I suspect the protheans in fact have survived, either an undetected colony like ilos, or more likely the handfull of top scientists that reprogrammed the keepers. either by prolonging their natural life through as of yet unknown means, or cloning, transferring their minds into machines/collectors (you heard me) or whatever.
because, lets face it: cheap plot turns like that is what science fiction is all about.
I don't think the collectors are in tie with the reapers at all, I think we'll hear from the protheans at the end of me2
I like your idea. And there are a few hints that could be the case.

there could always be a reaper scout flyby or something, and how do you make sure that nobody ever tries to contact family members on other colonies or stupid things like that.Harrod200 wrote...
Indoctrination requires exposure to a Reaper though (or whatever Saren did to the Salarians), so if they didn't leave the planet they'd be safe enough...
like I said earlier, it was a renegade move, but a necessary one.

I suppose if Ilos survived by going dark and having its existence totally deleted from all records, another colony could do the same.
Maybe that one survived with a viable population.

They must have. The one in the Citadel was a reciever only, it had no other function. If it hadn't been there, then a) what did the Ilos relay connect to? AndTheRastapopolous wrote...

Wasn't the mini-mass relay installed after they departed and after the Keepers had been altered?
uh, now that you ask?
I always assumed they installed it beforehand and used it to get to the citadel to reprogram the keepers.
Here's a question though - how did anyone else know about it? Even Liara had heard of it, she knew of it as being "key to the Prothean extinction". But it wasn't. The Prothean extinction (except for the 12 scientists) had already finished before the Conduit was ever used. It was a classified project, the records of which were destroyed in the initial Reaper attack on the Citadel. That, and the Reapers carefully prepped the galaxy before they left - enough to leave evidence of the Protheans and "Prothean" technology like the relays and the FTL for the next generation to find, but nothing to indicate what happened to them. So surely any evidence of the Conduit that Liara found, the Reapers would have found before they left? Why didn't they investigate it?
And how did Saren know about it? Why was it key to the return of the Reapers? He could have waltzed into the Council Chambers and enacted the final scene of the game at any point. Why bother with Eden Prime in the first place? The Conduit was only necessary for him to sneak back onto the station, but he only needed to do that after he got caught perpetrating the attack on Eden Prime.

For humans, the minimum viable population is around 500 split into several colonies, was it ever stated how many people went INTO stasis?
OK, this link says around 160...

I never figured it would be possible with so few.
Suppose it helps if the volunteers are carefully screen before hand.
