I hope this is the correct section to post this.
I heard from a friend that people are allowed to extract game assets (models, textures, sounds, music, animations, etc.) from the Mass Effect trilogy and use them in non-commercial, non-profit media such as mods for other games, machinima, renders, etc. Is this true?

I'm no expert, but if you want to use them just for yourself you should be fine.
In case you want to make them available for public (say as mods for a game or something similar)
you should ask for permission first.
Even if just out of courtesy; AFAIK Bioware has no problems with this.
I guess the correct place to ask would be there: contact@bioware.com

Because we know how speedy BioWare is on responding via email.
I'm still waiting for them to reply about my ME3 game breaking bug. EA only sent the email to them... 7 months ago.
If anyone else has experience or insight as to BioWare's policy towards the use of sound assets (almost entirely weapon discharge effects) in other non-commercial non-profit projects like mods for other games, I'd loved to know.
