No David's right on this one, having the protagonist be the ubergod who can do anything and have characters break their own character for them and their magic fixing junk is a bad idea.

To be fair, the author of that example did admit that the example was a poor one (probably due to it being hastily written, I assume).

I don't think that there's anything fundamentally wrong with romances affecting things.  I'm actually a fan of mutual exclusion, though perhaps there are better ways to do so.

@Allan.

Any option at this early stage of game dev of having a romance subforum?
Seems like its' one of the greatest triggers for "fighting".
If yes, then a poll to gauge interest and reflect why it's being done.
It really does seem to hurt some people's "eyes & minds" to see another romance thread.
I don't mind hoping over to a subforum for romances.
Just a thought.

I'm not Allan, but creating a romance forum wouldn't stop anti-romance brigade from going there and starting a fight. Oh and they will demand it's closure too.

That's not how it works. Unless you think firefighters have sex with the people they save beforehand

Anti-romance brigade? Is this a thing now?

The romance and character forum self-destructed of it's own regard in case you had forgotten.

I don't agree that a pc's life should rely on whether they're romanced or not.

Sounds weird to me.

I don't really think anyone thought that. That was just a proposal for a possible outcome. Anyway, wasn't Cortez like this?

Nah, you just had to talk with him a lot and be his friend. Then he didn't die. Somehow.

ANYWHO

The whole reason I got into Bioware games was because I heard about Liara as a FemShep romance from ME1. My eyeballs about popped out of my head when I found that out, and immediately had to own the game. Dragon Age Orgins followed quickly. So I've always been fond of Bioware's romances, if only because they're what drew my attention first.

_____________

Acording to some - you are an anomally - a minority.
As I wrote earlier, I would be VERY CURIOUS to hear how Bioware came up with their romance participation stats.  They sure didn't know about my interest - being 100% offline (no DLC) until recently.
The kind of people who enjoy romances, are they likely to DLC, maintain game profiles, etc?
I have some major reservations as to how stats were arrived at.

Do you have any proof that wasn't the work of anti-romance brigands in disguise?

It could have been an elaborate false flag operation to discredit romance fans on the forums.

____________

No.  It would not stop them.
But it would make life better for others perhaps.
Even if we cut the amount of romance thread compaliners down by half - that's a victory.
As for "them" - it would narrow down their real agendas - assuming they have them;)

How did you get to firefighters having sex with people they save beforehand?
Weren't we talking about romances change the way things can play out.
In other words you have to engage the "romance option" first?

I was referring to the poster who gave an example of Jack living or dying based on romance.

As well as the poop that was the suicide mission in ME2.

That some of the most powerful people in the world live or die based on whether miss godshep did them a favor or sided with them over another NPC is gross like poop:sick:

Romance and character forum "self-destructed" because bioware mods with Chris "deal with it" Priestly didn't delete bad posts and didn't ban worst offenders. You know, which was actually their job. Closing the forum was lazy decision.

Also why people always bring Mass Effect Romance and character forum as a stick to beat all Bioware romances? Mind boggling. Dragon Age fanbase generally  is much better.

The romance forums were okay when they, you know, actually discussed the characters and romances. It's a shame that most of it was just megathreads of people worshipping the characters by spamming fanart/fanfiction/etc, with anyone who dared say something controversial about the character being ganged up on (Miranda Civil War). It didn't leave much room for actual discussion. If we ever get another character/romance forum I hope that megathreads like that are banned and stay in the group discussions where they blong.

Well i'd think the protagonist cna have an effect on those who follow him. Not anything radically changing, no turning Isabela into a good Chantry-going girl (outside of RP)

I think this is an interesting point. I'm not a fan of the player having huge impacts on how the other characters behave, because I think it takes away from the NPCs. I like that we have interesting characters, and I'd probably rate characters as the thing I love most about BioWare games, and why I gravitated towards the studio (on top of living in Edmonton already >.>).

Having said that, well written points of challenge are VERY interesting to me, whether they happen to other characters or to mine (probably why I like Isabella so much). If it leads to interesting choices and decisions and I like being challenged, and seeing how others are challenged. I feel I can get a real sense of their character.

We're talking about some of the most powerful, intelligent, and mentally strong people in the entire galaxy.

Saying you've been a long "student" of history does nothing to dismiss the idiocy of a person like that living or dying based on a favor.

As much I can remember any fantasy book I have ever read had romance in them. Why? Because it adds depth in them. Constant hack'n slash tends to get boring in the long run.

Yes, but we're confronted with those situations every day.

Considering that all 8-10 crew members have been close to death countless times and survived it shows they're more than capable of avoiding idiocy at the worst moments possible.

And I'm to believe that all crew members lives can die based on a favor or 3 sentences?

Pretty much this. The romance subforum, when not getting into pissing matches over whose waifu/husbando was better, it was just a while lotta nothing; just people shooting the ****.
