Serious debate: DA's loot/itemization system, will we get a dev question thread for this too?

I'd just like to say, I love DA and I love Bioware. I've gamed since I was a little kid with Bioware and now I'm in college still enjoying their games.  Keep up the great work Bioware!

Ok, now back on topic

First off, I'd like to talk about Bioware's itemization/loot system. By no means do I expect this to be a Diablo loot game. In my opinon, Diablo puts too much loot out and it makes it feel like too much "trash" loot. This is a problem in DA. While its true Bioware has always had similar systems in the past...I've always felt this was a weak part in their games. It particularly shows in DA.

Since this game isn't like Diablo, why do I find myself selling 95% of the loot I collect to vendors? Its often generic loot too. DA has plenty of loot that is unique but I feel it needs more. It also feels like their itemization is very unbalanced. Seems like the games has way more Heavy/Massive unique armor items than the other armor classifications...

I totally agree on the way they did the economy of the game making unique items cost a TON of money. You should pay to boost your character so much. I just get the feeling as I'm running around that Rogues feel underpowered...mainly lockpick/stealing specced Rogues. I feel no incentive most of the time collecting stuff in locked chests. Their is very few worth opening with really good items. When I do get a item, it always seems like its a Heavy/Massive piece of armor I can't use and only really have one character(based on specs) that can wear it effectively.

Stealing is probably worse. Something that needs a serious overhaul in just about every way, IMO. 99% of the time its money and most of the time I'm trying to steal from someone REALLY hard to do so...only to find out I wasted 10 minutes doing so for absolutely NOTHING.

Something I also felt disheartening is a lot of the unique items in the game...have shared graphics. Bergen's Honor is a prime example, it has the Templar helmet graphic. That is a little lame in my opinion.

I would like to see their itemization overhauled in the next DA game. Its apart of the gameplay for people like me. I know their is mods that fix a lot of my arguments but we have to wait on them. Also, it sucks for the console audience who have no option of mods.

I'd like to be more rewarded for my exploration...not get 10 generic daggers in my inventory to sell to a vendor. Having a good itemization/loot system adds a lot to a hardcore RPG like this in my opinion, IMO.  The game just feels constricted for such small loot tables compared to some other hardcore loot games like Diablo...yet has just as much generic trash loot.

Thoughts? :police:

I disagree with about 90% of this, especially  your complaints that stealing is somehow difficult or that rogues are underpowered.

On high level NPCs, its hard to steal from them. And its often wasting your time to do so since the incentive is 40s stolen, if that. Most of the time...you get absolutely nothing.

I stole a pair of unique Daggers off one NPC and that is literally the first time I've seen a useful steal. Ironically, they weren't even useful for my Rogues(they had better weapons). This is coming from someone who steals from EVERY NPC available.

What I meant by underpowered Rogues was the steal/lockpick spec, not the Rogues in general as far as damage.

I'd also like to point out, DA has a very cryptic stat system. A lot of their items have stats on them that only a real true hardcore player of Bioware games would know. Even for people like me, some of them are confusing. You have stuff like Rapid Aim or Radiating Cold. I know from personal experience they have a lot of hidden "checks" and "stats" on their items. For instance, if you wear heavy armor, enemies target you more. I don't think their is anything in the game that tells you that. Its rather hidden. That is just a example.

The armour thing comes up as a tip like every 3rd loading screen.

There are lots of useful items that you can steal, and you can accumulate a good amount of cash over time by selling the 'trash' you loot. Enough to buy yourself some of the better items in the game.

I really don't see how yu find stealing difficult. The -only- thing that can be tricky is in-combat theft, specially on enemies such as the brood mother that don't really have an accessible back. If you fail at staling a lot, you probably need more cunning. 30 cunning and rank 4 deft hands should let you steal off of any NPC in the game.

I would agree with some of that, Mages I think get a wee bit shafted when it comes to choices of Robes and Staffs, yes a few exist but not the great variety of swords for warriors, or Massive Armours. and I don't like the Feathery robes on my player although they can be good stats wise cos I am a Vain person :P and yes A few more random unique weapon/ armour finds would be nice. But you need to strike a fine balance between not enough and too much

I would agree with some of that, I do think special armour is tended more to the side of Heavy and Massive, also not a lot of options with Staffs for Mages or robes for that matter, a few good ones i usually throw aside because I don't think the Male mages look all that great in Feather robes (A Vain person I am I know) though for Rogues I think they have their fair share of good weapons after all not many Massive Armour warriors are fighting with Daggers these days. but yes a few more Random and unique items would be a bit more exciting than an Iron Dagger

I think their itemization is very unbalanced in that area. Not just favoring one area of their loot system but also adding useless stuff that most people will probably never use. For instance...I'm getting items for Mages with a lot of dodge on it. Seriously? It wouldn't be so bad if they had more stats like Spellpower...Dodge would be extra incentive, so who could argue with that?

I know people have different playstyles but I seriously doubt players want high dodge for their Mages over Spellpower. I'm pretty sure most players have someone in the party with Taunts to at least keep the enemies off their Damage Dealers...

A solo mage would probably be better served with some dodge points rather than 2 or 3 more spellpower.

depends on the style of play on said Mage, some mages can go an entire battle solo, without letting an enemy near them, and for those mages Spellpower would be more useful.. but as i said all depends on Style of Play
