Because Bioware employees have said so.

Because they actually care about their minorities, which is rather nice.

I doubt David hates romances. Perhaps he just hates all the forum drama that accompanies the romances. I know I find it annoying sometimes.

not another.
I can already see name calling from the haters, those who hate romances.
A mod needs to lock this thread.

What was the point to this post?

Anyway, believe it or not, most fans do not acutally play the romances. I agree with Darth, BioWare being "great" had nothing to do with the seven minutes worth of dialogue that is the romances.

BioWare came right out and said it.

If Bioware hated romances, they would stop including the content. If the romance fans have driven them to knash their teeth and pull their hair out, then the next installment of Dragon Age won't include them.
This is doubtful, however.

I really think they resent the fact that so many people play DA games due to the romance options. They have created this rich, wonderful tapestry of a world which they are very proud of and really want people to love the game for this aspect. But they continue to under estimate the importance of it (romance) in the games, that being said, they do understand it enough to NOT delete them altogether because that would affect sales...which again...makes them feel slightly resentful. IMHO

Did they give percentages?  Numbers would be nice.

Here is a post where Chris Priestly said it was a "relatively small" percentage who played the romances. I miss his posts, it was nice to see someone telling the rabid romancers to give it a rest and his destruction of the ME3 romance forum was glorious.

So many? Again, only a small fraction of the fanbase even does the romances. Who is this "so many?"

Hmmm...

He made a point not to share the numbers.

I will choose to remain sceptical, then.  I find it hard to believe that a vast majority of players wouldn't even be curious to try at least one romance one time.

I'm not.

Most casual gamers are just going to run through the main quest and never do any optional content.

I find it hard to believe that most players never did any other Origin other than human for DA:O, when there were more and better options for the other races.

Yet people constantly surprise.

As a casual player, I must say that I do all of the optional content that I can, simply because I love the DA universe and enjoy seeing all aspects of it. Of course I realize you were generalizing on purpose (and quite possibly correctly), so please don't think I'm making this post simply to refute your statement. As far as romances, I do enjoy them for what they add to my roleplaying experience. I prefer Origins romances to DA2 romances purely because I feel they had so much more depth to them and they were of a higher quality.

Having said that, I could certainly play the game without having romances as I would still love and enjoy the DA world, but at the same time, my roleplay experience would be diminished for the lost content, particularly where my companions are concerned.

As for Mr. Gaider's comments, I have to agree that he probably doesn't hate the romances themselves, but I'm sure he gets pretty pissed off over all of the crap the romances set off amongst the fans. Then again, I'm not some personal friend or confidant, so my supposition could be wildly inaccurate. Still, could I see Bioware diminishing the importance/breadth of their romances? Definitely. Could I see them removing them from their future games entirely? Not really.
